He should have a decent break then. He's had an excellent start to the year so he should rest while he's got the chance.

He needs surgery. If he has surgery now, he will miss the whole clay season...

If he is injured, then why play.

Stopping play won't help. Only surgery can fix the problem. He obviously doesn't want to miss the whole clay season and so, he's only planning to have surgery after Roland Garros.

Assuming you aren't saying bullshit (yes, I am giving the doubt here) . Fixing the problem before it gets worse and the recovery takes longer. It's not like he is at the end of his career at this moment in time. It's not like he is going to get a draw of Ram, Lu or Blake at RG.

Happens in all sports to be honest. In the NBA many clubs don't let their top players to get surgeries for particular injuries if that means missing an important part of the season. And injuries are part of the game, I'd expect. Moya himself once said that there are always physical problems in the body of a tennis player but you just have to get used to live and play with them.

Still, I'm not sure how serious is Mónaco's problem or how much it affects his game. I trust that he knows best what to do.

Well wrist injuries are very serious so there is no point in playing.

What the other guy said it's true. He's planning to play the entire Euro clay court season and get his surgery after RG which would mean for him missing the DC QF vs Russia.

Doesn't seem like a very wise decision but who am I to judge. Maybe he needs money on the short term or maybe he really thinks he can do well on the clay in spite of his injury (in his left wrist appararently).

He obviously can't perform on the level he's capable of, so what's the point of choosing competing over surgery.
It's not like he's going to come very far at RG or anywhere else if he really needs surgery

It's not a wise decision, especially since he has to hit a 2 hand backhand. He is not a destitute Futures player as for Davis Cup, no point going there clearly unfit.

but whats the point in him playing until after Rg if he's going to lose 1st round if every tournament??? thats what i think is so stupid, its not like Nadal where he's getting to the semis with pain. he's just bombing out in the first round and making his injury worse, its ridiculous

Well it doesn't seem like a wise decision to me either but it was was he decided in any case. I can only guess that maybe other personal factors are in consideration that we're not aware of or maybe he just really thinks he can make it through on the clay without a surgery (something which based on his results thus far doesn't seem likely). Maybe this early loss in Barca will compell him to change his mind, though.

As for the DC, he would definitely miss if he gets the surgery after RG. He wouldn't play for about 2 months.

You gotta go where the money takes you. Playing out the clay season and picking up checks before having surgery is probably what I would do.

He thinks he'll get a draw of like Davydenko + Djokovic + Nadal + (insert four more players who retire from matches a lot) and just bide his time till they retire due to fixing, the heat, a random tear, etc.

you dont think the $290,000 he's already made this year will cover the cost of the surgery and 2 months off? :P

and of course he has other income from sponsorships and appearance fees

It's very sad that Pico isn't getting the wins in the best part of the season for him, if the surgery is needed he should take a rest in order not to get it worse. Anyway if he and specially his team doesn't think so (which is a huge mistake), nothing else to do than cheering for him. Once in the court, everyone is in the same conditions.

Also great win for Dani, people here should give some more credits for him. Guy is playing good tennis on clay this year, could make some other surprises in these events.
