WWW Halle Final Federer vs Hewitt?

andy neyer

A nice match in a final just like in the old days. The defending Wimby champion against a former Wimby champion who's been struggling with several injuries in the last years. As many know, the story between these 2 goes way back to their junior days with Hewitt owning Federer most of the time but then things started to change over the years... Tomorrow obviously LLeyton will be going as the big underdog but he's playing well and knows he can beat Federer given that he did it many times back in the day.

I hope it's a great match.

Hewitt vs Federer on grass:

2001 - s-Hertogenbosch SF Hewitt over Federer 6-4, 6-2
2004 - Wimbledon QF Federer over Hewitt 6-1, 6-7(1), 6-0, 6-4
2005 - Wimbledon SF Federer over Hewitt 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4)
2008 Wimbledon R4 Federer over Hewitt 7-6(7), 6-2, 6-4

True, but it's only really before 2003 that Hewitt dominated Federer. From AO 2004, Federer has won 15 straight matches against Hewitt. But I guess that doesn't matter - he had won 12 straight matches gainst Soderling before losing at this year's FO and he also won 12 straight matches against Davydenko before losing to him at last year's WTF. If Federer plays the way he did against Petzschner today then I fancy Hewitt taking a set at least.

Ideally, Roger in three, with at least one tight set, probably the one Hewitt will win.

But realistically, Roger in straights.

Bad analogy. Davy was in the best form of his carrer in London and Doha beating Roger& Nadal in back-to-back torurnaments plus Soderling and Del Po.
Soderling played 100% better than he has ever did against Roger to win in 4 sets.
I'm positive Hewitt isn't going to play the best match of his life to beat ROger tomorrow.

HarryMan
06-12-2010, 03:54 PM
I had previously never seen Petzschner play but he was just going for his shots and making it most of the times today. Hewitt doesn't have such a fire power to trouble Federer. I think Federer can handle Hewitt's game quite well. Should be straight sets tomorrow.

ApproachShot
06-12-2010, 03:58 PM
True, it wasn't the best analogy but I guess the point I was trying to make is that although unbeaten streaks against a certain player is a good indication of what might come, it makes the outcome of a future match by no means a foregone conclusion. Needless to say that Hewitt is going to have to play a great match to win in the final tomorrow but it would be foolish to count him out completely.

Would love to see Hewitt win, might spur him on to have some real success again, he was a great player to watch at the top level. It's a shame he couldn't have the same longevity as Fed or Roddick but then I guess he peaked earlier than them. Realistically can't give much of a chance against Fed though, he just has his number.

Hopefully it is a very tight and entertaining 3 setter with Roger prevailing in the end. I think they have both looked equally good throughout the tournament. Federer should take this one though.

One of the worst posters in the history of MTF you are. No respect for any player other than Nadal. How do you even give Nadal credit in any of his wins if apparently all the other players are terrible? You're just a walking fail. You probably sit there in real life can't even play actual tennis and try to mimic your idol by hitting forehands and end up hitting your head each time.

Roger will likely end up winning but Lleyton has a better chance than usual tomorrow and causing the upset. Depends on many factors, such as their serves, if Roger is more consistent off the ground and in general tomorrow, and if Lleyton goes for his shots or gets too passive. If Lleyton is assertive and takes advantage of his opportunities he could end Roger's winning streak against him.

OK, so recap of Fed's last several non-Slam tournaments: Benneteau, Davydenko, Baghdatis, Berdych, Gulbis, Montanes, Soderling. Each defeat more perfect and poetic than the one before it.

Kolya and Robin had both lost 10000 times in a row to Fed, but the match-up game-wise had nothing to do with their ability to finally beat him. It was about opponent's mentality and Fed's worsening game. He's beatable now and they all know it.

Hewitt is a very strong grass player with a better mentality than all those I mentioned combined. And you think Hewitt can't win?
