ROME (AP)—Roger Federer has entered the doubles tournament at the Rome Masters with Swiss Davis Cup teammate Yves Allegro.

Federer is playing his first tournament on clay since winning his first French Open title last year.

Federer and Allegro were given a wild card, and will open against Johan Brunstrom of Sweden and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands Antilles.

Federer and Allegro hold a 3-2 record in Davis Cup doubles.

In singles, the top-ranked Federer has a first-round bye, but has been drawn into the same half of the draw as Rafael Nadal, setting up a possible semifinal meeting between the two favorites.

The tournament begins Sunday.

Skipping Monte Carlo = Bad move
Playing Estoril = Bad move
Playing doubles at Rome = Bad move

I think it's high time for Roger to make a good move.

Expected after such a long break on clay, he needs to gain some confidence before playing RG.
Rome, Estoril and Madrid singles might be not enough.

He is getting older and he needs more time to get the rhythm.

Actually I like this move. Everytime he plays doubles his volleys become masterclass for a week or two. Thats one facet of his game that he really needs to click on clay, b/c lets face it, he's not the youngest guy on tour and I don't see him willing to outgrind his opponents on a regular basis and thus needs some free points wherever he can get them.

It also seems to improve his return game, which he'll need if he has to face Rafa.

Roger throwing a bone here for Allegro, helping his mate earn some money. Maybe they'll win a match or two, Roger will get to work on his net game and serving, Allegro playing for the cash.

Good decision Roger. Hopefully you use the net game and general aggressiveness from doubles and translate that to the singles court.

I hope Federer's physical shape will hold...

Playing 3 tournaments in a row was already something he has never done in the recent years. Now adding doubles to Rome seems like a bit too much.

If Nadal had done this, people would be calling him crazy and stupid.

Roger doesn't have a chronic knee issue and these aren't hard courts

I know but it's still a weird decision from Fed. To my awareness, Federer has never played 3 tournaments in a row in the past 5 years (I think he did it once in the Shanghai-Basel-Paris 2008 indoor circuit but ended up withdrawing in Paris) and now he's pushing 29. He's not getting any younger and he's what, the oldest guy in the top 10 right now?

He's probably not going to win more than one match so this is probably a good decision.. talking about match practice he played a practice set against Bolelli today and won 6-4.

He's probably planning to tank singles anyway ;)

It would make sense that he's not mainly looking to get far in the doubles draw, and rather just get some extra playing time on court working on this and that, as he's been out for a while.

I don't see him winning/reaching the final of the tournaments he's entered. It's alright I guess.

I hope they do some time, Rafa's asked him in the past hasn't he? I think Fed's line was that he doesn't play doubles often so he likes to help out the Swiss people in those cases.

Wow! It would be a lot of fun to watch Fed in Doubles. Thanks for posting this in General Messages since I don't go to player forums very often :)

maybe because he doesn't expect to win all of them?

if he is tired, he will pull out of Estoril/Madrid.

They won their first match 6-4 7-6(4) so even if he loses tomorrow against Gulbis, there'll be a bit more match practice. Apparently he was serving pretty well.

Exactly... and pulling out of Madrid wouldn't be too smart is the cause of that was playing Estoril and/or doubles in Rome.

Playing doubles is pretty fun actually so there's no harm. Allows him to mentally relax a bit more since he's having lack of match plays on clay. I want him to win the doubles title more than the singles :D
