Nadal beats Istomin at Queens 7-6 4-6 6-4

Not a great match for Nadal. Lots of wide forehands, the slice wasn't always working either. Istomin played well at times, especially the second set. He's got the guts to play against the top guys.

Nadal couldn't serve out the match at 5-3 40-15, (wide forehand, missed smash). He had to work hard to hold his service games and got broken a few times.

Definitely needs to step it up if he wants to get Wimbledon.

Nadal almost choked at the end.

Not good, but I don't worry. Grass is tricky, especially at Queen's and after RG. At least he is not out like Roddick and soon Djokovic.

Similar to the Nishikori match 2 years ago.

Ugly match by Nadal, which played his C- game and still managed to get a win. Reminded me of his match with Nishikori here in 2008, he allowed the opponent to dominate him and made too many errors. Means little, and I am eager to see how well he returns Feli's serve.

He played well yesterday, no-one was talking. He struggled today, he won't win Wimbledon and isn't a good #1. Typical MTF logic.

For sane individuals who were actually watching the match with a clear mind and without rose colored glasses, you could see Rafa had an aggressive mindset at times, but failed with the execution too much. Then at times he was too defensive. Missed a lot on the forehand and the serve was up and down. Conditions were horrible out there today. Rafa definitely didn't play great but got the job done in the end.

Istomin played pretty well until it mattered, then he made too many errors and Rafa stepped it up a bit and made Istomin beat him, which he couldn't do. But Denis can take out of the match the fact he can play with top guys.

Rafa will need to play better tomorrow to beat Lopez but what's most important is he got another match and more time on court on this surface, which is what truly matters.

Good practice for Nadal, guy has barely played on grass for almost 2 years (only 2 exhibitions). Daniel gave him the chance to contact grass, but Iztomin has given him much more trouble, which is the best way to start getting some steam in the engine.

Your point kinda makes no sense as NONE of us can really no if he was faking. Different sources pointed out that doctors warned him against playing lots of tennis in succession because of his knees, hence why he skipped out on Barcelona this year. Maybe he simply just got a little cramped as he just finished playing two weeks of tennis? So if he was really cramped, what should he have done, retire immediately or aggravate it because some tennis tards watching will accuse him of not being a sportsman.

He has played more tennis than pretty much anyone on the tour(which is probably a factor). He waited for that second set to end and than got a time out, he got back on court and played on.
Playing in temperatures that vary from hot and cold with lots of wind causes the body to tense up, cramp up, for someone like Nadal who has played so much tennis lately its only natural for him to have some minor issues.

In defense of Nadal, Istomin played really well, and his game is suited for grass. There is not much anybody can do when the opponent has a great first serve, and a heavy forehand, it's just the way it is on grass. And that's true even against less talented opponents, than Istomin. On top of that, he has the ability to fire backhand winners. I wouldn't be surprised if he won more point than Nadal. The spaniard will be fine. Btw, Cilic and Djokovic already out, and Murray's on his way...

And saying that Rafa has no grass game at all show how poor is your knowledge about tennis considering the fact that Rafa won Wimbledon and was 2 times in the final.

People seem to forget about the opponent. Istomin is a VERY good player. I knew it would get tough before the match. My original thought when realizing he would be playing Istomin was "uh oh". But I had faith he could do it, but that yes, it was going to get tough. And it looks like I was right. Istomin played very well, and Nadal was barely average. Still, he managed to win and close out the match. He is doing a lot better than most top players, many out already. I also think a match like this can be positive for Rafa. He can play a tough opponent, and still win. It's good for his confidence and fighting spirit.

Rafa needed 3 sets to do it, but at least he won. All you haters should really stop hating. It's getting embarrassing already. Federer is not my favorite, but do I attack Federer? NO. I admire his game and I always praise him when he wins. If only Fed fans could do the same about Rafa. Sadly, I know what will never happen. Sigh..

But honestly, you are so much more interesting than TV comedy shows, you are real life crazy  It's like what else will the dunce say? For that, I definitely appreciate your insights.

Call me whatever you want, I have seen enough matches of Nadal to come to the conclusion, that he is a cheat and the very opposite of a true and fair sportsman.

He does everything to win matches, intimidating the opponent before the match, letting him wait before beginning to play, getting coached by his uncle , waiting for his sign to challenge, taking too long between points and especially when facing breakpoints, calling for the trainer, whenever he is in danger of losing a match - to be continued.

He is a good tennisplayer, but a poor sport imo.

If he strolls trough the field now, you can be sure, everything is ok with his knees or with his back.

Yeah he did at the end of the 2nd set, which he lost, so now according to some, that means he wasn't actually injured but cheating.

It seemed to be his thighs/hip.

I don't know yet, but I haven't see anything to say otherwise

With every match Nadal wins his confidence grows and his grass game improves. With the other top players (besides Fed) struggeling a Fedal Final is already shaping up for Wimbledon.

If Nadal goes to the final Fed is in trouble because Fed's form always drops against Nadal

Seriously at least try and be objective, people see your name and see your post and just can't take it seriously, it really isn't difficult.

Poor by Rafa's standards today, typical over reaction and bandwagoning going on here though, I've only been reading the forums for a few weeks and I'm beginning to tire with the constant hating and bickering, it seems to be mainly towards Nadal but maybe that is because he has been dominating recently. Intelligent posts are few and far between here. It's a wonder that usual suspects like The Magician and Mjau continue to watch tennis.

Yeah it is because Nadal has been dominating recently, When Fed was winning more it was more towards Fed, if Fed wins again Fed will again be more the target again, and so on.....

It's not a question of "liking" players; it's a question of respecting their ability, and giving them credit for their success, even if you're not a fan of them personally. Being objective involves recognising that even someone you dislike can play good tennis. So that means recognising for example, that Nadal has never been as dominant at Queens as at Wimbledon - being lucky to escape Nishikori in 2008, and losing to Mahut in 2007. Just like Federer is never as dominant on HC TMS as he is in the US Open. So really it has little bearing on the slams.

I mean seriously: one tight match against an in-form player and Nadal is 'done'. That's MTF for you.

I am a recently joined lurker who shares your feelings. It is amazing that forum members who could not even win points much less sets from these pros routinely call them "mugs" and "chokers" from the comfort of their keyboards.

There is some useful info on here which is why I still browse from time to time but it would be hard to recommend the forum to anyone but a die-hard fan who doesn't mind internet pissing matches given the vitriol so frequently displayed.

Nadal seems to particularly disturb the most febrile among them for reasons which must certainly go beyond his tennis.

If the draw is kind, Wimbledon is his.

Jun 7, 2010 1:27 PM | By Sapa-AFP

“Soderling falls heavily in Paris,” headlined the Dagens Nyheter (DN) under a photo of a worried-looking Soderling with his face half hidden behind a towel.
The newspaper noted that Soderling had now “lost a second straight French Open final.”

Rival daily Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) published a photo of Soderling looking imploringly towards the sky.
“Robin Soderling played like a little boy on several break points,” the newspaper estimated. :spit:

“Nadal was a lot stronger than Soderling,” wrote DN in dark letters over two inside pages..."

WHAT A WIN BY NADAL WHAT AN AWESOME WIN THIS WAS. I like the close matches, especially the tie-breakers.

Voo... can you tell us who was the last man (beside Federer) with 14 consecutive grass victories?

Thanks

12 pages for a third-round win at Queens!

And here I was marveling in disbelief at a Nadal win thread yesterday that wasn't littered with namecalling.

This board writes itself sometimes, seriously.

Most of the posts are predictable as hell, but it's funny to see people who come in to jeer get pissy and defensive.

To bad Istomin chooked a couple of service games, the last one being up 40-15.

Moonballer looks like a clown in his shirt and played like one.

What pathetic mug you are.

BTW, Istomin played pretty well.

Roddick loses = 8 pages
Djokovic loses = 7 pages
Cilic Loses = 4 pages
Davydenko loses = 2 pages
Federer wins = 2 pages
Nadal wins = almost 13 pages

Some are really affected by Nadal's results. I guess that's what happens when you have someone who hasn't been beaten in his last 24 matches.

Istomin played a great match but Nadal's fight and extreme confidence that he is currently in, due to his unbeaten streak, won him this match. And that's what champions do, find a way to win.

You see now this is a Federer fan with class. A true tennis fan who does not have to resort to bitterness or hatred. We can actually discuss tennis without turning into a five year old.

Nadal is a great champion and the things he seems to be able to achieve, especially on clay, may never be done again in tennis once he is gone. I just don't understand the need to belittle either of Nadal or Federer's achievement which happens a lot in here. They are rewriting history in their own unique way, and it is actually great for me to get to see such legends live, because all good things come to an end one day. :)

Exactly:worship:, Federer and Nadal are players that come once in a lifetime. I feel privileged to be watching tennis in a time where both of them rewrite history. I have nothing but respect for Roger, he is the best to ever play this game. Some of the things he has done in tennis are mind boggling.:worship:

yea i totally agree.
once both of them are retired, we will start to miss them.
i hope the next guys to dominate this sport are just as classy as federer and nadal.

only once they both retire will everyone truly appreciate what they have achieved and done for the sport and how they have attracted new fans to the sport and made tennis very popular everywhere.

their great individual achievements and their iconic rivalry aswell as their class will be remembered forever!

Oh great another bandwagoner who thinks liking everyone makes him "objective" Nadal, who has basically made the clay court season the most boring and awful time of the year for half a decade, deserves all the hate he gets :wavey:

i do not like everybody but I do not hate anybody. Grasp the difference? I appreciate Nadals skill on clay, I do not really like his game on grass for example.

I agree completely with this, but I still think that Nadal plays an ugly style of tennis and I very much dislike his oncourt behaviour as well as I'm not too fond of the personality he displays off-court.
There is no arguing his achievements though, and regarding style, to each his own.

I was more fair & balanced than most of the hypocritical, doomsayer Nadaltards when Rafa was "struggling".

Rafa's fans make it out like he's in horrible form, but I actually thought Nadal played at a pretty high level at Doha and the AO. He has clearly raised his level since late -09. People have to realize that he never was a dominant force on HC even at his best, but merely one of several players capable of winning big titles. You wont find that many tournaments in which he played significantly better on hard than he has this year (AO and Doha) and even then he usually had to win some extremely tight matches. He's just a much better player on clay and wont even have to step it up to be extremely hard to stop at RG. That's if he stays healthy of course.

See!
