I was thinking of doing some Eastbourne stalking but now the stupid organisers have def scuppered that I might pop to Queens quallies on the sunday on the off chance he is there practising. That's if I'm not shattered I'm on holiday next week and don't get back until the saturday night.

I am going with some friends but that is later in the week and with Richard's ranking he might be gone by then so I'm thinking I might go on the monday or tuesday as well if he is playing. Depends on the order of play.

@Immz Yeah I find Queens is a great venue for watching him practise, you can get so close there and at Qualie weekend the grounds aren't very busy at all. Certainly enjoyed watching his hour long practises in 2008.

Before then. The queue goes up massively between 6 and 7am. Last year on one of the days I was there I heard that people who queued from 7.30 didn't get in all day.

I got there at about 5.50 both days and the first day got just grounds tickets and the second day I was somehow about 500 places in front in the queue and I got offered Court 1 or court 2 tickets and chose court 2.

My Friend went last year he was there around 09.00 and he got in around 17.00, he got to see the Querrey v Cilic match.

I agree, I love grass court tennis, it's my favourite kind...and they only have the 2 pre-Wimbledon weeks and then Wimbledon..only 250 tournaments as well. It would be nice to have a week or two more of grass court play, and at least 1 500 in there. Bad luck if grass is your main surface :o

I think there should be a masters on grass, there is one on every other surface. I think that's why a lot of clay specialists are overranked, to be honest. Unfortunately, I think it will never change.

Hopefully he can get an easy first round for once and you can see him!

If he is Unseeded @ Wimbledon, no Top Seed or any Seed would want to Draw Gasquet in the 1st Round! There are less better Grass Court Players then better Clay Court Players.

difference in travel distance is almost negligible after all. and, the draw in Rosmalen is rather weak.

Eastbourne Organisers are stupid. I hate that tournament, the wind is so frustrating and the organisers seem to forget that it is a WTA tournament first and an ATP one second. :rolleyes:

I would only want him to play Queens. If he looses in the 1st Round, it wouldn't be bad to play Eastbourne but he can't get in unless there are Withdrawls. Organizers are not giving him a Wild-Card.

I don't think Richard should play a week before Wimbledon. This is very different from RG since he probably will get to play at least couple matches at Queens and since he has played so many matches on clay, he really is match tough right now. His last week, he should just head out to Wimbledon grounds and practice. Unlike RG, he is a threat to go deep on grass and if he plays well, rested and confident, there are only two players I feel he would have little chance against and that is Federer and Nadal. Anyone else, I feel like he can beat. Being seeded is not that important at Wimbledon, and given his 07 and 08 results, he may actually get seeded.

At this point, he should concentrate on 500, 1000 and GS events mostly... he has plenty of points filled in 250 events, so even if he wants to enter a tournament right before GS, he should treat it as practice, win a match, tank and go to Wimbledon..

I've always got the feeling that he likes playing in England. He's really popular here (people love him and his game) and the English commentators are very complimentary the majority of the time apart from a few cliches that they trot out every now and again.

Sorry, I misunderstood your post, in the sense that he asked for one and it was not given to him.

I feel he is overdue for a week of rest, Gabriel will ensure that things won't get too cosy and also think about the summer where to play and when. And I am almost certain it will be DC for him again after Wimby.

Watching Richard play on grass is a unique experience, almost no one else plays the same way. Really looking forward to that. Clay season was very decent and gave hope, but this grass season, he should be able to perform to his true potential. It has been a while since Richard won a GS match.. almost a year and half.. and it has been 2 years since he reached second week. He is long overdue.

He's long overdue a decent GS draw as well. I wouldn't mind Davydenko in 1st or 2nd round to inherit his draw :angel:

Yeah he seems to dread Roland Garros :awww: I think he will have more confidence playing in a tournament that he went far in previously

I think a QF at least as long as he doesn't get a horrendous draw. I think grass court tournies like him though as knowing how to play with flair on grass is a dying art, so I'm hoping Queens and Wimbledon will be kind. He is also a crowd puller here 

depends on where Nadal and Murray are in that draw. He doesn't have to worry about Nalbandian now though :(

I think he will beat Nishikori, last time they played it was pretty straightforward and that was on hard courts! As for Monfils, I think he is injured, sooo it's not that bad I guess, it all depends on how he is feeling.

I also think Monfils is terrible on grass, so it's not the worst draw I don't think. Hopefully he can get through Nishikori, and then make a bit of a run.

Me too, but it's still rotten luck. Plus, I'd like to see more of Kei. Monfils doesn't bother me in any way, though. One of the better seeds to draw IMO

realistically , this is a pretty good draw . No one in that whole quarter - with the exception of Roddick - should be able to compete with Gasquet on grass. Nishikori just played his first match in months , and lost . Monfils is not too good on grass historically and is nursing some vague ailments still .Scheuttler ? - please . I totally prefer this draw to getting some monster server , like an Isner or a Karlovic , in the early rounds .And , we know that Richard can beat Roddick on grass - it has happened before .
But don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves. First he must focus and win over Nishikori - don't be complacent or things won't work out well.
At least he will not have to see Murray for the early part of the event .

I am looking forward to seeing him play on grass again - he has a wonderful grass court game , and this looks like he should be able to put together a few good wins - build some confidence .

Ironic how he was sharing a practise court with Nishikori the hour before the draw came out!

Well yes as Jen said, I was at Queens today watching Richie practise. I had perfect timing because I figured, "oh there will be a change of players at about 3pm" so I went down to the main practise courts and first saw Benneteau arriving. So I was focusing on him hitting for a couple of minutes and then suddenly realised that Richard was up the other end of the court and I hadn't noticed or seen him arrive at all! Then came the really silly part- I was so overwhelmed to see him back on grass that I got all choked up and almost felt like crying, so I sat down below the court level to compose myself. :lol: So many emotions just to see him back on grass you can't imagine, there was times last year I couldn't imagine seeing him at Queens again so soon.

Anyway, emotion aside, he hit for about an hour. They were just going through standard drills, groundstrokes, volleying, smashes and serve but of course when Richard is doing it, it is always more fun. He was there with just Markus and they were talking mostly in french (but I really struggle with Markus' French LOL). Anyway, it was a fairly laid-back session but he was definitely working hard! I have positive feelings from watching him practise.

For hair police, hair was looking amazing (you can see some pics at my Twitter http://twitter.com/pfboa). I have a lot more pics to come but you will all have to be patient with me uploading during the tournament.

Anyway, after the hour was done he thanked Julien for the practise and they chatted for a while, with Courteau and Markus. Then Julien left and Richard and Markus found a corner of the practise court and they spent about 30mins during footwork drills, running from side to side and getting into position for the ball. This was interesting to watch. One funny/cute moment was when Markus said "and now this one is a MP!" and that was when they ended the practise. :awww:

Then, of course I wanted to talk with Richard but I had so many things going round in my head that I wanted to say and I was also worrying about coming across as "crazy" fan instead of "caring" fan! :lol: So in the end I totally choked up and just wished him "bonne chance" and he smiled and said "Merci". If I see him again, I promise I'm going to say something more than that but today I was just too overwhelmed for so many reasons. Seeing him at RG was great but seeing him back on grass was just an indescribable feeling!

I might be there tomorrow yes and yes, probably until Friday (unless good things happen and he makes semis/final). This is my last summer as a student so I'm making the most of it! :lol:

They definitely keep them open later than when the matches finish but I wouldn't say "all day". Usually on a Sunday they finish at around 4-5pm. When I say finish, I mean telling people to leave.

I'm so glad it's only a 40 min journey for me but I did do a 7 hour round trip to go to Nottingham CH on Thursday!

I would have gone to Nottingham if I hadn't been on holiday. I might well go tomorrow then. I can deal with 4/5 pm.

Also Tursunov, Mahut and Dancevic are playing tomorrow so def not a wash out even if I don't see Richard.

Nooo, no queuing involved, just turn up and you can get in fine. Hope you can make it. Qualies line-up is nice indeed.

I had so many things going round in my head that I wanted to say and I was also worrying about coming across as "crazy" fan instead of "caring" fan! :lol: So in the end I totally choked up and just wished him "bonne chance" and he smiled and said "Merci". If I see him again, I promise I'm going to say something more than that but today I was just too overwhelmed for so many reasons. Seeing him at RG was great but seeing him back on grass was just an indescribable feeling!

Richard's serve also looked impressive today, when he was really hitting through it, it was making a wonderful 'pop' sound. I always think it's a good sign when his serve looks good, which is why I'm noting it, so now I'm really excited for this tournament to start.

Eyes are more green than brown but a mixture of both, I think.
I think he is about 6ft, 6ft 1 isn't that unrealistic an estimate though.

I maintain the eyes are hazel ( a mix of green and brown that changes depending on what he wears ) and his height is closer to 6 feet than anything above that .

Don't know about the rest of you, but I am really happy that Rafa won RG again. He's been through so much with injuries and family problems, it was nice to see him win again. I'll always remember how he supported Richard last year.

I only came home at the start of the second set, my feelings: good signs, but still some adaptation needed for grass.

gasquet does look a little clumsy.that should end with some more grass time.

Just saw from 3-0 in the second. Was pleased to see he was up pretty easily but then played a shaky service game at 4-2 with the aid of a few good shots from Kei. However RIchard held his nerve and saved a few break points with smart, aggresive play to hold and then serve out. (Nice to say and see THAT).

He still needs to get his feel and movement on grass but he had already adapted the grass position on his service return. Amazing how much more aggressive his position is on grass.

Nice win, good to see him on grass again! I think everyone will have a little trouble adjusting to the green stuff. I was most impressed that he was able to save all those break points.

Hard to tell how well Roddick played, his opponent really didn't have much. One match does not make scary good form, at least not yet.

Also hard to tell how well Schuettler played cuz Monfils just didn't have much of a clue about playing on grass. Schuettler is a nice grass player but Richie is nicer...

I haven't yet posted during the tournament but I have followed his two last matches and even watched the last few games of the Nishikori match. He is looking great :) Too bad he possibly has to play Andy Roddick the round after next. I can't decide who I want to win more. I already said I'd never pull against Andy again after their Brisbane match but they BOTH need to do really well here. :sobbing:

OK sorry I have a little bit of a "report" of the match from today but since I'm tired it will probably be not so useful. If you have anything specific you want to know about the match, feel free to ask questions of course. :p

Well as I said it started out very serve dominated until 3-2. Then of course Richie broke, Ram did DF to hand him the BP but it was a gorgeous BH return off Ram's 1st serve where he stepped up the court to hit it (that was the BP winner). Next service game was full of BH winners (1 crosscourt I think) and also the dropshot I mentioned previously. At this point he was being very aggressive and he closed out the set fairly comfortably.
For a lot of the 2nd set he wasn't get much joy on the return as Ram was really serving well, wasn't so much Richard returning badly, although he did tend to "let games go" a little on Ram's serve when he lead 40-0. But this was ok, as he was holding fairly comfortably most of the time (I remember a loose service game but he wasn't really in danger of being broken- it was more a case of his own errors then). They exchanged in a lot of BH to BH rallys particularly in this set. I don't know what Ram was thinking hitting to the BH because it was great today and the FH had been loose on a couple of big points. Generally though on the occasions that the FH was on display (really not so often, thanks Ram!) he was hitting it quite deep and being aggressive with it and he did hit a really nice FH winner DTL in this set.
Anyway, after what seemed like a million ace full service games from Ram (:lol:), at 5-5 Richie's patience was finally rewarded and he took a few good slices on the return and managed to get the break. Good news is it was nice aggressive play that won him the break (and I think the FH I mentioned was in this game). Then of course, there was no looking back and he served it out.

Movement looked decent but then it seems like he makes the transistion really well to this surface. I haven't seen the Nishikori match yet so I can't compare but his form today was definitely good, bar the returning "problems" but he was going about it the right way and Ram did serve well.

I took a few "action" pics too, will post them when I can (and still have Monfils practise to come). Ooh something I forgot to mention about that was the cute moment when they were playing the practise set and Markus was standing behind him actively encouraging to the point of cheerleader- yes, I saw him go "Allez" and make a c'mon fist! I have a picture of this to come. I really like the relationship with Markus, looks promising. Oh and also I think that French TV were filming some of this practise, maybe for the 'Mousquetaires' documentary.

WIth only four singles matches scheduled for Center Court and the four top seeds left in the tourney I didn't think he had a chance of being on the TV Court but I suspect the Gasquet- Schuttler match will be a MUCH better grass court match than any of the scheduled Center court matches. Well guess we'll just have to wait till the quarters to SEE him play again.

Everytime I think about the fact that we basically can see Richie perform his grass court magic for at most 3 tournamnets a year I get :mad::mad:

No, I haven't had a chance to talk to him again since I haven't seen any of his practises since Sunday. It has become harder to watch practise since the weather has been bad, the practise sessions have been very random in timing. When I went on Tuesday the practise courts were covered until nearly 2pm because of the rain problems. I hope I do get another chance to speak to him but maybe if not at Queens, I will at Wimbledon.

His body language during the match was good I felt, particularly in the 2nd set. Ram was bombing down the aces and big serves but I felt for the most part he wasn't getting discouraged and he looked pretty patient and waited for his chances well, which he then got at 5-5 and duly took with aggressive play. He was also pumping himself up on quite a few occasions for a match that lasted less than an hour, there were fistpumps when he played the great game to break in the 1st set and also a lot of positive fistpumps and body language at the end of the 2nd set.

I'm sorry for you all but delighted since I bought a Court 1 ticket in advance and I got all the better matches to watch. I shall cheer him on for everyone here, of course (weather permitting since I have to leave early tomorrow so hope not too much rain!).

If you are cheering him on for me, make sure you yell abuse at him if he stops concentrating. ;) It needs to be an accurate representation of how I cheer him at home ;)

I would love to see Llodra on grass as well.

I suspect the Gasquet- Schuttler match will be a MUCH better grass court match than any of the scheduled Center court matches. :)
This is maybe an exaggeration, but all decent volleyers (Lopez, Llodra and Richard) are on court 1. :rolleyes: With this kind ov TV coverage people will forget how a proper volley is played.


He was also pumping himself up on quite a few occasions for a match that lasted less than an hour, there were fistpumps when he played the great game to break in the 1st set and also a lot of positive fistpumps and body language at the end of the 2nd set.

Oh no!!! I was really hoping he would go far at Queens. I just hope it is a precaution and it's not that bad. Better to rest up some for Wimbledon instead of making it worse. Only he knows how bad he feels.

Can his luck get any worse! With Roddick out, he had a great chance. He was proabably just getting his feel on grass after 2 matches - that's not really enough to get him ready for Wimbledon.
