Slow start but he played pretty well from then on and his serve was clicking. Always nice to see him play on grass, his movement is so

The serve was on fire in the second set. In the last game he hit a 223 km/h ace, and also a 211 km/h, it's good to see he can still bomb them. :)

Quite good match from Roger, some great shots produced.

He looks like he was born on grass, it's unbelievable how good he feels on this kind of surface.
Movement, volleys, everything.

I recall he served a 134-135mph ace at Wimbledon, but I think this one clocks in at 139mph. I'm not sure if it is his fastest, but it must be pretty close.

Roamed

Wikipedia says his fastest was 137mph so this is certainly faster than what they've got listed there :)

Queens and Halle should be 500 events but that doesn't mean the Spanish tournaments have to be downgraded (though I have always thought that it is a crime that Hamburg got downgraded for Madrid :o )

They also recorded a Nieminen serve at 218 km/h. Speed gun seemed a tad off during the match.

Good form = losing 1st round of RG to Roddick from 2 sets to one up while barely serving above 170 km/h even on the first serves?

NYCtennisfan
06-09-2010, 12:06 AM
Federer found the velocity on his serve during Madrid and RG. His average 1st serve km/h or mph against Soderling was the highest it has ever been although Federer hitting a lot of the T on the deuce side had a lot to do with it. He has had a heavy serve in his 1st round match at RG.

Pete Sampras lost a lot of things as he got older, but serve velocity wasn't one of those things. You can continue to hit big on the serve well into your thirties.

The 223 kh/h serve is probably a mistake though. 212-215 km/h is Federer's ceiling on serve velocity.

Oh, wow! That was so uncalled for. But at least you admitted in a roundabout way that the reason Roger got the ranking back last year is because Rafa was injured.

:haha: All the good players are at Queens.

Yeah, I noticed that, too.

Probably. There is one player, the No.1 player, that it would at least be in doubt.

But I'm being mean, I'll leave you Fed fans to enjoy your man's win today.

Jarkko has not been in good form. His record in MD ATP events is now 9-14 this season. It was a good match, but let's not get carried away here.

Impressive performance from Roger, good serving, good at the net, good movement, good timing and conviction on his shots. Of course, Jarkko has absolutely nothing in his game to beat Roger, as their H2H shows.

Queens definitely should be a 1000 event and Madrid and Monte Carlo should switch as mandatory/non-mandatory events.

I love Roger, and he's definitely the most talented player on tour right now, but his ranking is where it belongs, and this is a ridiculous comment. He belongs where the numbers tell him he belongs, he isn't entitled to the #1 position just because of his name, he isn't bigger than the game and his results haven't been good enough to be ahead of Rafa. It is what it is.

Jarkko, haha, diving twice at the start of the 2nd set, great point there :)

Great netplay by Roger. He's really been tearing it up volleying this year, even though sometimes I think he has a tendency to think a point is over before it really is and gets lazy with the movement.

His bh (which has been very solid recently) is even better on grass, and a bonafide top echelon weapon.

His FH is still a bit erratic, and his return game is still atrocious, but well you can't have everything. If I was Federer's coach, i'd be drilling that like crazy.

Rather worrying then that Soderling seemed to be returning deeply at will. I guess grass will help.

Nieminen has actually worked to get his serve better and he serves much faster serves now than earlier this season (even in French open there were many serves over 200km/h, yea I know that isn't 218km/h but...). Just saying that speed meter thing might not be too far off.

I agree on both accounts. It's ridiculous Queens isn't even a 500. Making Queens a masters may be a problem if they want to keep 9 masters events, but almost the top players voluntarily play on grass this week anyway.

Filo V.
06-09-2010, 02:57 PM
What?
Someone said Federer is making his way back to #1 where he belongs. What I am saying is simply that if he belongs at #1, the rankings would show that. And his results would be of a #1 player. And neither of those things are true. He isn't entitled to the #1 ranking, he isn't any better than anyone else in that respect.

Filo V.
06-09-2010, 03:02 PM
Jarko hasn't been in good form for 2 years now.
He's been injured a lot. He's played well in challengers but his ATP results haven't been amazing. It's hard to be consistently good when you lack weapons.

Exactly, and it's just not good for the sport to put such little focus on the grass season, it's here and gone. There should be a little more importance put on the season and pump the build up for Wimbledon a couple of notches, so bringing all the top players to one stop before Wimbledon would be wise, and a good barometer on who is going to do well on the grass. Definitely Madrid shouldn't be a mandatory and the fact it's now before Rome going forward is horrible also, Madrid is the weakest of the 3 clay court tournaments, and Tiriac's money is too much of an influence on the ATP instead of making proper decisions for the game.
