what this has to do with Rafa's 17th shield

exactly.

17 shields is an amazing achievment no matter how you look at it. the fact that most of these shileds are on clay make it even more exceptional.

there have been some really incredible tennis legends in the past who cant even boast 2 shields on clay. just goes to show how tough it is to win these important events on clay.

the mighty becker--for instance-- was not able to single clay event of any kind when he was playing. he had to actually wait and start taking part on the seniors tour before he finally won a clay event.

that is plain horse shit and you know it old sport. surely you can do better.

masters events are very critical indicators--on the average--for those who will go on to dominate the majors.

has anybody won more of these shields than fed and the clay warrior in the last 6 years or so?

and who has just about all the slams in the last 6 years or so?

defense rests.

If half of those Masters wins was on hard it would be more impressive. Dominating on clay proves that players in this era need to improve on other surfaces other than hard courts.

not really. i think the sport has become far more demanding than it has ever been at any time in the past.

it significantly more demanding even from 5 years ago, let alone from 20 years ago.

accordingly, this is a significant achievement that is not likely to be equalled again. and clay warrior will probably end with about 25-27 shields before its all said and done.

fed too is likely to add to his 17 over the course of next 2-3 years.

now that is a record for the ages. you are looking at recored that will never be broken.

the sport is become more demanding with each passing year.

Do you really think all of tennis history is nothing but a comparison with Federer? Hell, if we were discussing Borg, or Lendl, or Connors, would you also consider it relevant to bring Fed into the conversation? If Agassi or McEnroe were playing today, do you think their huge results would be anyhow downgraded by the fact they played in the age of Federer? Well, it just so happens, whether you like it or not (you obviously don't), that the present age is not only about your personal god, Rafa is also around and is (this really creeps you, I know) writing a career that is more and more comparable to the players I have mentioned. And he is only 23. Agassi, by the way, won his 17th shield at age 34.

But I guess it is useless, if we were discussing Agassi, you'd say '16-8', if we were discussing Borg, you'd say '16-11', and so on. For you, tennis is synonymous with RF. How sad, the history of the sport is far greater, you are missing most of the fun.

Amazing achievement.

The big question now is, can Nadal finally be the first player to win 3 Masters in a row? It's quite odd that in over 20 years still noone has accomplished this, while 2 in a row has been done on 23 occasions by 15 different players already. Nadal himself 6 times already, so it would be fitting and deserved if he breaks the trend an wins a 3rd in Madrid.

Most consecutive Wins

1 Thomas Muster 2 (MC 1996 - RO 1996)
2 Andre Agassi 2 (CA 1995 - CI 1995)
3 Andre Agassi (2) 2 (IW 2001 - MI 2001)
4 Jim Courier 2 (IW 1991 - MI 1991)

8 Andrei Medvedev 2 (MC 1994 - MA 1994)
9 Marcelo Rios 2 (IW 1998 - MI 1998)
10 Gustavo Kuerten 2 (MC 1999 - RO 1999)

I've tried to make the same point sooooooo many times. It's useless, some people are beyond the reach of common sense. If we talked about Fred Perry, they'd barge in with "16-8, end of story". They simply can't live without comparing everything to Fed. Bet they ask their wives, "honey, was I as good as Fed, was I?"... trouble is they probably want her to answer "no, not quite".

Hahaha, you are exactly right, and it isn't just Federer fans, but really more specific posters in general. Not everything is always about their favorite player, but they just can't stop themselves from making a debate or an issue out of nothing, and holding negative feelings towards a player who is simply doing their job. People who live their lives that vicariously through someone they have never even met the way some on here do are really............like you said, beyond the reach of common sense.

to put this deal in perspective, it took agassi 13 years or so to win his 17 shields.

clay warrior did it in about 5 years and under much more demanding conditions. the game is significantly more demanding now and getting more demanding with each passing year.

Pretty sad that people have to come on here and bring up Federer when he has nothing to do with these amazing accomplishments by Nadal. It's like you can't have your man being shown up or something. Really petty and pathetic. Fed and Rafa don't have any silly rivalry, and their fans shouldn't either. Instead of bringing the man down, why don't you celebrate the greatness that we are seeing today.

Well said. This is not about Federer for once. Achieving 17 masters shields by the age of 23 is an incredible acnievement. Trying to diminish that is indeed small-minded.

Agassi, Nadal >> Sampras, Federer in these events

but we all know they were beggars to them when it comes to GS's

In fact, it took him 15 seasons to win 17 MS. From Miami 1990 to Cincinnati 2004. ;)

Rafa has done it in only 6 (2005-2010)... and counting.

The haters who belittles Nadal's achievements on MS' are truly pathetic. :cuckoo:

A record for the ages.

Impressive achievement though.

one of the so called 'records' on clay that Rafa is tied with is
-Most consecutive French Open finals in the Open Era: 4 (tied with Borg, Lendl and Federer)

hopefully Fed can break this record by making the Finals again this year at RG.
