Hard and clay suck so we're hoping for a bigger and better things here on the green stuff ;)

This week Paulo is back on court in Liverpool for an exhibition tournament. I believe he chose to play here because he wanted to watch World Cup... Wouldn't be professional to play an ATP level tourney with his mind elsewhere  [OK. He is just in desperate in of match-play :p]

:bounce: Serve and volley away, Paulo! :bounce:

Early wins for Mathieu and Massu

Play is now under way on Court One as we wait the arrival of Martina Hingis. Two matches have been completed so far with Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in fine form on his return to grass, registering a 6-1 6-2 victory over young British hopeful Luke Bambridge.

‘PHM’ has had a difficult season with injuries so far but looked in top condition at Calderstones Park this afternoon: “I need to get some fitness and play more matches on the grass if I’m able to compete well at Wimbledon” he said.

Meanwhile Nottingham’s Luke Bambridge remained positive despite his defeat: “He’s a good player, it’s hard to hold serve because he’s got such a good return. Today was a good opportunity to work on my game and get some practice in. But I’ve got loads of school work to do now before Wimbledon!” he said.

In the second match, Chilean Nicolas Massu was the star attraction up against 17-year-old American Denis Kudla. ‘Vampiro’, as Massu is known, started well and took the first set 6-4 showing the skills that won him two Olympic Gold medals back in 2004.

Kudla, who played in Junior Wimbledon last year, struggled to adjust to the grass and was broken again in the second set as Massu ran out the winner, 6-4 6-3.

“It was hard because I’m playing on grass for the first time here this year. He (Massu) is a great player and he came out on top but this is a great preparation for Wimbledon for me.” said Kulda.

Meanwhile on Court One this afternoon, Eugenie Bouchard of Canada beat Chloe Murphy of Great Britain 8-0 in a girl’s first to eight pro set.

Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) beat Luke Bambridge (GBR) 6-1 6-2

One of my friend was in Liverpool and saw Paulo. As there was nothing to do in the player space, he was on a chair under the sun to have a nice face :D
She will send me pics from his match...

Good start on grass :bounce:

Mathieu is our Men's Champion for 2010

Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu is the 2010 Men’s Champion at the Tradition-ICAP Liverpool International Tennis Tournament.

The former world number 12 beat Chilean Nicolas Massu 6-3, 6-2, in another impressive display on Centre Court.

Both men qualified for today’s final having remained undefeated in singles matches throughout the tournament. However it was Mathieu who was the favourite, with Massu playing on grass for the first time in three years this week.

The first set was an even contest early on, as both players held serve with a powerful display from the baseline. But it was the class of Mathieu that shone through, breaking in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead and serve out for the first set.

The Frenchman’s variety and movement on the grass was the undoing of Massu, as the Chilean struggled to adapt to the unfamiliar surface.

Mathieu continue to dominate on serve, winning cheap points and preventing his opponent from developing any rhythm in the rallies. He threatened to break in the third game of the second set, but Massu held on, determined to maintain an unbeaten head-to-head record against the Frenchman.

The 28-year-old wasn’t to be denied though, as he continued to press and broke Massu twice more to serve for the match at 5-2. A hold to love was to come, as Mathieu won 6-3, 6-2, to become the Men’s Champion for 2010.

“I think we had a great match today, I think we played some good points so I’m really happy.” said Mathieu.

“The event is great. I didn’t see much of the city as it’s my first time in Liverpool, but maybe I’ll come back to see the nightlife for a few days!”

Meanwhile Massu admitted that he struggled to adapt to the grass: “Mathieu played really well, I think the last time I played on a grass court was in 2007, I like it but I need to practice more to know how to play here.”

“I want to say thank you, it’s my first time here, this exhibition had a lot of people here, the crowd today was full, we had a good time and hopefully I can come back. I like to play in England so see you soon!”

So here are all the results from Liverpool:

Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) beat Luke Bambridge (GBR) 6-1 6-2
Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) beat Andre Sa (BRA) 7-6 (4), 6-2
Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) beat Frederik Sletting-Johnsen (NOR) 7-6 (5), 1-6
Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) beat Nicolas Massu (CHI) 6-3, 6-2

Well done Paulo :hatoff:

I can't believe I didn't get to see him win a title (well an exhibition, but whatever) in my HOME CITY  :tears:

Hopefully he will play there again next year.

06-22-2010, 07:09 PM
Well done today :yeah:. Got a win under the belt.

next playing Misha :scared:

Allez Paulo.

06-23-2010, 12:08 AM
Paulo :D

Now go get Misha, Paulo!

The Hooded Claw

Congrats Paulo. Youzhny will be tough for him as always, but he did lose to Kiefer, who has barely played all year at Halle, so there is a chance.

Thank God I'm neutral about Mahut and Isner, it's 36-35 now :spit:

06-23-2010, 07:22 PM
53-53 !! Allez Nico !!

The Hooded Claw
06-23-2010, 07:37 PM
Somebody stop the MADNESS :hysteric:

Thank God it's not Paulo out there , I think most posters to this forum would be dead of nerves by now.

06-24-2010, 06:46 AM
Paulo-Misha match disappeared from tomorrow's schedule of play  I wonder what happens!

It's amazing how stronge Nico is physically and mentally. Especially, mentally
BTW, I Isner bores me. His body language is irritating :p

Paulo-Misha match disappeared from tomorrow's schedule of play  I wonder what happens!

I just saw that, but I heard nothing about a retirement.

06-24-2010, 05:17 PM
Hopefully the match disappearing off-schedule doesn't mean bad news

No one deserved to lose the Isner/Nico match. That's a cliche but it really is true for this one. :hatoff: and  to both.

Isner could barely stand up by the time play was called off last night, I doubt positive body language was the first thing on his mind :p

06-24-2010, 07:10 PM
Paulo's match against Misha friday at noon on court 18.

Allez Paulo.

06-24-2010, 10:50 PM
i was at Paulo's match against Marc that day. He looks very confident and in good form although the serving was still a little bit shaky. I didn't know he won the Liverpool title before that, so that should be the reason of the confidence then. It's so good to see him start to win again. His game and style is coming back, and if he can keep like that, he will have the chance in the coming match vs Youzhny.

and I watched the 1st day and 2nd day of the historic Mahut vs Isner match as well, but had to give it up when it was 43-44, coz i needed to catch the train to Edinburgh. Poor Nico, just know he finally lost it. He seems to me should more deserve to win this match from those good fighting in Isner's serving games and nice volley playing style.

06-25-2010, 02:44 PM
He won  woohoo

06-25-2010, 03:08 PM
I thought he was so done after missing those BPs in the first game of the fifth

WOW. Lots of vamos going on out there :D Guess we have to thank Liverpool exhibition for a number of reasons ;)
It's been a while since he wins two consecutive matches, hasn't it?

VAMOS PAULO! :rocker2:

06-25-2010, 03:18 PM
VAMOS PAULO! :rocker2:

06-25-2010, 05:22 PM
5th set win woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

06-25-2010, 08:25 PM
 Magic court 18, isn't it? i am thinking to come back to London to watch his 4th round (highly probably play against Nadal) if he beats De Bakker in the 3rd round tomorrow.

ALLEZ Paulo :woohoo:

06-25-2010, 08:59 PM
OMG He did it !:eek::eek: :bounce:

Winning in 5 sets against this guy is just unbelievable, I'm happy !!!!
Youzhny is so lucky against frenchies in general...

06-26-2010, 01:30 PM
watching him right now. so much intensity and emotion to set up set point

and he did it. first set in the bag!

06-26-2010, 02:15 PM
a drop volley? a rejuvenated phm?

06-26-2010, 03:50 PM
Paulo in R4 :worship:

06-26-2010, 03:50 PM
I knocked PHMs efforts on this thread a few months ago, but have to say how brilliant his run at wimbledon has been.

He's played great tennis, shown tonnes of fight and held his nerve.

Very pleased for him and his fans.

06-26-2010, 03:55 PM
PAULO!!!!!!

So good to see him like this again, with all the vamos and that BIG allez in the end! :rocker2:
After all he's been through for the past 6 months or so... with all the work he put in, he deserves a good run like this

06-26-2010, 04:02 PM

I can't believe he's been so strong mentally in these 2 last matches... he won several tie breaks, a 5 sets...wow respect Paulo :p

Nadal is playing, he's not very good...wait and see :)

06-26-2010, 04:08 PM

I can't believe he's been so strong mentally in these 2 last matches... he won several tie breaks, a 5 sets...wow respect Paulo :p

I think he draws some of those mental strength from Nico Mahut

06-26-2010, 04:10 PM
Very pleased with him so far this wimby.

The Hooded Claw
06-26-2010, 05:52 PM
Paulo :yeah:

Best I've seen him play since I can't remember. Really solid stuff, especially on the serve. Good luck in R4! Pity Petzschner couldn't come through, but you can't have everything.

As an added bonus Paulo kept his shirt off for absolutely ages during one change of ends :D

06-27-2010, 03:16 PM
Firstly congrats his win against Misha,I always want Paulo to win when he faces Misha.
Paulo vs Nadal, the best way to train Paulo's mental state.

COME ON PAULO! :rocker2:

The Hooded Claw
06-28-2010, 07:21 PM
I was expecting a bit more than 8 games after Nadal's struggles with Haase and Petzschner, then again I wasn't expecting Paulo in the last 16 in the first place.

Hope the improved form bodes well for the second half of the season.

06-28-2010, 07:36 PM
I was wishing for the same battle than in 2006 in Roland Garros between Paulo ans Rafa ...
Anyway i'm happy for him, when you see the beginning of his season 2010, i wasn't expecting him in the 2nd round !!!

You made me dream and cry Paulo in this Wimbledon !!! I hope you're gonna play like that now ;)

06-28-2010, 07:40 PM
Nadal is playing better and better, but still I expected Paulo to put a fight more, but I heard Paulo had a timeout, hope he is ok.
I'm pleased he beat Misha at least! :)

06-28-2010, 07:50 PM
It gets me nervous
Fed and Nadal always improve their game against frenchies. Both played poorly their 2 first matches, then suddenly find again their tennis !
(arnaud / paulo = 3 easy sets)

ugh...I thought Nadal was injured ?? :o

06-29-2010, 03:28 AM
Didn't Paulo run into another injury again here? :awww:

Anyhoo, I'm trying to think this loss is better than had he lead two sets to love and ended up losing it. Straight forward loss, everyone left with a relatively healthy mental status

IF ONLY he could stay injury-free, we're going to have something to celebrate the rest of the year

06-29-2010, 06:15 AM
I think Paulo was tired, he also said that to Nadal..
Now he has one week to have some rest and to come back on clay at Bastad then at Gstaad !
I'm sad he didn't choose Stuttgart because I wanted to go there... I have to wait until Metz to see him again !
By the way, I just keep in my mind his 3 victories in Wimbledon which can give him some trust ! He needs some to come back and especially against Youzhny, it was so a pleasure !
Now some rest and then go go go on clay :D

06-29-2010, 04:30 PM

06-30-2010, 09:24 AM
Merci bien pour ta réponse ;)
