I started multiquoting earlier but ran out of time before posting. By the time I got back to it, the thread had already been closed. Here goes some multiquoting anyway.

Right back at you. :worship: The length of your MQ is impressive. :hatoff:

EDIT: that didn't come out right.:lol: :aplot:

You don't really flunk when your pronunciation is bad as long as you're understandable but you do lose points over it. Pronunciation is important over here in every language so they do strive to get your accent as well as it can get. I even had lessons out of school to get the best possible Dutch pronunciation (not by choice, but my parents thought that it was a good idea).

My eldest sister was in an American cult when she was a teenager/adolescent. One of those :cuckoo: cults but that's beside the point.
She learned most of her English there, including the accent which is the most horrible accent you can imagine. I mean, there are obviously a lot of nice American accents to listen to but the one my sister uses SUCKS but I don't really know where it's from because when I ask my sister, she just replies: "Accent? What accent? I don't have an accent." Okay. Like you said, there are many American accents. I tend not to like southern accents much (Georgia, Tennessee, Texas for example). Today I was at a conference where the guest speaker was from the American midwest and while in general his pronunciation was similar to mine, so many times I thought to myself, "I could have guessed his home state even if he hadn't told us."

In Romania you can take a train but it's not sure when you'll arrive at destination :o Or if for that matter coz stealing the trainrails or trainrails components is rather frequent :tape:

My first English teacher was an old lady who was particularly strict about accent. I didn't learn much else from her  but I had a perfect British accent.

That changed when I went to the US. :( So do you think you speak more like an American now than a Brit or some combination of the two? You don't have that terrible Bostonian accent that some of them have, do you? :scared:

By the way, in my mind, you all sound Canadian. :o

I worked for this guy and if the reports were written in American English, he'd tell the person who wrote them to do it again correctly. That's dumb. The differences are not that great and they're all legitimate.

An admission that you are American? North American, Snoo.

Well, my sister was a teenage girl when those vultures approached her and at this age, people tend to be more vulnerable. When she met them, they were just a friendly group of young people who met each other a couple of times a week to talk and to "learn to play the guitar".
...

Well, she's out now so all is well. :) Hilde, I remember you mentioning this before. It's terrible and I'm glad she eventually got out.

British accent is supposed to be sexier, no? I don't think that's necessarily the case. There's a huge variety in British accents.

I used to work with a man from Ireland. I would have been happy to listen to him all day. :hearts:

Mr. Young, an author, a television host and the pastor of the evangelical Fellowship Church, issued his call for a week of “congregational copulation” among married couples on Nov. 16, while pacing in front of a large bed.

Clara Blow? :speakles: I thought that you managed to save yourself from the pits of doom that is MTF but you're still here?
Hi! :wavey: :)

we are in the process to start adoption.
:yeah:
From where are you planning to adopt (if you don't mind this question)?

Okay.
We have lots of different dialects in tiny Flanders as well (not forgetting the various dialects/accents in The Netherlands) but there's something like standard Dutch. If you want to hear how to pronounce Flemish properly, you need to watch the news because their Flemish is :worship: (accept when they can't pronounce the rolling "r" properly so they end up using the French r instead. (no offence to the French "r" but it's not how our "r" is supposed to be pronounced)).

Probably a dumb question but isn't there such a thing as standard American? The sort of American English you tend to speak when you drop your local accent/dialect?

I want those bitter bitches to either assume their hatred or refrain from bashing. You can't bash all the time and still claim to be some angel.
I don't think that snoo or star ever claimed to be angels or do you expect them to have a "Yes, I'm a bitter bitch so I have to shut up while JM is a troll and a tard so he can write whatever he wants" as a disclaimer in every post?

I don't know if they got warnings or not, JM, so I'm not going to comment on the fairness of this.

JM I agree that making jokes about babies getting mono is not particularly funny.

However your fury seems a little disproportionate.

Especially since your own behaviour in the field of making cracks about subjects other people don't find funny at all is hardly above reproach.

So, to conclude, let's all calm down, let there be light, and sunshine, and rainbows, and lollipops, and music, and laughter, and above all, love.

The Fed fans don't defend me when I bash Rafa, they think I'm a tool. You fangirls on the other hand, seem to never be shocked when Rafa fans vomit on Fed or his family...

For heaven's sake, JM, you only see what you want to see, don't you?

I didn't read the thread to begin with so how am I supposed to bitch about something I didn't see? I only noticed it when you brought it up here.

I've already said that I find jokes on Fed's babies not a good idea so I'm not going to repeat that again.

To get banned you need write down things. Nothing wrong with my siggy.

If snoo showed up with a "Fed's twins/mono" type of signature I wouldn't mind it since I couldn't be sure what it means... same goes for my current siggy.

Not really. I guess the closest one might get is that some African American USians will speak differently in the neighborhood than in the work place. Newscasters must be put through some kind of speech drill because usually they don't have regional accents. So for instance where I grew up there were local non-standard pronunciations but that's not a dialect. When I learned the correct pronunciations, I started using them and didn't go back to the non-standard pronunciations. However, I didn't learn the correct pronunciations in school. In normal terms of the definition, you couldn't call any of the regional differences dialects at all although there is a push to have African-American casual speech deemed a dialect.

I enjoy nearly every regional accent. I like to listen for them and analyze them. Normally they are only variations in vowel sounds. Sometimes a consonant is involved. D is substituted for t. In the Mississippi delta region, the r is softly slurred and nearly disappears at the end of a word. "River" is a word I can listen to a delta dweller say over and over again. On the great plains -- and perhaps other places -- people add an r to certain words but most routinely "wash." So Washington becomes Warshington. But, this isn't a consistent pronunciation. Crick for creek is a sort of rural pronunciation. Also ruf for roof. But, these are tiny variations. Northeastern accents tend to be the most grating to my ear. The most fascinating local accent to me in a distinct accent in the New Orleans area. A small portion of the population of New Orleans referred to locally as the "yats" (as in "where are you at?: "where y'at?") have an accent quite similar to the accent in New York City.

Getta and Metis! Lovely pictures of bread! I love bread of all sorts. It's my BIG weakness. If I were forced to eat only one food, it would be bread.
