First clay court win of the season for Federer . He still looks very rusty . It must improve many things if he wants to do something bigger on RG

I'm totally embarrassed by my guy Bjorn. He made around 50 errors. Guess I see why he has been struggling so much lately. Roger played well when he wanted to, and he didn't have to much. Not a good match.

Ugly win.

And yet, a win.

It will get better (it just has to!)

The stats from that match must be appalling. Error after error. Federror was clearly outmugged by Phau though. Federror brought his D game and yet it was never in doubt.

Typical tank to avoid Clement.
Federer gets smashed in quarters by Frenchman.

Yeh, I thought so.

it seems that he played worse than against Gulbis.

Anyway when he had said in the beginning of the tournament that he plays better in the end, I think it meant something ;)

Especially I was impressed how :

- he went to 0-40 when serving for first set
- lost many breakpoints
- went to deuce on final game whereas he had lost so few points on his serve before

how did he play those points ?

Especially to go to 0-40 in the final game of first set, I wondered if he didn't do it on purpose for a test (he then won 5 next points  )

Arnie, you like? I've always called him that, I saw someone say that a few years ago and it stuck with me. I think it's cute

Seriously though, Arnaud played well today vs. Falla and is consistent and counter punches well. If Roger doesn't bring more to the table that match could get interesting.

yes, and also Clement has the mental abilities for such a match.

it's tougher, and the semi may be even tougher (Montanes or Cuevas)

I didn't watch match against Gulbis but this match today was awful . Almost every UE was miss hit . BH is even worse then awful , spin BH doesn't exist in Roger's game at the moment , timing on the shot is really bad , movement is rusty , only the serve is decent , all other can't be much worse then it is . It's really sad to watch Roger playing like that . I am really hoping that he will do something

Bad nickname? Ok, Arnaud it is then ;)

And this tournament in general comes down to how much Roger wants to win it. The result is completely up to him. As you say, Clement is the type to get up for matches like this and won't get nervous, and then Montanes and Cuevas are real clay court players. So we'll see how Roger plays on Friday, if he actually is here to win this event.

He is right, because it's impossible to play worse than this. I mean, Phau is ranked #138!! for God sake.

It was not this bad vs. Gulbis, but then again, Gulbis was making a lot of errors like Phau in the first set of their match. He just got better, and Roger stayed and declined throughout the match. Roger was at like maybe a C level vs. Gulbis. Today was an D-.

Then again, it is his first match of the week playing someone playing terribly without any pressure, a major crowd, and only his second match on clay this year. Really can't expect much from Roger at this point in this tournament.

yes it's definitely worse than against Gulbis : in the match in Roma, he even hit some powerful backhand winners down the line ;)

made errors, but not so many on the spin backhand

That doesn't count as winning ugly. Federer went for his shots and made a million errors. Winning ugly is about grinding out victories. Federer did anything but grind today.

He seems to agree..

"Today I played to win, I didn't try to make it look nice or anything, it was about being tough and focused, and coming through, trying to win matches," Federer told a news conference. "I played well and its important that I play the right tennis right now. It wasn't always beautiful, but it doesn't matter," he added.

If he means it, I hope he can get back to normal soon enough. Too many errors for my liking :S

:o :D

for me it's the opposite : same sequence as in Miami

dynamic and plays OK for a first match but loses (Indian Wells-Roma), and then says "I will practice a lot before next tournament"

... then plays shit in the next one (he already played shit against Lapentti and Serra before Berdych in Miami)

Maybe he can't suffer practicing anymore
