You are not sure about Davydenko? And you put JCF in front of Del Potro? Great stuff mate, just awesome! And if you are refering to current form only, then both Potro and Kolya should be out cause they're not playing at the moment.

And what are del porto's major achievements on clay...one FO semi? He's a little overrated on clay imo.

As for davydenko, I haven't seen him play well on clay in some time, so that's why I'm not sure (same for del potro really).

I might be wrong here but think that Ferrer has a better record on clay against top players...H2H doesn't say much apart from the fact that Verdasco matches up well with Ferrer. Just my opinion though. They are pretty close though.

4. Ferrer huh? better than Ferrero and Soderling??

6. Soderling why here?
7. Ferrero huh? the guy has won everything on clay.
8. Del Potro He made SF should be above Ferrer and company.
9. Wawrinka not bad but lower than Kolya.
10. Davydenko? (Not sure about this one) should be above Wawrinka with all those RG SF.

I suppose this is career wise and not current form. So i left you a comment on each.

I was talking about CURRENT form only...but in no way do I see Soderling better than Djokovic on clay currently or careerwise. Soderling has one FO final and more recently Barcelona final...Djokovic has 2 FO semis, Rome win, Monte Carlo/Rome finals + other smaller tournaments on clay (Estoril/Belgrade etc). Pretty obvious in my book.

Same for Djokovic VS Soderking... Nole will eventually make a RG final.

Yeah but he played 3 tournaments (are you talking about 2010 tournaments here? Because if you're refering to his FO final that isn't quite CURRENT now, is it?) and Nole only Monte Carlo...other tournaments Soderling was in Nole didn't even play (unless you're refering to his 2009 FO final here, which doesn't count as current), so it doesn't quite work. Had they both played same tournaments and Soderling did better overall I'd say currently Soderling did better, but that is not the case. We'll see what happens in Rome/Madrid I suppose.

Here's my list (http://statracket.net/?view=stats/category.php) (based on points won in ATP events on clay in the last year, qualifiers and Davis Cup not included). Yep, Federer is number one and still will be after Rome.

Based on current form, overall clay expertise, results, etc.

1. Nadal
2. Federer
3. Verdasco
4. Djokovic
5. Ferrer
6. Davydenko
7. Soderling
8. Del Potro(he is injured and has not played on clay in a long while so he is lower)
9. Ferrero
10. Nalbandian(has yet to regain top form but when he is on, he is very dangerous).
10. Gonzalez (since he has not played this year its solely based on when he was on).

Mats68
04-28-2010, 04:06 PM
I frankly don't understand all this hype in MTF about Del Potro's clay qualities and even about his chances of beating Nadal at RG. All this is based on the fact that he beat Nadal easily during the US hard court season (when Rafa was coming back from injury and then had a muscle tear) and that he reached one semifinal at RG. Delpo still has to prove he's a serious clay court contender, over the course of the European clay season, so far he has not. Soderling is proving it. Gonzalez has shown in the course of his career that he's a much better clay court player than Delpo, so have Ferrero, Ferrer, Nalbandian, Davydenko, even Robredo.

If anything he is underrated on clay IMO. And his achievements on red clay include, other than reaching the RG semis where he almost beat Federer, several won tournaments on that surface.

But of course since he is currently injured he doesn't really belong to the "current Top 10 clay court players". :p

Number 1 would obviously be Nadal by the way :p

What tournaments?...I'm sure there are plenty MM tournaments out there that players outside top 10 are capable of winning. Point is he hasn't won any BIG tournaments (Masters/GS) on clay. He hasn't even been to any clay masters finals! It's not like he's been consistantly reaching semis/finals of clay tournaments. How on earth is he underrated on clay?? Basted on what results other than his FO semi?

Del Potro won two red clay tournaments in a row in 2007, both of them belonging to the International/500 Series, plus he reached the semis of Madrid and RG. Like I said, he is underrated by a lot of people on clay here in my opinion.

Just cause Davydenko's been competitive (whatever that means...he's only been competitive in ONE match with Nadal on clay, way back in 2007 in Rome and that's it!) in one match with Nadal doesn't mean he deserves to be in top 5...how many clay masters finals has he been in? How many non MM clay tournaments has he won? Exactly!

Has at least semis in all clay masters, on top of multiple RG semis and QF. What more do you want? He needs to be Nadal for you to be sure he belongs in top 5/6, let alone at No10

^ Verdasco has had a much better year on clay than Davydenko. Davydenko has had a problem with an injury and he has not played at all on the dirt. Verdasco won Barcelona, made the finals of Monte Carlo and he will probably at least make the Quarters of Rome. So yeah currently Verdasco is better on clay than Davydenko. Its pretty obvious. In fact based on their current level on clay, Nando should be in everyone's top five.

They are not in the same league at all. Just because one is currently injured doesn't mean he'll have amnesia and forget how to play on clay once he returns. If you want to insist on current as "last few weeks", than you can just as well list all semi finalists from these few tournaments that have been played and be done with it.

^ Umm the thread is called "What are the current Top 10 Clay Players", not career-wise! And by the way Davydenko has never reached the finals of a masters on clay. He has reached the semifinal stage only three times in his career and the last time was more than two years ago.

Davydenko has not done anything of any significance on clay in more than two years(besides a QF in Roland Garros last year in which he got embarrassed).
He is about to turn 29, not getting any younger and if anything he has always been very overrated on clay.

Agree about Ferrero currently being better than Wawrinka...Not sure about Tsonga. He had a decent run in Monte Carlo, but he needs to do well in Rome (and beat some worthy clay court player/s) for anyone to regard him as a genuine contender for clay tournaments.

If anything I think that Ferrer is slightly underrated on clay. Except for Nadal he can beat ANYONE on clay imo. I know he has never beaten Fed but considering Fed's form in non-gs tournaments I believe that Ferrer could beat Roger on clay.

Of course, the guy who has never made it to second week of RG is much better because he had a good run just last week :yeah: What is RG QF, a 500 title and God knows what else from last year for Kolya, mind you when he also missed half the clay season, compared to that. Far more impressive wins in Verdasco's recent clay encounters as well, no doubt. Hopefully, we'll see their clash this clay season with Davy getting some matches before and settle this issue.

BTW, funny you should mention humiliation, since that's what I remember from his 4th round match with Verdasco.

Davydenko won a mickey mouse tourney last year facing a bunch of nobodies on the way to victory. Its quite simple Davydenko has been injured, he has not played at all on clay. Whereas behind Nadal, Verdasco has been the most impressive player on clay for this season so far. He has beaten like 3 top ten players. Davydenko has been mediocre on clay for the past two years and now he is injured, at 29, I do not see him doing any damage on this surface.

And like I said we are going based on current form as this was the whole point of the thread hence the title. :wavey:
By the way the Verdasco from last year is a completely different player from the Verdasco now and that goes for Davydenko as well.

:wavey:

1. Nadal

2. Verdasco
3. Djokovic
4. Federer
5. Ferrer
6. Soderling
7. Ferrero/Wawrinka/Tsonga tied.

I can't think of any other players, so Del Potro, Davydenko and Nalbandian would all be added to the list, if they weren't injured. Even the guys at 7 really aren't any sort of threats, and it's questionable is Soderling can hold his form on clay, and his play against Wawrinka proves those suspicions true.

IMO, there are 5 credible clay court players right now currently, and that's it.

I still think Fed is no.2 on clay, mainly because he always plays well in slams. Only after FO, if he doesn't do well there, I'd move him to 4.

Anyone watching Verdasco hit the ball right now, the way he is playing especially on the forehand side. If he wasn't a lil bit tired he would destroy Nole once again. Nando has really improved in just a couple of months, he is like a different player.

Is that the same Verdasco who just the other week only got 1 game against Nadal in MC final?

Its the same one that beat Nole 6-2 6-2!;) and just broke him here again despite not getting any rest in more than a month.

Verdasco lacks the confidence when playing Nadal on clay, that is why their matches are still so one-sided. And lets not kid ourselves Nadal is a whole other monster on clay.

On Clay
1. Nadal

2. Verdasco

3. Djokovic

Sure he is...but 1 GAME from supposedly 2nd best clay court player! That's pretty bad.

Its simple, Nadal is a very bad match up for Verdasco on Clay. They have a similar game but Nadal is a notch better. And most importantly Nando lacks the confidence, he does not believe he can beat Nadal.

I'd say Nadal is a little bit more than "a notch better"...but I get what you're saying, makes sense.

:haha: come again once those clay MMs are over and what matters is on (RG)... As always Nando will be happy with a quarter there :)

I agree with your point, but at this point, I can't justify putting him ahead of Verdasco based on current form of today. Overall I would, but that wasn't the question asked. Current form of today, Verdasco is the #2 player on clay. Federer I would probably put ahead of Djokovic, however, to #3. And as of right now, those are the only credible players on clay. Ferrer is playing well but he isn't any real threat, and Nole is struggling.
