no Roddick?

no Roddick?

I don't know how many times this has to be explained this year but Roddick has already got an ATP 250 win and runner up this year and only two of his 250 tournaments count towards his ranking. That means entering a 250 would only be productive if he won the tournament, and even then 100 points isn't going to jump him up the rankings.

The only reason Roddick would enter any 250s for the rest of the year is to gain match practice, that is the reason he entered Queens last week as well as getting used to the switch of surface before a grand slam.

I think the biggest reason the ATP has introduced this rule is because players were complaining about how long the season was not long ago. The players (more specificly the top 30) now only have to play the 4 grand slams, the 9 masters series, 2/3 ATP 500s, 2/3 ATP 250s. Which if you calculate it all a top 30 player would have to play a minimum of six months of tournament tennis over a twelve month period (not including Davis Cup).

Is there any reason then, why some of the top players keep on packing useless 250 tournaments in to their schedules? Just to maintain match practice and rhythm? It doesn't make sense to play 20+ tournaments (like Djokovic and Verdasco do a lot) when you don't really have to.

1) money
2) rankingly speaking, to gain extra 250 points, so even if you fail at defend the title your ranking remains the same

You have to play a minimum of 18 tournaments anyway. Also in 500 and 250 tournaments there is not a guaruntee the player will win the tournament. If you look at Djokovic's current ranking breakdown you will see he has not made it passed a 250 quarterfinal this year and has only played two 250s over the past twelve months. This means it is very likely Djokovic will continue to play a couple more 250 tournaments this year.

Out of his four 500 tournaments he has entered over the past twelve months (two this year) he has won three of them and three of them are counted for his ranking. If you think about it thre two that he has to defend this year, if he was to not enter another 500 this year an extra 250 tournament would be added to his countable tournaments, another advantage of entering more 250s.

Verdasco is an extreme case of a player who just continually plays 250s almost every week. I think it is very much about the appearance fee he would recieve to go to enter these tournaments. There is really no other reason for him to enter so many uncountable tournaments. He is getting better though, he has only entered two 250s so far this year and three 500s this year, which is the minimum he needs to enter. Given the fact that he has not won three 500s and two 250s this year he will coninue to enter if you purely look at it from a ranking perspective.

Also as the poster above me has stated, money is a big factor for a top player showing up to those smaller tournaments. I think everyone on MTF knows how much Djokovic is all about the money (look into his switch to the head racquet at the end of 2008 and his entry into the Brisbane International in 2009) and understandably so, he is young and doesn't want to be playing into his mid 30s.

He's not defending any pts from last year, so, no loss.
