Who would win a French Open final between 1996 Michael Stich and 2010 Rafael Nadal?

I have always wondered how well Michael Stich would match up against Nadal on modern clay, say on an overcast heavy day.

Michael was 6'4, and a good baseliner. One of the kinds of players Nadals has nightmares about i.e Del Potro, Solderling etc.

Some key points for consideration in hyperthetical matchup;

The clay in 2009 and 2010 is much faster than the clay in 1996.

Michael Bitch only just got beaten in straights in 1996, losing in 2 tiebreak sets.

2010 Nadal was not playing his best clay court Tennis. On the history sheet it was his best clay season, but he did look very beatable against Almugro.

Michael Stich was an all surface player, like Soderling. Could do well on grass winning Wimbledon.

The 1996 French Open was seen as mickey mouse by many, not having a CC specialist in the last 4.

The crowd would be firmly behind Stich..the French crowd has been hostile toward Nadal.

Stich was much fitter than your Soderlings or your Del Potros. He could keep up a level of play against Nadal for as long as the match went on.

Go.

Technology rackets and strings in 90's were differents,

in 2010 Nadal ( with his big babolat racket and sophisticated strings ) can control the ball and give it multiples effects, if Nadal uses old technology rackets/strings I'm sure he would not be so dominant on clay court,

so if these 2 players use old technology rackets Rafa would have to change his game style ( less top spin/defensive game ), otherwise Stich will have great chance to beat him

What happened to the option 2003 should be banned from making threads. It's the only reason I opened this one and I can't vote  I thought you started a trend and it will be an option in all of your numerous fascinating threads. It won the last time.

Well say Michael Bitch uses the new technology rackets given that it is being played on fast clay. But i's the same for Bitch, think what he can do and create with the new strings too.

Nadal is volunarable in clay..don't fool yourselves kids, just because Soderling was too tired to execute, he showed in that second set how to dismantle Nafael Capsical, and he would have done just that if he wasn't tired from the 5 set semi.

Someone like Michael Bitch would dismantle him!

12 year old nadal would destroy stich on clay.

2008 RG nadal was more dominant than 2010 RG nadal.

2008 RG nadal is the most dominant he has ever been, even more than monte carlo 2010.

in the 2008 RG semis vs djokovic, the first 2 sets rafa was just in god mode.

It was as if Soderling had Joker Bitches lungs transplanted into him in that French Open final..he was breating heavy from quite early on.

Stich of course. With two golden sets and in the last one he would be kind enough to give Rafa one game.

But it's okay to compare him to a NONE SHAM BLUNDER in Robeeen Soderling??

MTF logic is a sweet thang :o

Michael Bitch is one of the legends of the game, he won a slam on the grass, made the finals of SLOW RG in 1996, something even the great Pat Shampras couldn't manage at the same tournament! NO, he couldn't even win a set in his semi, or avoid a big fat BAGEL.

I even hear people comparing Samprases chances on Clay against Nadal (like could he win 1 in 7), I mean come on, where does it end?

This is a perfectly legitimate thread.

Stich was a very talented player, could play on clay, & in some respects could have troubled Nadal (big serve, good net game, shotmaker). BUT he had a single-handed backhand & good though it was, Nadal would eventually have broken it down. An in-form Stich would have had a good chance on other surfaces, though. This is far from being 2003's most idiotic thread.

This idea that one would NEED a double handed backhander to beat Nadal, is it just because he breaks down Federers backhand that people think that he can majically break down all single handers, or is it some sort of scientifically proven point.

Theres plently of top 20 players who have double handers who get demolished by Nadal.

If Stich would fail (unlikely) Petre Korda would finish Nadal off for sure.
I believe even Sampras would beat Nadal on this clay. Sampras was virtually unplayable on Grass and this Clay and Grass are very similar, proven by Nadal succes on both.

The gulf between 1996 clay and 1996 grass, and 2003-2010 grass and 2003-2010 clay is much more significant.

In other words, this grass is not the grass Sampras was dominant on.

But Sampras would probably do better at the French open these days.

Yeah but without the mug draws + chokefests + weak field of the 2010 event.
