Monfils quits from Estoril

Hi.

After Ljubicic quits, now Monfils... What a "comedy". Now the only possible seeded player for Federer to meet in the final is... G. Garcia Lopez. I guess the greatest "test" for him will be A. Montanes in the semis... And as I say this, I should point that I am a big Fed fan! But I would like him to have at least serious competition, because basically he may end up winning a tournament when he was the only one in the top 30 participating...

Here is the original portuguese news: http://www.record.xl.pt/noticia.aspx?id=93509006-2166-4134-819f-0245c9ee642c&idCanal=00001744-0000-0000-0000-000000001744&h=7

And a "loose" translation:

Monfils quits with stomach problems
The french says his night was difficult

Gael Monfil choose to quit this thursday from Estoril Open. The french tennis player has been in this morning in the press room claiming to have been to a rough night and, because of that, we was not in condition to play today against Alberto Martin, as it was scheduled.

"I spent all night without sleeping, feeling bad and with headaches. I vomited three or four times, and in total I must have slept about one hour", said the player, still shaken, referring that he was sorry for not being able to continue. "I was even playing well and could have made a good tourney. Now, I do not know if I will go to Madrid."

(...)

Monfils will be replaced in the draw by David Marrero, a lucky looser from the qualification.

What do they put in the food in Portugal? Nice for the local players who can all be lucky losers now.

For the sake of correctness, and defending my country (:)), I should point out two things:

- Ivan Ljubicic announced he was pulling out with a left side strain, sustained at Rome last week. Is was not food.

- The two lucky losers replacing Ljujicic and Monfils are not portuguese. They are respectively Michal Przysiezny (Poland) and David Marrero (Spain).

it realy is a joke that this tournament has the same amount of ranking points as Queens

Estoril is a tourney with good tradition. Look at former winners: Federer, Djokovic, Nalbandian, Gaudio, Davydenko, J. Carlos Ferrero, Moya, Muster, etc. There are many ATP250 tourneys with much smaller history and tradition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estoril_Open

What is a pitty is this year's names quitting after committing to the tourney. And it is also a pity what has been done by ATP in terms of making all ATP 250 tourneys smaller than they should be.

Regarding Queens, the problem is why it is only 250 and not 500. And being of of the only two grass ATP tourneys 2 weeks before Wimbledon, it is easy to attract good players. In my opinion, Halle and Queens should be ATP500. And Eastbourne and Hertogenbosch could remain 250 and 1 week before Wimbledon (I would prefer a longer grass season, but that is another - and longer - story).

Estoril this year suffers from poor positioning in between two Masters tournaments.

16 Portuguese in the qualies, not a single one qualified directly, and one enters the main tournament as 3rd LL. I'm still wondering what they put in the food in Portugal.

Good opportunities now for a guy like Giraldo to make the final, or possibly Gil in his home tournament or GGL. Too bad though that the tournament is basically left with only Roger as any type of name for the event. But tennis isn't all about the big names, so the tournament isn't terrible just because of one year of unfortunate circumstances or lack of star power.

Yeah, I had a feeling that this lose to Del Bonis won't be Przysiezny's last match in this tournament ;) Straight to 2nd round. He's playing Martin ? Good chance for QF :)

He's playing Machado.

He doesn't actually win any second round points, he has to win to get any points.

DelBo lost to Martin in the first round.

I can see Roger losing in the SF to Montanes/Cuevas if he doesn't pull it together, and by that I mean if he plays like he did yesterday.

It makes total sense. He didn't play last year so it's an easy way to get 250 points in clay season. And it gives him a chance to try out different approaches to hone his clay court game playing third tier players. Why not? He's always been clever at scheduling and pacing himself. Why should this time be any different? :tennis:

You think so? The only year Fed used Estoril "to hone his clay court game playing third tier players" he got his worst beating at FO.

yeah, like it happened at the AO, he entered and won that one just because he knew everyone would lose or withdraw...

Roger didn't play MC and got a really crappy result in Rome, so why not playing this?

the 2008 situation was different, he was really desperate for a title that year, now he already got a Slam, so this is more for easy points and practise

Didn't Roger schedule Estoril before the start of the season that year (as he did this year)?

It's not like he decided to play there just to win a title, imo.

He only had a stomach problem, as far as i know.

Word on the street is that Federer hired some thugs to poison Monfils' meals. It worked.

yes, but it's not like Roger hasn't withdrawn from enough smaller tournaments if he feels he doesn't need them ;)

People bitch that he doesn't care about MS.

Interesting comparison. Nadal's draw in Rome included Federer himself as well as Soderling, Wawrinka and the same Djokovic/Verdasco et al. Then there was Djokovic/Verdasco/Ferrero/Ferrer etc in MC. So basically all the best clay courters were active in both tournaments with few exceptions and no other more competitive tournament was scheduled.

Then there is the fact that there are 2 tournaments going on right now with much harder draws than Estoril (even had the only 2 higher ranked players not withdrawn from Estoril this would hold).

yes, but it's not like Roger hasn't withdrawn from enough smaller tournaments if he feels he doesn't need them ;)

Just a few days ago Federer referred to that subject saying that he's not the type of player who schedules many tournaments and then skips them if he's feeling tired or injured or whatnot. And to be fair, he usually respects that. Unlike others, he doesn't schedule many tournaments but committs to the ones he did schedule from the very beggining.

That said, Roger hasn't been the type of player who schedules small tournaments, unless you consider MS to be small... Maybe for Federer :).

If it gave more points, Federer wouldn't be the only bloke in the top 30 and most likely wouldn't win the event...
