What I want to say, is that ranking will punish Federer for his attitude to tournaments other than Grand Slams. Nadal gained this year 3015 more than Roger in 5 Masters 1000. That's a huge difference!

If Roger had 3 masters series tournamants on grass, like Rafa and his clay domain, it might be a different rankings story.

Roger is now like Serena - give me slams to win. I can't blame him.

punish his attitude??? LOL.

the guys have been #1 way longer than nadal. Let see how nadal manages his career when he logs as many miles as federer and has dominated to the same extent.

The numbers don't lie. You earn points by consistently going deep or winning tournaments. I like Fed but he has underwhelmed since winning AO.

It makes sense that Federer only wants to gear up for the slams. I don't fault him for that. He had the first time quarter final dismissal in years and years. We will see if that was just a fluke or if he will dominate for the second half of the year as he normally has done.

Fed's fault for slumping at Miami and Indian Wells. He was favored to win those and didn't. He can only blame himself for losing the #1 this early in the year

Rafa's done great at the MS events, Roger hasn't, so Rafa gets more points. It's not exactly revelatory. :)

Let me ask you OP, are you personally upset that Federer has underperformed there?

Ugh, I know. Even if he had played the level he had in 2009 at those tournaments he would have won both given how much the other top players collapsed there.

Actually, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Rafa only gained like 600 points from the Masters. Most of what he has is what he defended from last year.

Its easier for nadull to rack-up points this time of the year because of a weak clay court era & nadull happens to be the best on clay, but its difficult to do the same on HC because there is much more competion on relative to clay. I only wish we could have better clay courters today to REALLY challenge the 2nd best clay courter of the open era. You know you are in bad shape when the 2nd best clay courter of the era is playing on his WEAKEST surface.

Actually 400pts. He was a beaten finalist at Madrid and went one further

For me the most important are wins of Rafa. Then I look at Federer. So ofcourse if those results of Roger in Masters 1000 tournaments could help Rafa to regain No. 1 spot, then it's good for me. But I'm not a hater, so I don't get excited only because Roger has lost somewhere.

Oh dear... There are 6 Master 1000 on fast courts and 3 on clay... Federer has a huge advantage.
On Clay: 1GS + 3 Master 1000: 5.000 pts
On Hard: 2 GS + 6 Master 1000 + Tennis Master Cup: 13.000 pts
and if it is not enough, we have Wimbledon: 2000 pts more.
Isn't it enough for fast courters????

The difference is that Federer did not defend his points.

What, is it a some kind of conspiracy against Federer that there is no Masters series event on grass?

Just to inform you, there has never been a Masters event on grass. It's not as though the ATP devised a plan to get rid of an already existing grass Masters when they realised that Federer was dominant enough already.

Just in the same way, there have ALWAYS been 3 Masters events on clay. The ATP haven't created extra clay Masters as some kind of conspiracy to give Nadal a boost in the rankings.

I am of the opinion that there should be a Masters on grass, but even if there was, how can you guarantee that Fed would win it? Nadal beat Federer in their last grass court match. Also, Federer is far more vunerable in best of 3 sets, so players like Soderling, Nadal, Roddick and King Oscar would have more chances of gunning him down in a potential grass Masters event.

But you kinda have a point about Madrid, though the Rafatard argument wouldn't be the one I would use. ;)

Federer's schedule is beyond pathetic and he plays more exho's a year than he does Int series events, no news here.

In the last 12 months, Rafa has played 2 fewer tournaments than Fed. 17 and 19 if I read the ATP site correctly.

Roger is soon 29 for christ sake! wait for Nadal to be this age, you will understand; Roger isn't motivated anymore, he is not combative as he use to, it's normal (plus 2kids!).

You know everything i say is trying to be funny + a fail, now that said. I'm not that noob...of course i know the 3 MS on clay are historical tournaments and so on.

It's not conspiracy theory *George Bush and uncle Toni jokes aside ;) but too funny to refrain from em . Current change has helped Nadal even more.

But yeah cannot ignore that there is a disparity in opportunities by surface. There was never ment to be equality in tennis or anything else so the current ranking system is not a very good reflection.
