Good day for ball-bashers.

Keep it up Erny. This clay should be ideal for you.

Very impressive from Gulbis & hopefully he can keep it up and at least give Federer a hard time. He'll have to lose the drop shots because they won't be as effective against Federer.

I had already bet that he will beat Federer ;)

Hard match for a rusty lazy number 1

Gulbis has avoided being Baggy's pigeon :yeah: Gulbis has big opportunity to beat Federer who hasn't played yet a match on clay this year. Federer's form is a mystery :o

I wouldn't be very surprised if Gulbis beat Federer but I am in doubt is he mentally ready to beat Roger

I hope he's not  but he looks better mentally in the beginning of this year, esp on clay

Federer surely needs matches before playing well.

If he loses, nobody will wish he didn't play Estoril, he will need it ;)

That match was so similar to Giraldo and Ferrero. Gulbis just hits so hard. Difference is, Gulbis was constructing points well, coming to net, and hitting big serves.

If Roger isn't on his game, Gulbis could beat him. But I don't see it happening.

To be honest I don't why but I have a felling and I am expecting to see ninja Fed in the first match

Gulbis was awesome out there today, really impressive.

Baggy is a clay court mug, but still, nice to see Gulbis so focussed.

Baggy + Clay = Epic fail

2 years and 11 months without a win on clay :help:

I agree. Gulbis' stunning disposal of Baghdatis was something for Roger to think about so I doubt it'll be an easy match for Federer, but I think he'll prevail in 3.

It's nice to see there's a worse clay courter than Murray :P

Anyway, yay to Gulbis! Interesting to see this match cause he managed to get a set from Federer on hard court earlier in the year. Should be an interesting matchup on clay.

Baggy on clay is like Andy Murray and the Davis Cup/closing out a major. Just ugly.

Impressive stuff from Gulbis ...

- 35 Winners
- 11 of 13 Net Points Won
- 82% 1st Serve [19 of 20 1st serves in the 2nd set, 95%!]

He seems to play with a different mind-set on clay - more patient, more consistent, and less UE’s. He had Bags on a string and was moving him all over the court with a nice combination of power and deft touch with the droppers.

Fed’s going to seriously have his hands full on Wednesday.

Great win from Ernie. Even if Baggy isn't great on clay it was good that Ernests held his concentration and made some very nice shots. Hope he gives Rog a game!

Very good use of dropshot in this match by Ernests :yeah: Baghdatis was completely unable to run them down.

Cute then and now! :hearts:

PS. The hair is cute but he needs to shave.

IT's just great to see him constructing points and playing with variety rather than just hitting the cover off the ball like last year. I really think he has a big chance against fed. Good luck Ernests.

Gumy is doing extremely well in his coaching...if Ernests would work more, he hates practicing...but if he keeps winning matches, he could give a little more hard work and break through top 20 soon...He came back from 99 to 40 in just 2 months...

Federer is playing double tonight as a warm up...his match against Ernests could be very entertaining...unless Gulbis' serves let him down...as against Verdasco last week.

Great job today, no doubt... but come now people, Roger will have a routine straight sets win over him so don't get too excited. It's easy to bring out your best and play to win against the likes of Bhaggy (no offense), but mentally Gulbi will fold- even if he's lucky enough to put himself in a position to win. I still see him too much inside his head to beat Fedtard. But I pray I'm wrong.

It was a joy to watch Ernest play today :D I wouldn't mind at all if all his matches at this tournament went this way  It's so satisfying after the abysmal 2009 season :o

ATP Site, after reporting on Fed & Allegro's 1st-round double win, goes on to say:

"Federer will challenge World No. 40 Ernests Gulbis of Latvia in his first singles match on Tuesday."

Poor Fed, his stocks must be really low if the No.1 player in the world "will challenge" the No. 40 player...lol

watching the re-play of this match now - Ernests played really well... hit some incredible shots and even played well at the net a few times! This court is definitely quick, which obviously suits him well.

I think Gulbis has a chance tomorrow  , as slim as it may be if he plays at this level. hope he can do it!

Felt bad for Marcos. Hopefully he can step it up going forward...

Gulbis had 82% of first serve, 5 aces...
36 winners...23 errors
11/13 net points won...
If he can maintain that average, he could do well tomorrow

Anyway, I am seriously thinking of sacrificing some precious bandwidth in order to watch probably my favourite up-and-comer take on my dear GOAT...

What's going on with Baghdatis?

He never played well on clay but in the last 2 years he's playing even worse on clay. He doesn't move well and has issues getting a rhythm. Don't know why he can't adjust.
