:haha: What has done this playboy to have so many fangirls? Also, his attitude on court is even more disgusting than the one displayed by Djokovic at his same age with the difference that the serb was world #3 at his age and had won a slam. The legacy of this cocky kid will have -1000 impact on the history of the sport. If he even reaches top 20 he could well retire. Even Almugro and Granollers will be more remembered: at least them have won a Davis Cup.

He has the game, and he doesn't seem injury prone like some other top guys. And he's young, and seems to be over the "headcase thing."

I'd say #1 is a little strong, but top 5 in a few years isn't unthinkable. Like once Fed and Roddick age out of the sport.

There's a reason why there's been so much hype about him over the years. It's bc he's a really good player.

I hope so! And to those idiots who are saying how he needs to be a bit more mentally capable, well you obviously haven't watched him this clay season. He makes silly mistakes but he didn't beat Roger Federer by doing nothing. Stop making excuses for the people he beat too, Roger Federer is still the no. 1 player and Ernests beat him thats the main point. If he stops the unforced error count i think he has a big chance, i hope he is seeded for RG and Wimbledon for the first time.

I don't have any jealousy of his multimillonaire father and his private jet. I just don't like how he interacts with the ball boys/girls, for example. Also, I don't like when he asks the umpire about a mark even when it's pretty clear the ball went in/out (in the match against Bolandri he did it many times, soooo many) and last but not least I just don't think he is humble enough to realize he means absolutely nothing in the tour right now and that's why he acts with such an star pose which he hasn't earned so far, so for me that shows he is quite arrogant. For me the arrogance appears when you do something you shouldn't be doing according to the achievements you've earned, and Gulbis' achievements are zero, so he should be more focused, more humble, practice a lot more and definitely not say something like "I don't like to practice and if I ever win a slam I will happily retire".

But hey, just my opinion. One thing is clear: never before so little effort has produced so many fans.

WTF how has he acheived ZERO, as you say. Umm he beat Roger Federer (supposedly the GOAT), made the semi finals of a Masters 1000 event (first time in his career), Took a set off nadal on clay which has never been done in the last two years of the tournament and this year alone, lept from 90 to 40 in 2 months and also Made the quarters of RG in 08. How the frick is that no achievement. That is massive for a 21 year old who last year didnt have his head screwed on right. Also, how is he not polite to the ball girls/boys?? They are allowed to just check for notification that the ball is out/in too on Clay.

Gulbis is joking with journalists a lot...they love it, as they said.
"I don't like to practice..." is just a part of the sentence, because he went on to say that now he is taking it more seriously since he has a good coach.
I practiced hard the last 3 weeks, and I could see the results on clay.
With his new coach, since last october, he reached 4 QF, 2 semis, and his first title...
He must do a good job on his mental attitude...his talent should prevailed.
Not bad from 101 ranking to maybe 34 next week...
Work in progress..

Number 1??? No, and its way too soon. Murray, Del Potro and Djokovic haven't even been able to pull that off yet. Isn't Nadal '86 born? Or did you mean 88/89? SInce Del Po and Cilic are younger....

Poor Ernst - he has the personality, the looks, the charisma, the backstory -all the things the ATP would want in a top player - just does not deliver on court sadly. Remember him at Wimby vs Nadal in 2008 - looked like he had just so much potential. 4 years on and nothing has come of it...

I had just seen that result so was laughing upon finding this thread on the first page. I remember Fucsovics (fun name to say) from a juniors major final but there was nothing on the ATP site (from Wikipedia: he won the junior Wimbledon title in 2010). Still, losing a five-setter to a player in the 500s who is way off the radar makes me think Gulbis will be in Challengers shortly.

Gulbis' peak level is very very high, certainly top 10. Problem is he only plays that level a couple of times per year and usually not in consecutive matches... or sets. He'll be 25 this year so we can't really blame immaturity for his inconsistency. His career is full of shocking losses and dreadful performances, but he's also beaten Fed and won two titles completely on his own merits.

It's really strange with Gulbis.

He clearly is the best player in Heilbronn this week, at least his peak tennis, but we all know that he won't win this challenger.

He said it himself, he has motivation problems sometimes.

Wimbledon 2012 perfectly matched it up:
He won against Berdych, played stunning tennis throughout.
But then he clearly did not play the same tennis in the next round on a outside court against a non-seeded opponent called J.J.

And US Open wasn't a huge difference.
He won against Haas in Round two and then lost to Johnson!

it's funny because obviously he is way too much of a headcase with a melted brain in the heat half the time to come even close, BUT Gulbis at his best is one of the best players you'll ever see

he can play lights out. beautiful aggressive tennis. unfortunately he indeed is nuts and rarely rarely rarely is focused in positive ways

it is sad

maybe he'll sort things out, but I doubt it. such raw talent but such impatience and frustration noticably arrising when he plays

Gulbis never had a chance to ever get #1. The top 4 and most other players around the top 10 are just too good for him.

Gulbis playing his best can beat any of them and has beaten a few of them before. if he weren't so weak mentally he could do great things

it's a shame

It's not just his mental game, it's his actual tennis game, it's so high risk that it's not going to work all the time, Chardy is the new Gulbis.

To put it simply - at his best Gulbis is easily better than the likes of Nadull, Fakervic and etc. Just like Rosol, SoderKing, Berdych and other high risk bashers. If he somehow manages to redline his game for the whole two weeks of the duration of the slam, who is stopping him? Exactly

Don't tell me that beating a mediocre player like Querrey makes him a potential #1 again.

I bumped it after he beat Bachinger in a challenger and you didn't say a word. Why the hate for Querrey?

Calling him mediocre is not hate. I don't hate any player.

Yes Rosol can be a future world number one too because he gave Nadal a thrashing in Wimbledon.

Lol seriously, one of the most overrated player ever in the history of tennis.

It a toss-up between him and Gasquet really.

Would be awesome if Gulbis got into top 10 at least just so we could hear his interviews more often.

Considering how much attention he gets, he's more like a former number one.

I can see Gulbis winning a Masters 1000 tournament one day (or reach a final like Janowicz) but I can't see him in the Top 10 in any time soon.

He's not a ranking player who can show up every single week at least two or three good matches.

Gulbis is the #1 in his own mind and that's all that matters.

If Gulbis wins IW, only then are we allowed to answer this question with "yes". Until this happens, the answer remains "no".

It a toss-up between him and Gasquet really.

Richard is top 10 with 9 titles and he is only 2 years older than Gulbis. Anti-Gasquet feeling in full power among the MTF ranks, as usual.

No, but he might be a top 10 some day

Mugbis will never crack the top 20, much less become number 1. He's a clown, end of discussion.

Worst prediction of my life :o

No chance at all! He will never break into the top 20 let alone world number 1!:nerner:
