Gulbis wasted all 11 break points in the first set but Luczak was closer to win the set before the tie-break - led 6:5 (30-15).

Well, of course Luczak was closer, he was serving first. In general though Gulbis was very solid on his serve in the first set, he didn't face a single break point (and this is clay so it's even more impressive). I'm glad he didn't choke the tiebreak away. After he broke for 3-1 in the second set it was never really in doubt.

I was afraid all those wasted BPs would come back to haunt him, but got it done pretty straightforward after all :yeah:

There's an improvement in this department: very weak record 21-32 (39 %) before St. Petersburg '09, and very good after that: 7-2 (77 %) :yeah:

After Gulbis blew a 0-40 chance for the second game in a row, seemed almost inevitable he would drop serve or the tiebreak, so pleasant surprise he gutsed it out.

He's definitely improving :-)

 We can dream right!
So happy that he held it together after wasting all those break chances in the 1st.. Would love a match report from someone who was there.. Maybe we will at least get an interview?! Anyway, on to R2! Davai!

he is a talented player but i don't see him winning this title.......he should develop some consistency........maybe he should even sacrifice some of his power if required.......it's very difficult to be very offensive and consistent at the same time.......

Sounds like the first set was closer than need be but the important fact is that Gulbis eventually closed it out in straights :) Really pleased to see the young Latvian regrouping after that dismal stretch of 2009 results and hope to see him continue climbing up the rankings this year and beyond...

looks like the 22 hour drive to Barcelona didn't pay off for Luczak
