WC for Thomas Schoorel

Second WC to Matwé Middelkoop.

Nederlandse inbreng
Middelkoop is dus in vorm.

Oscar actually has a decent draw for two rounds, at least. Unfortunately, it's not likely to matter. Sidorenko probably will beat him.

Filip v. Kamke is a tough R1.

I think Gremelmayr will beat Crazy Dani.

I think one of Cuevas, Darcis, Schukin or Luczak will win the title. I'm rooting for Steve, he needs a good result.

Struff's results have been very impressive lately and I am looking forward to seeing him play. He could actually take out Darcis if he plays well.

Yeah, he seemed to be injured, he was grabbing at his lower back. But in general, he's wild now, not just his attitude, but his game is wild. Absolutely no consistency anymore, and his serve is even worse that it was. I thought I remember reading he was taking a break because he was burnt out, I guess he's playing for money at this point.

It's not too surprising, most players who have a great year after being long time challenger players end up failing to hold their positions. He is SO similar to Patricia Mayr of the WTA, their careers paths and attitudes. Same thing happening to him this year happened to her.

I do think though that he could surprise and have a good run in the next few weeks.

Some reports from the matches I watched yesterdag at Scheveningen:

Sidorenko-Hernandez 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (0)

In this match I only watched the third set and the end of the second. But what a weird and entertaining match it was with a lot of incidents. The first one was at a moment that Sidorenko served. It looks like he hits an ace but the umpire gives it out when she watched the mark. Previously there were a lot of difficult lines decisions where the players were bitching about. Sidorenko gives the comment "how much did he pay you?" and he gets a warning. Later on there was a rally when Hernandez goes to the net, Sidorenko plays a body shot and Oscar could avoid the ball. Hernandez was furious and Sidorenko said: "I said sorry, it's in the game". The next point Hernandez tried to hit Sidorenko on the head with his serve! Sidorenko asked for a warning but the umpire refused. In the third set Sidorenko broke early and Hernandez broke back quite rapidly. At 5*-6 Sidorenko served to stay in the match and saved two match points. In the tie-break Sidorenko took an early lead and Hernandez was frustrated again. At 4-0 Hernandez hits the billboards a few time with the ball and he also hits a linejudge accidentally (I guess). Another warning for Hernandez so it became 5-0 and it was over.

I think Sidorenko's win was well deserved. I didn't see him playing very often before but I like his game. Hernandez was moonballing all the time with a lot of spin as usual. He was quite annoying when he was talking all the time when Sidorenko prepared to serve.

Gremelmayr-Koellerer 6-3, 6-3

It was a classic Crazy Dani match. First game of the match he got broken, he broke back immediately but got broken again the game after. Since then Daniel went crazy. He was bitching about the balls all over the time. When he served he wanted all the balls from the other end off the court. Of course there were a lot of incidents with the umpire, the linejudges and the spectators. One time he were out played by Gremelmayr and he showed his middle finger on the corner of the court. A linejudge saw it and told the umpire. Daniel gets a warning for it. At the end off the first set the ATP Supervisor has to come on court to tell Daniel his behaviour has reached the limit. Of course Daniel didn't listen and gets a few other warnings. I was really hoping for a third set but Dani couldn't get his game together anymore.

Gremelmayr player very decent. He doesn't hit the ball with a lot of power but he plays with a lot of spin and he barely makes unforced errors. A decent player but when Daniel plays his game without all the drama he should be able to beat him.

Silva-Gaudio 1-6, 6-2, 6-3

Gaston started the match very well. He dictated from the baseline and Brazilian couldn't do anything. Gaudio's backhand and his dropshots were great. In the second set he started to make more and more UE's. Silva played a little bit more solid but he hasn't to do a lot to win the set. Gaudio didn't show any frustration but in the first rally of the third set he hammered the ball out of the stadium in the middle of the rally. Since then he didn't care about the match anymore and played very arrogant. He got a few words with the umpire and it was clear he couldn't win the match anymore.
In my opinion Gaudio had the control in the match and if he played well he would win without too much trouble. But he didn't care about the match in the third set and Silva took advantage of it.

Schoorel-Mertens 3-6, 6-1, 6-3

Given the form of both I expected Schoorel could win the match. He dictated the rally's and he got a really good serve. In the first set he made a lot of UE's and Mertens played solid without doing anything special. In the second set Thomas became more consistent and could outplay Mertens with his groundstrokes from the baseline. In the third set Schoorel broke Mertens quite early but immediately got broken back. A few games later Thomas broke again Mertens' serve. The game after Thomas was able to save a few break points and since then it was clear Schoorel would win the match.
A deserved win for Thomas. He hits to much UE's but had also a lot of nice winners and dictated the game. Mertens isn't a very special player at all I think. He is quite solid from the baseline but if his opponent is better than he doesn't have any weapons to take control.

Later I will post some pics I took.

I've never rated Jasper Smit very highly and my opinion hasn't changed after today. I must admit that it is the best I have seen him play (i.e. he managed to keep the number of UEs down and controlled his nerves better than usual at crucial points in the match), but he remains extremely error-prone and leans a lot on his serve. He did really well to keep up with Junqueira in the baseline rallies, but Iván isn't too far off saying that Serena Williams could have taken out the Argentine. Junqueira's performance was lackluster; his movement was impaired and his groundstrokes often turned into moonballs rather than flat or topspin-laden shots. He would certainly be outclassed by Serena in the service department; his serve was truly pathetic.

Nonetheless, Junqueira kept fighting throughout the match, something that cannot be said for Roko Karanusic. I simply felt embarrassed for the Croat (who also looked like a tramp, given that he hasn't shaved for like weeks). Gremelmayr kept telling him to move his legs, but to no avail. He strang the UEs together as if there was no tomorrow and lost to probably one of the weakest players in the draw. Felder did fight very well, but he lacks natural ability and is seemingly dependent on his will power and his opponents' off-days for his wins. The deplorable level of quality of this match is only matched by Karanusic' indifference, as he basically tanked the last few games in a style he is unfortunately all too familiar for. It's sad, because a Karanusic that cares and manages to fix his brain would have routed Felder in no time. It's no surprise to see he has slid out of the Top 300.

The match between Renavand and Dasničres de Véigy was a decent one. There was really nothing between the two, but Dasničres was simply more collected when it mattered. In the first tie-break he was up 4-0, only to find Renavand turning things around completely, before stringing together some horrible errors to hand his compatriot the set. I didn't see the second set tie-break, but it wouldn't be hard to envisage a similar scenario. Both guys were really grinding it out, resulting in long, amusing rallies. I thought the match would be the most boring of the 1R, but I was clearly mistaken.

Still, it was quite unfortunate to see the Krajinovic - Kamke and Luczak - Vagnozzi match-ups, as these four easily displayed the best tennis I saw today. Especially the Serbian-German meeting was a joy to watch. I missed the entire first set, but in the second and third set it was clear that Kamke was the better player. It also became clear to me why he did so well at RG and Wimbledon; he simply improved a great deal and will fully deserve his spot in the Top 100 (possibly next week?). His groundstrokes were amazing. Krajinovic is obviously extremely talented and fought very hard. He has got some attitude problems, I think, but that can be fixed (though hanging out with Karanusic can only be a bad influence). This match was really so good, that I am not sure whether the final can top it; the rallies were long and most of them ended in crisp winners.

As for Luczak - Vagnozzi, it was clear that Luczak would win this, as he was more solid and simply a better player than Vagnozzi. But Simone really impressed me. He is clearly in form and often outplayed Luczak at his own game. He was down a break in the second set, but then for four games in a row everything seemed to work and Luczak was visibly surprised to find himself in a third set. I didn't see the final set though, as I left to watch Smit - Junqueira, but am not surprised to see that Luczak clinched it. There was also good sportsmanship from both guys in this match, which was nice to see.

Anyways, when I arrived back at the match, the last point had just been played and some positively and embarrassingly moronic fan girls (who I a) presume had never heard of nor seen Luczak before today and b) fully expect to be members of MTF) shouted something at Luczak, causing him to give the most awkward smile and wave I have ever seen a player produce at a tennis match. Needless to say, he then hurried off to the changing room to get away from these non-fans who had not once visibly or audibly supported Luczak during the match.

I only saw the first set of Cuevas - Fransen, as I was getting rather cold and the match was truly uninspiring. I like Fransen, but he belongs to a different level and only won three games in that first set because of his big serve. Cuevas was never troubled on his own serve, despite now playing great tennis. He will now take on Smit, who is a slightly better version of Fransen, so it is safe to say he has a cakewalk into the QF.

I will decide in the morning whether I'm heading to Scheveningen again tomorrow. The weather will be good, but the OOP is only so-so and the ticket price is rather steep compared to previous years

Anyways, Kamke already eased past Junaid as was to be expected, 6-2 6-3.

Gremelmayr should take out Muńoz-De la Nava, 6-3 5-5*

I've known it for years that Kamke has the game for the top 100. The potential has always been visible.

I also called Petzschner making the top 100, the DC team and winning a Slam many years ago, and he did it. I also saw Brown's potential.

Gojowczyk is one of the few players left to make the top 100. Maybe in the end I was right about him as well.

I remember he mentioned in an interview that he would focus on doubles for a while. Doesn't make much sense IMO as he could easily play qualies and reach some main draws with his game.

This is what I thought when I saw his name in the Scheveningen doubles draw. He would most probably have qualified, so unless he has serious physical issues that prevent him from playing singles, a focus on doubles seems entirely nonsensical.

Anyone watched the match?

I watched the 2nd set. Gremelmayr had the chance to close it at 5-2 but Schoorel broke him and finally Denis was able to win it 6-4.

Schoorel has a good serve (nice height), dangerous lefty. To be honest it was the first time I watched him and not enough to say if he has any chance to be a good player.

Hi CoocooCachoo! did see him playing before? Do you believe he is good enough to do it quite well on the challenger tour?

Luinir
07-11-2010, 04:04 PM
I watched him 3 times in this tournament. (against Silva, Sidorenko and Schukin)

He's a rhythm player i think. When he's on, playing really good, deep shots, winners on forehand and backhand side, service winners etc.. But when he's off, tons of ue is coming... Talented player but a little bit inconsistent. He can do well on the challenger tour for sure. :)

All my predictions this week have been horribly off, so take what I say with a grain of salt :p

I saw Schoorel for the first time two years ago in a Future, and have seen him some other times since. I was much impressed with him from the beginning and think he has quite a lot of potential. He's a typical Dutch player though, in the sense that he is so error-prone that he is likely to lack consistency.
