Wonder if there was much betting going on this match Merton, if so was Anand the underdog?

The betting markets for chess are not deep but Topalov was the slight favourite before the match. It was reasonable, Topalov had the higher ranking, he looked like a difficult match up for Anand, and the match was taking place in Bulgaria.

After the match we found out that Kasparov, Kramnik and Carlsen (the two previous champs and the current #1 ranked player) all helped Anand for this match. An unprecedented fact for chess, it reveals how much theses guys dislike Topalov and especially his manager Danailov.

During the game no outside help is allowed, actually these days players are not even allowed to have cell phones active. But top players have entire teams helping them to prepare, this is something the former Soviets started and perfected. Now they also use computers a lot but still strong backing is important.

Danailov claimed after the match that Topalov's second was more valuable than Kasparov, Kramnik and Carlsen combined. He also claimed his player totally dominated but could not deal the final blow. :awww:

I think it will probably make no difference, but I assume they (the Spanish press) think it will help Sod, who has stated a preference for slower conditions.

It seems an odd thing to do on the day of the final. I assume, if people are commenting on it, that their actions must differ from the norm :)

I mean the press have to find an angle to sell papers, this is a good one as any to suggest it's an underhanded tactic to prevent their hero winning RG.

They used to water the courts after each set on hot days, but they don't do that so much these days.

I find all this total bollocks, if they were going to try to rig the conditions in favour of anyone it would have been Federer in 06-08 and there's no evidence that they did.

The Aussie said that maybe U.S. would have a RG winner again. The American said tersely, he's from Argentina. The Aussie made soothing sounds and said, "Australia will take anyone." American, "I know you will."

So, it's all good, but it's one thing when the TV commentators go off on a tangent but quite another for RADIO!
Well this isn't an interesting match, unfortunately.

Rafa's playing pretty well and not needing to really do much more than that, Robin has basically said "I'd rather you use lube but that's your choice"

Soderling and Stosur made this weekend a shocker

Fedmug at least will always steal a set from Nadal in a final

AJ, enjoying the match?

You know he's loving every minute of it. He'll go into the match thread and say "Good for the game" when Nadal wins his record fifth RG trophy and ascends the No. 1 throne once again.
