Barcelona QF with 8 spanishs? it can happen!

That's SOOOO scary!!! The worst part is that has a very huge chance of happening, and if not in QF, it surely will be a semifinals only with spaniards!

Ferrer (8) is a obviously favorite against Bolelli, as Verdasco (5) vs. Melzer (11), Ferrero (7) vs. De Bakker.

Gulbis is not a Clay court player and Ramos-Vinolas just beat Gonza, so i think the breakthrough player of the tournment can go further.

Bellucci is not playing well, but neither is Garcia-Lopez, will be a match decided on the favor for the player who makes less errors. And i think that in spanish lands, Almagro (15) is a favourite against Tsonga (3), as Lopez (16) can surely beat Soderling (2).

Actually the only spanish i don't think is favorite is Navarro against Schwank, but they probably equal each other...

Don't worry, there'll be a Northern European interloper in there somewhere come the QFs.

Yes, like Henman who ruined the all argentine RG semi finals possibility back in 2004

It surprised me because Chela had had success vs Henman on hard, but Timmy was playing out of his mind tennis on clay, he could have won the french open

Sjengster
04-21-2010, 10:55 PM
Yes he could, but I don't like to be reminded of that squandered opportunity, even if the final result was a good one.

Don't forget the all-Argy semis in Hamburg the previous year, that was a particularly notable tournament as the mighty Olivier Rochus was the only man from the Northern hemisphere to make the QFs (he got demolished by Gaudio, and the other three QF victims were Gonzalez, Ferreira and Philippoussis).

ferrer, fererro and verdasco are pretty much givens.

Gulbis i think can come through if he keeps playing the way he is because he is playing well and not crappy like gonzo is.

tsonga will probably beat almagro because hes already proven he can beat him on clay and i think that hes just a better player.

depends what form soderling is on but he can obviously play well on clay.

i dont think an all spanish quarterfinal is as likely as you say

i'd put it more like 4 spanish and 4 non spanish players making it in.

spanish 4 in: ferrero, verdasco, ferrer and lopez

other 4 in: gulbis, belluci, tsonga and schwank.

hmmm i wouldnt consider a close loss to an inform Kohlschreiber, followed by beating a qualifying Nieminen and then Hanescu, bad form. I would consider barely beating Gabashvili on clay bad form though

I really cant see Lopez winning, and Navarro would be a surprise too

but I get your point, Spanish tennis right now is in a really amazing place

the sports program that started in the late 80's to prepare the country for the 92 Olympics keeps working and giving great results, tennis is a massive sport in Spain, probably sharing second place with basketball (after football of course) so the government support and availability of courts, trainers, hitting partners and general structure makes it big ;)

A lot of it came from the ideas of one man who passed away today, Juan Antonio Samaranch (former IOC President)

after what looked like a possibility of an all spanish quarter final they have gones 1-4 on the day and ramos-vinolas is currently 1-3 down to gulbis in the first set and verdasco is 3-5 down to melzer.

WTF??? BASKETBALL??? JUST BECAUSE OF GASOL?? MOTORSPORTS??? JUST BECAUSE OF FERNANDO ALONSO??? ARE U ON DRUGS?

No not just because of them.

Basketball: As a team they came close to beating the usa dreamteam. Ofcourse the usa (nba) is the best out there, but they have a very competive league in spain too. The nba is dominated by afro-american stars. Maybe you took the word 'dominating' too strong.
Ow and they have a lot more stars, not only gasol.

Motorsports: If you watch motogp, you will see that 125 and 250 (now moto2) are all dominated by Spainiards and spanish teams. That's a fact.
If you look at the Motogp class, you will see that they don't only have top riders like Lorenzo and Pedrosa, but also Barbera and Bautista and Espargaro. That's 5 spaniards, I don't see another 5 people from the same country.

Enduro (dakar): The one and only Marc Coma. Ever heard of?
WRC: Dominated by mr.loeb ( a frenchman) but Sordo is high up there too

And then we come to Formula 1:
Yes Fernando Alonso is the best on the grid, no?? But they also have De la rosa and Jaime Alguersuari (the youngest rider and a big talent)

and many more...

Cycling: I don't have to begin about this.

and soccer is obvious.

You have many nonsensical reasons.

Basketball... Just because they were close to beating the US, doesn't mean that they are dominating it, it means that hey are very good but not the best.

Motorsports... Perhaps some events but not all, not even close. Enduro, that's actually dominated by Finns (not dakar, but the world enduro championships). Rally, the biggest challengers to Loeb have been Finns. F1, Alonso, that's about it, and he has won twice.

Soccer isn't obvious even though Barca is my favorite team. Sure they have the nr 1 rank at the moment but the World Championships are coming and if they win, then sure I will acknowledge. One European Championship isn't enough to use the verb dominate IMO.

Nobody cares about the enduro championship. And I was not thinking of the European Championship, but more about soccer in general. I think La liga is the best. And yes spain have a reputation of choking when it counts, especially at worldcups

But this is getting a bit off-topic, so let's wait and see what happens.

Well, I think in a way you're right and in another way you're not. It depends how you use the verb to "dominate".

For example, you say that Spain isn't dominating football because they haven't proved to the world that they are the very best (and I agree with that) but then again you apparently have no interest in denying or at least questioning the main these being discussed on this thread that Spain is dominating tennis even though they don't have the very best and most dominant player in the world.

It's a bit of a tricky issue. For example suppose a nation has the best football team in the world but all of their other players are mugs and then there's this other nation who has the second best football team in the world and the rest of their players are really good too but not good enough to make it to the national team. Would you say that the first nation is dominating football?
Of course, this question is purely hypothetical but I think it raises the question on what he understand as sports 'domination' by one nation over the rest.

Why do we have to bash each others countries? Each country is unique, there are good and bad things about every nationality. I am proud to be from Spain, its my country and I love it. That does not mean I love all Spanish people. I am just proud of my heritage. I have lived all over the world(I am actually of mixed heritage myself), and I find that meeting people from different places enriches you as a person and as an individual. Every Culture is beautiful in it own way and there is nothing wrong with a little bit of patriotism but you should never resort to insulting someone's origin, nationality, someone's culture.
I find that pathetic.

Of course :o so I guess when you say the Spaniards are the best at sports you're also kidding... :o

Actually I never say that its trolls like you who do.;)

I support the players that I like, a lot of them happen to be Spanish and there is nothing wrong with that.

seems like the Brits are good at cycling, a sport we dont even like

dominated spain in the olympics

better champions league top 4, better league

best f1 drivers (2 different champions in 2 years)

better golfers

won football world cup

won rugby world cup

then you have snooker and darts domination

:spit:

I can only agree with this

as a Spaniard, those fellow countrymen who feel superior to the rest of the world really make me sick. It's a shame, but they deserve to be bashed :o

How did you manage to get the Mallorcan flag?

Actually I was banned from WtaWorld but it was not for posting fake pics, it was for something stupid that I did when I was younger(that came to bite me in the ass) and that is none of your business by the way, do not come in here starting trouble, talking about stuff you know nothing about.

By the way, I have never posted pictures on here, I do not participate in non forums, etc. I am here for tennis, as I am a fan. If anyone wants to know here is my facebook, http://www.facebook.com/giorgio.filipov, anyone feel free to add me, see my pics, chat, etc.:wavey:

That is all I have to say, now back to the tennis. I am not on here to talk about myself.

US Open Round of 16 with 6 spanishs? It did happen! Not bad showings from Almagro, Ferrero or Gimeno-Traver either (3rd round losses). Pretty amazing for a fast hard court.
