Why the Murray hate?

aloniv

I'm trying to understand why Murray is hated by fans and his peers. Here are the reasons I can think of:

1. He's a tall player who shouldn't be playing "pusher" tennis.
2. He's overhyped before grand slams since he is hailed as the favorite by the media.
3. He's perceived as a choker. He loses in important grand slam matches and only wins masters events that the big player don't care about.
4. The "come on" chants after his opponents commit unforced errors.

Feel free to add more reasons. These reasons still don't explain the lack of respect he gets by Federer in interviews (Federer advised him to play more aggressive etc) although in Federer's case it's probably part of his 'mind games' (and his advise was actually rather good). Nadal had kind word's to say about Murray before their Australian Open match this year, but then again he always says nice things about his opponents (when was the last time he dissed his opponent?).

I personally love Murray, but I've heard people say they don't like Murray because the British press drools over him and exalts him. Plus he seems very sullen to them.

Personally the UK press are annoying about him. I don't really like it when he does that 'roar' thing either. Sort of growing to like him though.

They're completely in awe of his sheer sexual magnetism and this turns to bitterness and resentment.

He turns straight men gay and straight women moist. Only the lesbians are immune and even some of them waver.

In all seriousness, all players have their haters, it's a sign you've arrived.

In Murray's case perhaps he has more than most because

1) he doesn't play power tennis and shows no desire to seriously become a power player - he wants to play with more guile and variety and play more counterpunching style, which puts off the sort of fan who thinks good tennis is about hitting hard or if not, hitting harder. And there's a lot of those these days, they think hitting a forehand slice is a sign of gayness.

2) He has little charisma on the court, little charisma in interviews, and has no interest in developing any - he's not a media whore. He wants the support of the public but not at the price of becoming something he's not - his take it or leave it attitude is bound to leave some people cold.

3) While I and others think he has a certain unusual charm in the looks department, he's by no means a classic himbo so he's not going to capture the moist panties brigade.

4) In the case of the Brits, too, it's not unusual for us to want to tear down those who've made it near the top of their sporting profession - I think some would like nothing better to see a Murray scandal all over the sports pages.

Any or all of the above, take your pick.

I don't hate Andy Murray but I find him very dislikeable. Sour, sullen and sulking on court..extremely negative. He is a steady solid player and could have a dynamic game but with his negativity pushes and pushes. Then there is the vomit enducing British tennis coverage where he regarded as some sort of deity, this isn't his fault of course even though I do think he can courts it at times.

I don't hate Murray, but I'm not fond of him, the way he comes off personality wise turns me off, I don't like the way he pushes the ball, I don't like his on-court antics, he just lacks a spark for me and his many of his fans are delusional. He's overrated horribly, probably the most overrated player as of right now on the ATP tour. He isn't a GS threat at all anywhere outside of the US Open (and even there he isn't at the top of the list) until proven otherwise.

Seriously? I'm not Scotish or anything so I'm not biased - just want to point that out, but I really like the guy's tenacity style of play & his overall uniqueness that he brings to the game. He has had three slam finals, and instead of respecting that for the age he is you people seem to bash him for it repeatedly (as far as I've come across). Personally, I'm a big Murray fan. Why? Because to me there is no one else like him on tour.

chill man. I like Murray, he is a great guy... very good player. However, you are always over the top with your comments ;. You hate Novak with passion. If I don't like a particular player I usually ignore him and don't make any comments. My favorite players are :1. Nole 2. Gasquet 3. Murray 4. Gonzo etc. I hope this help. You should give credit where credit is due, but you don't. My impression is that you are jealous of Djokovic because he is doing so much better than Muza, and that is sad ...buy hey, go on, whatever makes you happy. Never realising potential is a classic British trait, having some raw talent and being unable to execute it sucessfully on the world stage. Murray is a classic example of this, the only true coverage Tennis gets in British media is during Wimbledon and to a lesser extent other grand slams (mostly thanks to the BBC brilliantly airing them with no rival coverage) which Andy hasn't so far shown what he's capable of. He's got a very surly demeanour; while i respect that he wont change for the press, basic PR is an element of becoming a popular, loved player - which is of course incredibly helpful for sucess. He can be childish and poorly held in moments of frustration/defeat, plus overt explosions of testosterone isn't particularly held in high regard in British press, and by the looks of this site around the world (Hewitt and to a lesser extent, Rafa).

He's his own person, and respect to that. But essentially, so far he's not done anything which has truly earnt the adoration of fans which aren't so sure of him and press which wants a big/world beating winner.

I don't hate Murray, I almost feel bad for him because of all the GS pressure bullshit he's had to deal with.
But what I dislike about him is his attitude. I just wish he looked like he was having fun out there once in a while. When he makes errors, he's way too angry at himself. When he makes a great shot, it's almost like "well, this is what I should always be doing. I hate myself for not doing it all the time".
It makes you feel weird watching him, because he looks like he's not enjoying himself at all....I don't doubt he loves tennis, but that kind of attitude can't be helping him.
And I wish he would play more aggressive. But whatever, the attitude is the main thing.

I still don't get the British hype stuff.. He barely appears in the newspapers unless he gets to a GS semi, otherwise it's football football football, and obviously doesn't appear on the news.. other than that British commentators might hype him up I guess.. and all they say is- "is this his year!?" etc.. but that's really to be expected right?

To be fair on the British media, they don't hype him up anymore than other countries do for their own players. Well, from where I sit anyway.

Exactly, he needs to say to himself I may not be as naturally gifted as a Federer or a Nadal, but i can play my tennis and still beat them. Rediscover the flow of his talent and not try and reach the impossible: so called "perfect tennis". Just play for himself, not beat himself up everytime he falls short. This is where i see the Lendl comparison as quite fitting, he's talented for sure.. but he isn't the most gifted the world has seen, just graft and play his way to eventually become a world beater.

They're completely in awe of his sheer sexual magnetism and this turns to bitterness and resentment.

He turns straight men gay and straight women moist. Only the lesbians are immune and even some of them waver.

Sucks Scoobs, you found us out! Of late I can't seem to avoid dreaming of Andy the moment I go to bed... Murray...murrrie... morritos-murray... it goes on and on until I'm about to see his face while he leaves the court after Wimby 10 SF... but then his mother gets in the way, I struggle frantically with her to get a glimpse of Andy... to no avail!... the alarm rings and I have to go to work, where I mostly just pass the time hoping that the next night I'll get to see the same scene right to the end...

OT, I've always rather liked Murray (despite some of his fans ). I like him especially because of the way some people make fun of him. Love to see him win Wimby and step up to take the cup wearing a kilt and waving the saltire, but alas, Rafa won't let him .

I don't like his game nor his attitude, both on and off the court. Not much to it.

This. An odd thread, really.

I don't mind his game as much, but his on-court attitude is disgraceful. I cannot think of another player on the tour that displays a more childish and bratty demeanor when things do not go his way. It's unpleasant to watch, to say the least.
