He is currently playing the 15th Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup, in Malaysia. After qualifying in two pretty easy straight set matches. He is now played three matches and is through to the quarter final's in straight sets. He will next play America's Campbell Johnson.

Duckworth played in Thailand last week where he made the main draw by qualifying then made it to the third round, he also ended up winning the doubles title with Benjamin Mitchell, who did the double last week winning the singles and the doubles. These are some of his stats.

Birth Date - 21/01/1992
Birth Place - Sydney, NSW
Residence - Sydney, NSW
Nationality - Australian
Plays - Right Hand (Double Handed Backhand)
Favourite Surface - Grass
Coach - Ben Pyne
Current Ranking - 169
Career High - 17

He is also currently ranked 1395 in the men's rankings at the moment.

Good Luck to James in Malaysia.

He is through to the semis, het won 6-1 6-4, i think he has a good chance of winning this tournament.
Also in the other semi final Andrew Whittington will be playing.

There is something odd about this guy, he has been around for so long yet he is still playing juniors. I remember he played in the Australian Open junior tournament back when Brydan Klein won it, which was like 4 years ago.

My guess would be that he realises that he can't make a huge impact on the senior scene at the moment and is going to try and use his junior results to gain WCs and assistance into senior tournaments.

Maybe that is his plan. Being born in January is great for your final year of juniors as you're older than virtually everyone else. I mean he's 9 months older than Tomic but they both have the same date they have to finish juniors (Dec 31 this year).

James has just made the final, with a win over an American wildcard 4-6 6-1 6-1. He will meet fellow Australia Andrew Whittington in the final, amazingly they are both qualifiers. Good Luck to the both of them. Would be great to see a win from either won but im not sure but i reckon the winner will be top 100 on monday.

When he was given the wild card, Tennis Australia overlooked a number of promising 17-18 y.o at the time. He duly had his arse handed to him on a plate by his opponent. I don't really see the reasoning behind playing juniors once you have ATP points. Having said that all the best to James with his up coming matches.

Duckworth d. Whittington 6-3 6-2. Should get his ranking into the top 60, would be smart of him to play in the G1 next week in the Phillipines to ensure he gets his ranking high enough to play in all the junior grand slams this year.

Suprising that our juniors do so well in these so called high level tournaments.

James has won his second junior G1 title in as many weeks, he will move to around 28 in the world with this result. I guess he will come into the Grand Slams with lots of confidence.

Duckworth ending up making the quarter-finals of the Australia F4.

Duckworth is on a massive 15 match winning streak in juniors by reaching the semi-finals in Belgium. All these wins have come at G1 events.

Hewitt2010

Duckworth lost in the final of the G1 junior event to local countrymen Jason Kubler 6-7 7-6 6-4. Now Duckworth is playing the Roland Garros juniors he won first round 7-6 6-7 6-2 he had a few match points in the second set tie break, he also got 17 aces must have an ok serve never seen him play but good luck in the second round hope he can win.

James is currently down 2-3 0-15 serving in the second set after winning the first set 7-6, also can someone answer this has anyone watched Duckworth in a tournament or anything because he has got a serve, i saw the score at 5-5 he had 2 aces then ended up with 8 for the first set he got 6 aces in a game and a tie break thats not bad. Now down 2-4 15-0. Good Luck James.

Duckie got the upper hand in the 3rd, running away for a 6-2 last set win after a huge struggle against the No. 12 seed. Have watched James progress through the years, was at Shore School in North Sydney(just like Jonesie) and has developed a decent serve and an impressive game from the back of the court. Did some damage in the Oz WC play-off last year, beating Klein. Hope he goes one better than Jonesie at RG

This is a very impressive win, I think Arguello was the highest ranked player in the draw (in men's). Mina will also be very difficult though.

Hewitt2010
06-02-2010, 01:33 PM

Yes he is playing very well. Probably the form player left in the draw. I know it is a long way off but if James can actually win RG he would become the world number 1 junior, overtaking Jason Kubler and we would have the number 1 and 2 junior players in the world.

Mina is probably the biggest threat to him, not saying he will win but I think he'll put up a good fight.

Been awhile for Duckworth to get back on court, this time on clay, in a Futures in England. He has progressed to the semis , cruising through the 1st & 2nd rounds before coming up with a creditable win over Poch-Gradin 62 75 in the QF round. Faces a sterner test in No.1 seed, Belgium's Yannik Mertens.
Let's hope Duckie can rise to the challenge.

Still a great week to make the Semis considering he hasnt been playing much. Anyone know what his ranking will go up to?

RustyOz
05-14-2011, 04:37 AM
Duckie currently ranked 653, with 27 points; defending 3pts from an Oz F4 QF last year; 6 pts gained for semis in $10k Futures will go to 30 pts - with 30 pts (from 12 matches)should go to between 625-630 in ranking.
He has only 2 pts to defend in Sept and then none until Nov, so if he can continue his good form he potentially could reduce his ranking quite considerably by December.

RustyOz
05-19-2011, 01:36 AM
In an all Aussie clash in the 2nd round in the Poland F1, Duckworth gets up against Matt Barton, coming from a 26 first set deficit to win the next two sets 61 75 and advance to the QF round. Plays No.8 seed Blazej Koniusz next. Duckie will have to bring has A-game... let's hope he can make the semis.

Sounds like wishful thinking from Brent Larkam. There is still a massive road ahead for James. After this win he is on 48 points but he needs to at least gain around another 152 points to guarantee a Grand Slam qualifying berth. Not taking anything away from this week but lets not jump the gun here like we have with so many other juniors. James has a massive road ahead of him if he wants to get to that position. Still great to see both James and Ben Mitchell winning their first futures tournaments this year and nice to see the 1992 class doing well.

No need to qualify that with the clay surface. Tomic NEVER won a single futures event, and only made one final when he was 15. His surprise challenger when he was 16 kind of enabled him to skip futures (well that and wild cards, AO runs and an anorexic playing schedule).

Ended up losing the final in straight but still a good two weeks for him. Plays in the Polish 10k this coming week and then another 15k the week after in Poland again. Potential to have a very very good month in Poland considering he has already gained 33 points in two weeks. He is now going to move into the top 500 so he should have a good chance of getting seeded in some futures events after this week. Between now and the end of November he has just two points to defend in September so he could really make something happen if he continues this form.

Perhaps TA were right when they were saying he'll be playing RG qualies next year. He seems to be quite talented on the red dirt.

Great reult for James beaing Janowizc. Unkucky Duckie could not get the win in the final.
Even though he is in a purple patch and playing well James should considering missing one of these Futures events, as hard as it is to contemplate now, to give his body a rest. If you lose 2nd or 3rd round then it is ok to play every week, but playing 5 matches a week when making the finals every week takes a lot out of a player mentally as well as physically.

James into another final this week and is going to face an unseeded German Peter Torebko. 3 finals in 4 weeks is very impressive especially when you take into account he didn't play last week so three finals in a row. Duckie will move to around 438 if he loses the final and around 408 if he wins. Would obviously be a massive win for him if he could do it, I'm hoping he stays on the European clay for a couple more weeks because he seems to be playing really well but I haven't seen him on any recent entry lists.

any news when his next event is ?

Taking this week off and then entered in a 10k future in Germany on clay. Might snare the 7th or 8th seeding for that one. The following week is entered in lots of Euro futures but only has direct entry into a Serbian 10k future so I think he'll be heading there. Sticking to the European clay is probably a good thing because he seems to be thriving. Seeing as his points from last week won't be added on until after Wimbledon his results in the first German future will add to his ranking, a semifinal showing should get him inside the top 400 and a win would send him to about 375.

Probably jumping the gun a bit expecting him to go deep but if he were to be ranked 375 after Wimbledon he could start entering some low paying challengers in Europe and might even make some cuts. As it stands he is currently about 60 points shy of the top 300 and if he can get inside the top 300 he would make most challenger cuts. Although if history has taught me anything James will probably get knocked out first or second round in this next German future and just be average for the rest of the year but I am hopeful James will kick on for the next few months and inspire Kubler/Mitchell to start making moves as well.

James is going to have to make at least the final this week to take his number 2 Aussie '92 spot back from Ben Mitchell. A win this week would see James move around 350 in the world. Big opportunity for him this week considering this is a 15k future. If this back and forth battle between James and Ben Mitchell keeps happening then both are going to be playing Grand Slam qualifying by the time the US Open comes around!

Neither are far from the top 300, both just about two 15k futures titles away and if James picks one up this week then the potential year end ranking for him could be quite amazing considering where he was ranked this time last year. Come on James, bring another one home!

Amazing run and win against the number 1 seed. He will now snatch the number 2 Aussie '92 boys spot back from Ben Mitchell (will be official next Monday not this one). A win in the final would see him move to about 355 and loss would see him at about 380. 350 is nearly high enough to make some of the recent challenger cut offs, probably needs to win just one more 15k future (would put him at about 310) and would definitely have a chance at making challenger cut offs. Although with the way he is heading he might make the US Open qualifying cut off.

I'm getting ahead of myself though but I really hope James and Ben continue this little battle for at least one more tournament after this. Either or both will probably be in head over to China soon as an orange boy I would imagine even though they have done it before. James is also entered in an Italian future next week too but I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled out. I'm hoping he plays because he is obviously good enough to go deep amongst basically the same field but I am also kind of hoping he pulls out because I don't want him to burn out.

Really hoping the Duck can get the title this week. Would be his fifth final in a row if he is able to get past the number 6 seed in the semis. A win this week would see him move to around 327, runner up would see him move to around 346 and a semifinal loss would see him move to around 361. A win this week would see him be about 16 points out of the top 300. He is getting closer and closer to that elusive top 300 and a chance to start making challenger entry cut offs.

It has been such a rapid rise from the Duck, he started the year at 741 and now is potentially one week from a spot in the top 300. I do wonder if his success on European clay will transfer on to the challenger circuit because he could become a great option for our Davis Cup team when we have an away tie on clay. I guess we'll see but I'd love to see him get a win this week and good result in the next few weeks so he cracks the top 300. Good luck Duckie, still lots of hard work to do.

anyone know what event is next for james after this week ?

Is entered in a French 15k future on the clay this coming week where he should be seeded 4th then is on the alternates list for ATP Gstaad the week after. Would be good to see the Duck test his abilities in an ATP 250 qualifying draw on European clay given his recent results. A win in the final will have so many advantages for James and will see him just one good tournament away from the top 300. I'd like to see James stay in Europe for a little bit long just to establish a top 250 ranking and then start to move around maybe to the US or Asia for some challengers/ATP qualies.

Five finals in a row and there has been a trend win/loss/win/loss so history predicts the Duck will get up tomorrow if your a superstitious person. I would usually say that either way it goes in the final it will be good for James but in this case I think he really needs to win this one to set him up for the rest of the year and a big 2012 hopefully.

Great result for the Duck. The French future draw is out and his draw looks pretty good being seeded 4th and with the only other seed in his quarter being the 8th seed. Faces a Frenchman ranked 949 so should have a fairly easy first round ahead of him.

His confidence must be at an all time high at the moment and Tennis Australia would be absolutely licking their lips with both his and Bernard's recent results. I'd love to see him go all the way again this week but fatigue and a stronger field may mean he won't. If anyone is interested a win this week would send James to a ranking of about 291 in the world.

I guess we'll see but I think this may be one of the Duck's last futures tournaments ever, especially if he wins it. In this form he probably deserves to be on the challenger circuit but the ranking is just not quite there yet to guarantee entries every week.

James got up in his first round 3 & 4. Next up is likely the number 4 seed which should be tough. If James can manage to go deep this week and win the title he would actually crack the top 300. Once he cracks the top 300 I think that is when he should start playing challengers. Last time he played a future in Italy he won it so it is not impossible to think he could go deep this week.

Duckworth d. Kubler 6-4 6-3. Solid win from James and has an unseeded Argentine in the semis. Hoping James get the win this week because he would crack the top 300 and most likely be ranked high enough to make Grand Slam qualifying cuts after this week (if he wins). Somewhere around the high 270s would be his new ranking if he did win this week. Can't find James on any entry lists for the next three weeks and one of the tournament is in Australia so it would seem he is going to start playing challengers.

Nice one J.D. (I've been watching Scrubs so that's what I'm calling him at the moment), 4th Futures titles for the year! I'm going to say now that he will get an AO MD WC in 2012. The only Aussie ranked above him who is younger is Tomic plus J.D. has never played a tour level match yet (read: no main draw wild cards yet). Winning several European clay futures as a teenager deserves respect.

Nice one Ducky. I would like to see how James goes on Challenger circuit hard court before handing out MD wild cards on hard court to him, not that he doesn't deserve it. No main card for J.D. yet sounds the same as for Greg Jones. Botn NSWelshmen. Something in that?
Duckies credentials are good, but so were Jonesies at the same age - and he only ever received one ATP Main Draw singles Wild Card, into the Medibank - a NSW tournament. Hope Duckworth gets better and that Jonesie gets recognised sometime for his achievements at an early age. No opportunity can translate into no progress. Look how Tomic benefitted.

Well I am not sure how I missed it but James is going to be playing the next two weeks in Romanian futures on clay. He is the number 1 seed this week with fairly weak field for a 15k future. Hoping James puts in another good performance this week seeing as next week is a 10k future with less points on offer. The week after James is entered in a 15k+H in France so it would seem he is going to keep playing futures at least for now. Not trying to look ahead of myself but if James were to win this week he would move to around 242 in the world!

I do sort of wonder how much longer James is going to spend on the future circuit, I guess you do have to make your schedule 3 weeks in advance so you can't really blame James for continuing to enter futures. If he won one of the next three upcoming futures I would have thought that would definitely be the time to start playing challengers but based on history I wouldn't be surprised if James kept riding this train until he gets into the top 200 (he is only about 80 points away from the top 200 as it currently stands).

The match actually isn't over, it got suspended. He is first up on court in about two hours from now. An MTF poster who was present at the match stated he thought James played like a robot and just played in a predictable manner. It seems to work for now so not really much to worry about but you like to hope that sometime in the next year James develops a big weapon on court.

He stands at 6ft tall so he is never going to have the biggest serve on tour so perhaps he should be working on power in the ground strokes and maybe focusing on one in particular. James has direct entry into a challenger in Colombia next week and might make the cut of another challenger in South America the week after. Depending on how he goes will probably determine whether or not he attempts to play any of the remaining Aussie futures for the year. Expect to see Ducky get a wildcard into Sydney ATP and if he is really lucky into the AO main draw.

That is actually not as uncommon as you would think. Both Bernard Tomic and Ben Mitchell attended TSS (The Southport School) on the Gold Coast and were actually in the same class! Now both are top 10 Aussie players. I think it is a case of success breeds success. In saying that though I do believe the Brisbane GPS sport system (TSS is a part of GPS) is a gold mine for any sport that is willing to invest money into it (see NRL as reference).

James got unseeded Frenchman Axel Michon in his first round of the Colombian challenger. Michon has won two future tournaments in his last three tournaments so it will definitely be a big test for Ducky. A possible second round match up with the current top 100 player Alejandro Falla from Colombia would probably show where James really is and how far he is from the ATP level of play on clay. A win in his first round will put him just 2 points behind Ben Mitchell in the race for the number 2 '92 born Aussie player, it has really been back and forth from both of them all year but I'm sure they are inspiring each other to want to go out there and get some results.

James is likely to stay in South America for a few more weeks, he is on the entry list for a challenger in Argentina after this coming week and on the entry list for the challenger in Uruguay the week after. He hasn't got direct entry in either of them so might have to play qualifying but that didn't seem to be a problem this week. He'll probably stay for another week after the challenger in Uruguay as there is another challenger in Ecuador so it could be a good finish to the year to get some decent exposure to challengers across different countries.

RustyOz

Ducky started well against Michon, winning the 1st set 6-3 after saving 8 break-points and converting his only break-point opportunity. But he was unable to break through in the second set, with Michon saving 3 break-points to get to the tie-break. In the tie-break they swopped early breaks but Michon prevailed, winning the tie-break 7-2 and then getting the better of James in the last set, converting just one of five break point opportunities to win the set 6-4.
A good effort by James, where a bit of good luck could have made all the difference.

He will face Marcel Felder in the final round which could be tough. Another main draw appearance for James would most certainly build confidence for James as well as proving he deserves his spot on the challenger tour. A win in the main draw will also see James enter the top 250 for the first time in his career and tick off another milestone in a gigantic year for him. “It’s been an amazing year for James, he’s performed consistently the whole way through and improved his ranking by 400 spots down to 260 last month,” said Duckworth’s coach Brent Larkham, Head Coach of the AIS Pro Tour program.

“He’s capped off his year with some great results in the play-off and played well against top opponents.

“I’d really like to pay tribute to James’ professionalism, which for a young man just starting out on the Pro Tour is exceptional. He’s really leading the way for all the junior players in Australia and it’s great to see him setting such a good example.

“His attention to detail in everything he does, his preparation and planning, he always gives himself the best opportunity to perform.

Duckworth, along with other members of the AIS Pro Tour program, is in a final training block before the summer of tennis starts in earnest. His plans include playing qualifying in Brisbane and Sydney.

Wow, when you look at it from that picture it does look very extreme. Perhaps he was trying to slice the first serve but even then it shouldn't be that far. When you watch him play he doesn't hit the ball that hard so taking away potential speed from his serve feels like a disadvantage to me. On the flip side these things are very good on a clay court so that could explain his success but you really have to be able to switch your play when you step on to a hard court or even a grass court for that matter.

I'm sure he will eventually learn to play differently on different surfaces but I can't help but think this is just habit from the clay tournaments he played this year.

Excellent win by Duckie, showing that his WC Play-off campaign was no fluke and that he is in good form.
Poor form from TA not being able to give tennis fans live coverage of the event on a public holiday. What an opportunity missed.

Cheers for that. Hopefully he can adapt. Mahut isn't a very good returner so James' serve might hold up alright tomorrow regardless.

If you watch how James is serving today it seems he has no problem flattening out his first serve and getting it over 200kmh. Great to see he knows how to switch his play when on a different surface. Even though he is down a set he is more than capable of beating Simon, mainly due to the the way Simon plays.

I was very impressed by the pace of his serve. Plus his kick out to the ad court is excellent. I feel he could possibly take more advantage of that serve (taking them way off court) than what he did today.

James was impressive in his match against Simon. A few errors when Simon stepped up his game at the end.
On this display Duckie should be able to hold his own on the Challenger circuit this year.
Will be interesting to follow.

Deserved for sure. The draw construction in Sydney is great for wild cards as the top 4 get byes so there's no brutal 1st round draw.

Tough it was... as Niemenen too good for Duckworth, beating him 62 62. Duckie did push Niemenen in first set, forcing him to defend 10 break points, but only able to convert one of them. Good experience. Better luck next time James.

I was a little bit disappointed with the way James played... heīs obviously very aggressive but sometimes he should stay on the baseline instead of approaching the net... I saw him play against Simon and Tipsarevic and was amazing on the net but today he didnīt win as many points as needed but he was always trying to apporach the net everytime he had a chance but it didnīt bring many points... hopefully next time he will be luckier and win...

Great win for James and he is now into his first challenger semifinal. I think the match against Matosevic is definitely winnable, in fact I would say James is the favourite. If James does lose he'll move to about 184, if he makes the final he'll move to about 177 and if he wins Caloundra he'll move to 160 in the world. Considering James only has 7 points to defend between now and mid-May means he could really move up in the world. His schedule goes like this from what I can tell:

Caloundra Challenger(this week)
Toowoomba Future
Mildura Future

Lots of points to gain in the next two futures. After that I presume he'll go to Europe and enter some challengers because he hasn't entered the ones in Asia.

Rovegun
02-10-2012, 11:27 PM
he has done well so far in Caloundra so hopefully his run can continue over Matosevic but heīs the 1st tough opponent in my opinion... those 3 matches were a must win and James managed to be through with smaller troubles... but heīs in his 1st SF of challenger which is great for him and it gives him some confidence and experience....

are the next tournaments confirmed officially? Iīm not sure if itīs a good choice still to play Futures with his rankings but I understand for Aussie in his rankings position is tough to go and play some challengers in Europe because everything costs money and stay in Europe can be too expensive for James right now but I also know the Australian Institue of Sport has got a base in Italy but maybe James plans to stay in the European base from spring...

anyway good luck and fingers crossed! beat Matosevic!:D

My choice for Duckie would be for at least a week off, no tennis, as he has just come through a very intense period of the Australian Summer of tennis.
A week off, no tennis, no training, then perhaps a week or two training/hitting/coaching before hitting the Challenger Circuit, say in Europe on clay. No need to burn-out and he needs some time for development, to add to his obvious good game and potential.

I think as well he will take some rest in next few days and will practice a lot to stay competitive and then he will travel to Europe for clay but there is possible to play on outdoor clay from April so I reckon if James wants to compete in March he will go to America there are held some interesting big challengers or he can try to play qualies of Indian Wells and Miami.... heīs got almost nothing to defend until mid-May as someone said here so he can try everything without stress and pressure...

JD goes down 7-6(5) 6-3.

it looks like a pretty tight match according to the result... it might be only a break difference in the 2nd set so it looks like very a close match... but even though James lost itīs good experience for him to play SF and gain a few points to rankings which takes him into Top 200...

Yeah - well done James on getting below 200. Leaves him well placed to play Challengers this year and the qualies for the Grand Slams and maybe even a few ATP qualies.
Heard that Duckworth and Mitchell were having a week's training in Noosa with Rafter and Josh Eagle, and maybe Marinko too, as Eagle also coaches him.

I would say it is almost definite that James will enter the challenger the following week in Marrakech, Morocco (effectively ruling himself out of Miami qualies). From there I would imagine he'll just travel around Europe (mostly France and Italy) playing clay challengers and perhaps the ocassional ATP qualifying in the lead up to Roland Garros qualifying. He only has 13 points to defend between now and the start of Roland Garros so there is lots of room for James to move up the ranking and perhaps clinch a seeding at Roland Garros qualifying.

agree, what you said looks more likely and makes sense more... he spent the whole last year playing on clay and made good results so he can take something out of it... he can save his money by starting to play in Europe the next week than by going to Miami with unclear future in the tournament there... so I really see playing on clay from March in Europe (not counting Africa) can provide him a good preparation and confidence and as you said he has only 13 points to defend till Rolang Garros so he can gain some points as well...

so weīve got his schedule for March so hopefully James can get some wins and points in Morocco to help him to climb up the rankings... he played the whole season on clay last year and gained some experience how to play on this surface and won all the titles on clay so he could use it and get some good results not only in March but during the whole clay court season...

If that is James's schedule, the AIS is now thinking a lot smarter. Unlike when Klein and Jones were in the AIS, all they did was follow the older guys around (Smeets, Feeney, etc.) with no great thought behind their schedule. Ludicrous, they were the "guinea-pigs"(experiment). At least the AIS is learning (if they were the thinking behind James's schedule).
