Gulbis thanks to Gumy hasn't been a mental midget like used to be before they began to work together :worship: Love an ace at setpoint down

Lopez should be glad to have had that free time from the last retirement; he had time to do some sightseeing before he got his butt handed to him by Ernie.

I like Nadal, but I'm hoping Gulbis will give him a run for his money.

It's always good to see a player who managed to beat one of my favs make it far into a tournament. Good for tennis, too. Congrats, Gulbis, some very nice tennis there. :hatoff:

Great job by Gulbis, feel bad for Lopez but this is clay and he got outplayed, he had his chances in the first set but choked. Anyways I do not see Gulbis giving Nadal too much trouble, Wawrinka was at least five times better. Gulbis will win three games max.

Anyways Gulbis has a really bright future.

Feli! Good run tough with all the dram on his personal life!
Gulbis! :bigclap: Glad that he made SF after taking Federer out. He reminds so much Marat, like a younger version. The way he plays, hitting hard in the ball, no thinking to much in sending the balls way over the line, Powerful service, and the hairrrrr... Totally Marat style!
Let's see tomorrow how he does, Rafa will have some trouble if Gulbis keep his service on 80% at least.
Looking forward for tomorrow, great matches to come!

nice to see Ernests keep up his good form since winning Del Ray Beach earlier this year :yeah: sometimes all a player needs is that 1st title and then the train gets going  :p

When he's on his game, Gulbis is top player material

hehe, keep dreaming...Gulbis plays Nadull very well actually, and spaniard never faced this improved more consistent version of latvian before. If Gulbis serves well and hits his shots a match could very well go the wire

Nadal hates playing Gulbis. Gulbis has always taken a set off Nadal when they played.

Nadal will beat Erno easily but in theory Gulbis is a tough matchup for Rafa

Big hitting from both wings, big serve and strong groundstrokes to hit through him.

So proud of ernests! :hearts:

He will likely be too tired to give rafa much of a fight but still what a tournament for him.. :worship:

What Ernests must work on is his foot work.
Lesson to take from Nadal...
And a bit more strategy ahead...
His serves are good and offer variety.
He gained maturity and it pays off.
He was still 100 in ranking 3 months ago and will be around
34 or so.
Almost seeded for all master now...he hated qualies..

My 2 players are in the same battle tomorrow...

Not bad ... not bad at all. Gulbis looked a lot more focused and intense out there today and was in free-flow during that 2nd set. His serve was booming and he more or less just toyed with Felicia toward the end with some nice droppers and impressive passing shots.

He’s provided plenty of drama and excitement this week, and the experience and confidence he’s gained are priceless. And while I can’t imagine him beating Rafa tomorrow, I hope he can at least make things interesting.

Well done and great week Ernests :drink:

Expected and routine. Great week for Ernests; looks like he may have finally turned the corner in his career.

He wont win any more than 6 games against Nadal.

WTG Gulbis. I'm pleased of the way he has finally broken through this year. Though his journey in Rome ends tomorrow, I'm looking forward to the rest of the season. I was a bit disappointed with his showing in Indian Wells but he seems to have rebounded nicely during the clay season. Keep it up, man!

And he had 33 winners for 22 UE...compare to yesterday with more than 50 UE...

Madrid is next probably, hoping his draw won't be against a top seed at second round...he has been badlucky those past tourneys...

Bad for Feli but the good thing is that at least Gulbis will make it more competitive, Lopez would have just bend over

Just curious, but look here:

Yesturday's match - 6+2+3+6+7+6=30 games; 54 UEs it makes 54/30=1.8 UEs per game.
Today 7+6+6+1=20 games; 33 UEs 33/20=1.65 UEs per game.
Not a big difference at all.

He's done it on clay too. Of course that was before folding, but who cares?

Gulbis would need to serve lights out to make it competitive on clay imo, as movement is a huge advantage for Rafa. That was the main problem Stan faced yesterday and it should be aggravated today as Gulbis is a worse mover atm than Stan
