6-4, it could have been much easier though, he got an early break and wasted a couple of BP at 3-1. Then he started to make more UE, but it was enough to keep his lead.
I'm a little nervous because Brands just made a Challenger final on clay - losing to Brands would be a big no-no!

I just came across this video interview he gave during the promo thing before the Munich event, it's in German, but it makes me smile because they insistently remind him of the bagel against Cilic last year:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FXIlYeOBcs
He says it was bitter indeed, but that's what he deserved for his performance. Is he particularly eager to play Cilic again so he can make up for it? He answers he already did in a way because he beat Cilic in a 3rd set TB in Madrid the week after the Munich disaster. And he rather hopes not to play Cilic at all because he's so tough to play.
Very strong field this year in Munich with Cilic, Berdych, Youzhny, Baggy - he has already lost to all of them. The good thing is that he has also beaten all of them at least once, so he knows he can do it. (He actually has a decent record against them, apart from Berdych.)
He also says the transition from harcourt to clay is getting easier and easier for him. It used to be a real problem, he needed at least two weeks to feel well on clay, but he deals much better with this kind of things with the passing years.

He called the physio for his back. :-/

His serve looks OK, though, 3-3.

5-3*, the medical time-out worked wonders, he's playing better and more aggressive.

I turned the livestream on just in time to see the handshake :p

Nice to see he got the win though :bigclap: Hopefully the back thing is nothing serious...

That's good! I seem to remember him saying he also likes to take a day or so to settle into a new city for a tournament. Takes him a bit to get acclimated I guess!

The back must be OK, he's playing doubles atm.

Ventura next, he actually has a losing record against him, but that was ages ago (2004).

tennislive.tv usually has the matches on demand, but nothing yet this year...
They lost in doubles, but they did better than I was expecting (10-8 in the third set). It's obvious he was focussing on singles anyway, playing with Krawietz. He says in the new column on his website that he knows him from the TennisBase where they both train in Munich and that it's important to help the youngsters too.

http://www.bmwopen.de/news/news-detail/datum/2010/05/05/interview-philipp-kohlschreiber/index.html
He says his match was OK. He was a bit tense, always special to play against a friend.
Ventura next, he has a big backhand and plays clever, with a lot of dropshots.
The conditions are not ideal for Kohli, his topspin works better on a dry court, it was a problem for him during the rallies. He also uses natural gut strings and it's particularly difficult to adjust to rainy conditions then. On the other hand, the wet court was making it easier to return Brands' serve.

He's been feeling a little pain in the back since last week and wanted to be sure everything is fine, but it doesn't hamper him during the game.

up a break early in the 2nd at 3-0

still serving really well to

it looks like he maybe wants to end things as fast as possible since it could start raining again

sighs..

holds off the break point then has ace # 8 for set point and holds..that was scary

His interview:
http://www.bmwopen.de/news/interviews/interviews-detail/datum/2010/05/06/interview-philipp-kohlschreiber-1/index.html
He isn't working with Eriksson anymore?! I had missed that, I was wondering why Eriksson wasn't mentioned on the new website indeed.
They ask him about his coach change and he answers that Eriksson wanted to be available for all the players of the TennisBase in Oberhaching. So he's working with Geserer, his manager and former coach, at the moment - just in the interim, but he could imagine working with him again in the long term too.

The long wait before the match didn't disturb him because they were well-informed and knew when they were expected to play. He played poker with other players to kill the time.
A good match, he took a great start and was having a good day at the office.
Ventura played exactly like he was expecting, even if their last match was years ago. A lot of dropshots, but he was moving well and able to dictate the points.
As for the next round, he says that Baggy prefers fast surfaces, but is looking very motivated this year after his "off time".

i really thought he could win this tournament and this match especially but now he comes across a marcos who can suddenly play on clay?

small chance here at 0-30 1-2 in the 2nd set but he needs to take it

2 break points!! take them for god sake!

yay!! now hold you bastard

misty1

what a great time for aces # 2 and 3!

kohli leads 3-2 in the 2nd

misty1

and now after marcios holds to 15 philipp faces 2 more break points:mad:

and gets broken, he trails 3-4 in the 2nd

Ad Wim
05-07-2010, 02:58 PM
This is why he keeps hanging around 25 and is not breaking into top 15. He has so much trouble to string 3 or more decent matches together and he has so little kampfgeist for a German...

misty1

I saw it only in patches and Baggy played well when I was watching, it's not like he lost to a poor player – but way too many errors from Philipp, obviously.he has so little kampfgeist for a German...To me he looked like he was fighting, but his game wasn't working today.
He must be gutted, but it would still have been a long way to win the title.

He says he couldn't deal with Baggy's incredibly flat shots. The ball was really just skimming over the net and then hardly bouncing, Baggy did a good job to make things difficult for him, also varying a lot the length of his shots.
He's very disappointed, as always when he loses on clay which is his favourite surface, it particularly hurts in Munich, and he isn't hiding that he was giving himself a good chance to make it to the SF since he had never lost to Baggy on clay.
And then he's asked about the stories with Petzsche with the German Tennis Association, Kohli says that he for himself wanted to have him on the team in Düsseldorf, but it's not up to him to make the decisions in the end.

Truc

His draw in Madrid:

Isner - Qualifier
Kohlschreiber - Qualifier
Qualifier - Seppi
Bye - Nadal

misty1
05-08-2010, 02:55 PM
are you *** kidding me?

isner in the 2nd round? and then if he gets past that nadal?

well atleast if he makes it that far he'll only have to worry about nadal 1 round later and he'll get a bit more points.

_Chaz
05-09-2010, 05:42 PM
Kohli has to play Giraldo in 1st round :( I think with Chela heīs the best qualifier and not so easy to beat on clay. Guys like C Rochus, Anderson or Dolgopolov would have been much easier. But he should make the 1/8 final. Isner isnīt that good on clay and has played final in Belgrade so maybe heīs tired. But why does he always have to play Nadal in 2nd or 3rd round? So unlucky... And he has 90 points to defend (=1/8 final) so he wonīt add some points to his ranking.

Truc

At least he plays on a TV court tomorrow, strangely enough (4th match of the day).

He plays in doubles with the other Philipp.

3-0 lead for philipp

philipp takes first set 6-1 over giraldo in 24 minutes and allowed only 2 points on return!

where was this philipp a couple of days ago against baghdatis?

looks like giraldo woke up and philipp may be in for more if a fight this set. Giraldo has held to 40-15 on both of his serves

misty1
05-10-2010, 04:00 PM
break point giraldo who's already up 3-2 in the 2nd set

unbelievable first break point philipp faces all game and he gives it away

he trails 2-4 in the second set

misty1
05-10-2010, 04:09 PM
philipp loses the 2nd set 2-6

whats concering is that he has been broken pretty much at will by giraldo 2/3 times and where giraldo got only 2 points on return every time in the 1st set philipp got only 3 in the 2nd.

giraldo has woken up and unless kohli can kope with it im afarid it'll be gsm giraldo:sad:

giraldo serves and holds 40-0 to open the 3rd set and kohli taken to deuce

giraldo fights off the match point kohli had and now has break point as philipp serves a double fault!

but he saves it

game point kohli..giraldo fights it off again

3rd game point kohli and this time he wins it

giraldo holds after kohli gets to deuce

now kohli and giraldo at 30-30 with philipp down 1-2

break point giraldo!! but kohli saves it

another break point but kohli saves it to

adv. kohli but giraldo fights it off

2nd game point kohli and he wins it, tied 2-2 in the 3rd

his confidence cant be very high at the moment and im afarid he will be easy pickings in the first round for someone. tThen he'll drop out of the top 40.

I didn't watch it, but the articles sound like it was a truly awful display from him and he's looking completely lost out there. Weird how he can totally lose the thread in the middle of the clay season after a very decent start...
Are the WDR videos working outside of Germany, btw?

like i said i hope something happens to get his confidence back soon or he'll be out in the first round of roland garros.

maybe the doubles win, if he can win that will help a bit

the scoreline is 3-6, 4-1 right now

well..philipp lost the doubles match 3-6, 6-3, 5-10

thats his 4th loss in a row now

At least his interviews crack me up. He says his shots are so slow atm that he's able to read what is written on the ball after hitting it. It started about 10 days ago, he's physically perfectly fine, but he has absolutely no energy on the court and his game is a complete mess. He has no explanation for it. He's been reading a lot about sports psychology, he sounds very perplexed by what is going on with him. He says it's quite scary. And he admits it's not easy for other people to help him since he's such "a loudmouth" at times.

Like always, he's honest (sometimes too much).

I really wish he would get back on track like the beginning of 2008, when he won auckland and blasted Roddick out of the AO. He's not getting any younger and with his talent, he really should amass more than just 2 singles trophies. :o

He still seems very nervous, he was in a rage when he got broken at 1-0 in the 2nd set and smashed his racquet like crazy, I had never seen him like that. At that point of the match, in a dead rubber, it was weird, to say the least...
But his game was looking better, judging by the few bits I saw.

They had a really bad loss yesterday in doubles, which I didn't see, but Kas says that he was plain awful, so it wasn't just Kohli's fault.

misty1
05-20-2010, 01:30 PM
