Mental midgetry and H2H aside, Verdasco could have won this a lot easier. He looks to be in better form now than Söderling, but had a tougher draw, and came through today even though he nearly ran out of gas.

All in all, a very good couple of weeks for both guys. Robin can take a lot of positives from his first clay court tournament of the season, and Nando can cherish the biggest win of his career. It will be interesting to see how long he can go in Rome now, as he must be getting tired.

Life's a bitch, but I'll have to eat my words from the Rome thread.

I can hardly believe that Verdasco fought so hard to turn around his match against Ferrer instead of taking his foot off the gas in the second set when I see his draw here, but I guess it was released around the same time as he played today.

Shame on me for disparaging the Barna tournament and Verdasco's efforts the past week. This is after all the biggest title of his career for several reasons, and he must be delighted with his win here, no matter how he fares in Rome.

Impressive win fer Nando. He showed some real veteran patience in riding out the Soderling barrages, and his fitness, defense, and forehand were impressive - esp. the blistering down the line winners.

Soderling looked rushed and a bit out of sorts. He had far too many UE’s, very little patience, and absolutely no point construction. His timing and ballstriking seemed a bit off, but he had no plan B . Or if he did have a plan B, it was simply to hit the ball even harder and go for more lines. He also showed very little interest in engaging in rallies beyond five strokes, which on clay just isn’t going to cut it.

Congratulations Nando on your first 500 victory http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/nahrung/a015.gif http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/sportlich/f015.gif

You only pay attention to some Rafatards. I've always liked Söderling to some degree and the RG defeat didn't change that. There are others like me. But most of the Rafatards that don't like Söderling disliked him long before the RG final. The RG defeat was more difficult because of the disrespect Söderling had previously shown Rafa.

That doesn't bother me because to beat a great champion a player needs to have a bit of disrespect -- or at least can't be overawed by respect.

Wow, you're taking one single comment way too seriously, sweetie.

It's not like I think that ALL Rafalala-tards hate Soderling but there is obviously a bigger proportion of Robin soderling haters among the fans of Rafa than among the fans of most of the other players. You may be just right about Nando's confidence

I don't fear anyone - except Nadal, says Verdasco

"Nadal is a tough proposition on clay and he's one or maybe even two levels above everyone else," 26-year-old Madrid native Verdasco, the world number nine, told a news conference.

"But I really feel like I can beat anyone else right now and I think I have a good chance of making more finals on clay," he said, including world number one Roger Federer and number two Novak Djokovic on his list of potential scalps.

This could not get any better, I actually had the privilege of seeing the final up front and center and watching Nando win his first Barcelona title(I actually got to meet Nando twice during this week and all I can say is he is a great guy). I am so happy for him, all his hard work is finally paying off, he already has four top 5 wins this season. He is playing with confidence, with belief and I can see him doing some great things throughout this season and in the future. He was really funny in the post match interview and I am proud to say I am an even bigger fan now than I was before. Spain is really kicking ass on clay so far this season, I hope we keep it up. VAMOS NANDO!!!! VAMOS ARMADA!!!!

It sounds as if you had a great time. That's terrific.

That's so phatetic and says it alla about Rafa's spaniard bithces. Sod would never go in with that state of mind in a match against Rafa RG anyone??!

Still hurts that Sod chooked it!!

More than pathetic, I would describe it as realistic. Everybody knows that Nadal did not win Roland Garros last year because he was not fit, he was probably injured although he never said that because he is a gentleman. Soderling is a very good player, but playing on clay against a fit Nadal he does not have a chance.

That wasn't the point. The point was if you go into a match with that mentality you have already lost. Soderling believed he could win and that's the bottomline. He could've gently folded that match like many players including Verdasco does every time. Also everything has to come to an end, the ifs and buts don't exist in tennis. The IF Nadal won, he would've beat Davydenko, Gonzalez and Federer too is moot now. You win or you lose the rest is just nonsensical jibber-jabber.

Verdasco beat Soderling, there is no IF Soderling would've picked up his game earlier he would've won. I could go on and on with examples.
