just a question, how long can a player stay or be a part of the AIS? I guess there is an age limit....

Ha... only the AIS know that secret mate.
Four years ago they had a range from 18 year-old (Klein/Jones) to over 28 year old (Luczak, Buccanello) and a group in their mid-twenties (Smeets, Ebelthite, Feeney). Then it was radically reduced to an arbitrary age, say under 23 (Klein/Ball/Jones, maybe Ebden? and others). Now it is 20 years-old or below I believe (Mitchell, Duckworth, Saville, Kubler - maybe others). Next year it will change, at the decision of Tennis Australia, to ???
See the Tennis Australia web-site for further info.

thatīs interesting at least... I browsed on that website for a few times when I was looking for some information about James but read many players were included in that sport system like Rusty as well if Iīm not wrong... I thought the AIS helps young athletes to get better in their sport until they are settled and able to make money on their own.... but I donīt know if the AIS works on the same basis like Bolletieriīs academy in Florida where many current players practice as well but I think they have their own order and rules and are not under the pressure and influence of the academy...

The AIS is a governement funded body, not an independent enterprise like Bolletieri's academy. Players have to meet a certan criteria and be selected to ve in the AIS. There are various levels, full scholarship, guest scholarship, etc. There are not a lot of player's at any one time at the AIS, so the emphasis is on training blocks, physical testing, phyiscal training and coaching. Their are AIS rules are regulations to be followed and the pressure to perform to keep your scholarship and meet the criteria.
The past few years, ex-AIS players, if they have maintained their ranking, are supported by Tennis Australia in the Davis Cup Development squad - players such as Ebden, Marinko, Jones.

oh, thank you very much for the explanation;) it makes me smarter... so you have to be the very best or one of the best to get there and be a part of this program if I understand that well... so not everyone who has a lot of money can get there you have to perform pretty well to become a member of the AIS... I have read on the Tennis Australia website that James has been given the scholarship for another year so does it mean he or his parents or sponsors donīt have to pay anything in the case of full scholarship?

I have discovered on the AIS website that there are not many tennis, rugby, soccer players etc. according to photos so I donīt know if all the players are shown so I am a bit interested in how they can make a team in team sports :D

The AIS scholarship will pay for coaches, travel expenses and acoomodation but the players generally have to pay back 50% of the winnings, up to some maximum per year (no minimum payment)

The AIS supports all Olympic Sports. I am not sure if they do have AIS teams but they provide the coaching for the elite athletes who form the Olympic teams in say Soccer, Hockey, Basketball, etc.

This is Duckworth's support site, so I suppose that should be enough on this subject on his page.

James starting the tournament with a match against Aljaz Bedene from Slovenia whoīs no. 139.. The Slovenian won a Casablanca challenger two weeks ago so it looks like a pretty tough first round for Ducky... James has nothing to lose he can only surprise...

anyway good luck and fingers crossed! it would be nice to get some points and beat a better ranked player....

Ducky will face Stephane Robert in 1st round of the Marrakech challenger... Robert is the 7th seeded and no. 122... I think everyone has wished James a more gentle draw... it would be nice to get through but Robert is a solid clay court player....

RustyOz
03-18-2012, 09:40 PM
mmm - tough draw that. Duckie will have to play at 100% in order to get the better of Stephne, but go4it Duckie. Good luck.

Very tough match. I still remember Robert beating Berdych at last year's FO cant see James winning this one.

he's started well and won the first set 63... lets hope he can keep it up!

Hewitt =Legend
03-19-2012, 12:21 PM
Robert has no weapons so if Ducky can stay strong from the back and keep the unforced errors to a low he has a good shot of taking this out.

Chris.
03-19-2012, 01:06 PM
James won 6-3 7-5. :woohoo: He was down 1-4 in the second set so great fight back James. Next up either Pablo Carreno-Busta or the man who beat him last week Aljaz Bedene.

well done James! itīs a surprise for me but I am happy he got through he has 6 points under his belt but it would be nice to go deeper in the tournament but it will be pretty hard if he faces Bedene again but now James knows him better and could take an advantage of the previous match... anyway great comeback in the second set to upset a seeded player... keep it up! good luck in next match!

James lost 63 16 67 to Carreno-Bust in R2 in Marrakech... 14 aces for James :worship: but bad luck he couldnīt win in the tie-break which is a bit lottery but at least he gained 6 points to rankings...

next tournaments should be Saint Brieuc (2 April) in France and Blumenau (9 April) in Brazil... I reckon he will play also other Brazilian challengers in Santos (16 April), Sao Paulo (23 April) or maybe Rio Qeunte (7 May) but I think he will rather come back to Europe after Sao Paulo to play Prague, Athens or Rome before the FO qualies starts....

Duckie loses to the Frenchie WC, going down 64 36 46. Surprised he lost, especially after he won the 1st set. Not good for the confidence.

he should have won thereīs no doubt about that but on the other hand when you take a look at his last few results they are pretty tight I believe good times will come as soon as possible hopefully now in South America... James needs to gain some points there because it wonīt take a long time until he defends his points which got him so high...

Great win in a very tight match against a local. Cant see him beating Vecic though who made the third round at RG last year.

RustyOz
04-12-2012, 03:41 AM
Yeah, good win.
Duckie struggled to serve out the 2nd set at 5-4 up, got broken but broke back immediately.
Veic will be a lot tougher, he has some good results, mainly last year and is a typical clay court grinder - long hair and all - but Duckie can rise to the occassion as he gets settled on the south American clay.

Rovegun
04-12-2012, 12:07 PM
it wasnīt Jamesī best performance but won which is the most important thing... itīs never easy to play those clay court specialists but good nerves and great fight from Ducky... James can be satisfied with QF Veic will be pretty tough for him but James has nothing to lose and can only surprise he was also able to beat Robert who seems to be a better player right now than Veic... I think the matches against clay court players are very useful for him heīs gaining a lot of experience by playing against them...

have you seen that funny point at 5-5 in the 3r set when James broke him? James was pretty lucky at the moment there....

Yeah, that game had a few funny bits, like a defensive lob that essentially won the point and a lucky net exchange for Duckworth. James lost 6-2 6-2 to Veic by the way.

Rovegun
04-14-2012, 11:47 AM
yeah, unfortunately James lost but Veic was too good for him yesterday I didnīt expect much from Ducky.. but James gained another useful experience and gained some points which he will need in future... next week he continues his Brasilian tour in Santos... And...
the pressure starts to mount for Duckie,
who lost a close 3 set match to qualifier Trungelliti 57 64 46

Got to feel for him.

Rovegun
04-18-2012, 08:29 AM
Trungelliti didnīt play anything special IMO... I donīt say James deserved to win but was leading 42 30-0 in the 3rd then made some silly mistakes and lost the game... and also in the 3rd set he left Trungelliti running and approached the net then got an easy ball but volleyed it out like he didnīt care when Trungelliti was completely out... maybe I am a bit harsh on him but I am just disappointed how foolishly he lost the 3r set...

IMO James didnīt play so much top spin today especially on his forehand he seemed to play it flat more often or didnīt put so much top spin like against Kirche last week...

Chris.

James takes on WC Pedro Joao Sorgi in the first round of Sao Paulo.

04-24-2012, 12:19 PM
Sorgi is promising but still only a Futures level player so James should win.

James wins 7-5 4-6 6-3. Yet another long match and closer than I would've expected. Plays Galdon next who beat 5th seeded Alves.

Rovegun
04-24-2012, 09:37 PM
I saw only the first set and Sorgi looked very talented with some strokes he put in James was 42 down but managed to come back... happy James won this match... those matches against the South Americans seem to be never easy for James and pretty tight overall it doesnīt matter if Ducky wins or loses.... he beat Galdon in the 1st round in Blumenau so hopefully he can repeat it...

RustyOz
04-25-2012, 11:47 PM
James plays another three setter, and wins, again advancing at the expenses of Galdon. He sneaked the 1st set 76(5), lost the 2nd set 57 and smoked the 3rd 61.
Keep going Duckie ...

well done Ducky! happy he was able to make it through... he should have won in 2 sets because was serving for the match in 54 up but now it doesnīt matter because it seemed he looked pretty well in the 3rd set... a lot of points were added under his belt and can gain other ones if James wins today he has a great opportunity to make semis...

heīs ahead of Hewitt now and overall he has climbed around 100 spots up so far this year.... thatīs great!

RustyOz
04-26-2012, 11:42 PM
Duckie into the semis, winning the battle of the youngsters with a straight sets win 75 63 over Argentinian teenager Facundo Arguella.
I reckon another win, up against Julio Silva, will put him in prime position for that French WC. If he wins the tournament, his case will be even stronger.
32 year old Silva will have the clay court experience but Duckie will have the height and serving advantage.
Go Duckie...

Chris.
04-27-2012, 02:50 AM
Yeah this is a huge match for him.

James has a week off then heads over to Europe for the Rome-II challenger. I suspect JD will also try and enter Bordeaux (France) the following week, but that entry list is so strong he doesn't even make the list (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=200699).

Then Roland Garros qualifiers are just around the corner, or Roland Garros itself if he lands the wildcard.

Rovegun
04-28-2012, 12:16 PM
bad luck Duckie but I am satisfied with how many points he gained in South America but it could have been a bit better but James will bring 44 points back to Europe which is great IMO...

I took a look at the Tunis entry list and James is on there so he should play there next week.... but maybe he should take a week off to rest a bit...

EDIT: James is not playing Tunis.... responsible decision...

I thought he had done quite well at Wimbledon in his years as a junior but, in his whole junior career he only ever played one grass court event and that was Wimbledon but it was when he was 18, he made the QF's and lost to eventual winner Fucsovics who Ben Mitchell also lossed to in the final, so i then looked through his whole mens career and this Nottingham challenger this week is only like his 4th, 5th or 6th on the grass over like 5 years of playing but it turns out his favourite surface is grass so maybe he played on it first as a real young junior?

Young James is through to the QF's after a good come from behind win over Bossel, Ducky dominated the first winning it 6-2, before his opponent came steaming back in the second winning it 6-1, then James was down 3-5 in the final set and served it to 4-5 then broke to get it even at 5-5, then it got to the breaker, Duck lost the first point on serve then won 6 of the next 7 points, he won 6-2 1-6 7-6(3)!

Both gotta be happy with that draw. This could be a first round match at a Challenger but instead they are playing for 45 big ones and lots of cash.

Whoever makes the second round also has about as good a 2nd round match as they could've hoped for pre-tournament.

They are lucky they drew each other - at least one of them will advance.

Gutsy effort by Duckworth. Have to admire the pluck of the duck.
But have to question whether he should have played the doubles match after his tough 5 setter against Mitchell.
I know doubles is not as intensive as singles but another long match would have drained those energy reserves.
Great fight Ducky.

It might have been a Futures tournament but it was a near Challenger field and Stephane Robert is a class, former top 100 player. Plenty of upside to be had by him for the rest of the year... and a few bonus points too in a week where there was not much Challenger action.

And the next weak result is coming for Duckworth.
Losing to Andrea Arnaboldi in Sydney (he was born there) is simply a sign that he is not good enough to be a Top 200 player regulary.

I am not a fuckin fan. I thought he has some talent and i was impressed last year in Australia but he simply isn't good enough to be Top 200-250 constantly.
He gets humiliated by Andrea Arnaboldi at his home tournament and on his best surface. Nothing to add here.
He was down in 5 of 6 service games (15-30 or 0-30) and broken twice.
Not good enough for Challenger, should play Futures in the next months and skip this level where he can not win a single match.

Great fight by Duckie. He saved three match points in the second set - one on his serve at 4-5 down, then two in the breaker, at 5-6, with Chiudinelli serving (actually didn't really save it as Chiudinelli serve a DF), then on his serve at 6-7 down. Chiudinelli must have been spewing to have to play a 3rd set but did well to bring it home after that scenario, double fault on match point.

TA are capable of anything but to choose him over Millman would be a bit off.

n8
04-02-2013, 10:00 AM
^I disagree. Duckworth has played a much greater percentage of his matches on clay. TA should take surface ability more into account with these special wild cards. At this rate, Millman will be front and centre for the US Open wild card. I think that would be fair and give Australia a better chance of another main draw win. But obviously results between now and then could make a big difference too.

Sam21
04-02-2013, 01:35 PM
at this rate, Millman won't even need a wild card for the US Open. as for the French both would be good choices, it might come down to whoever has better results leading into it. just as long as Matt "Eight-match-losing-streak-on-clay-dating-back-to-2010" Ebden doesn't get it i'll be happy.

I would hope Millman be able to make the US Open main draw directly. Duckworth has played more matches on the clay but have the results been good enough? They have been ok but to me it doesn't suggest that he has a big advantage on te surface to ignore the huge ranking difference.

Yeah, it's also possible that they'll just choose Krygios instead.

One often unconsidered reason to choose Nick is that other higher ranked players will get into qualifying and therefore still have a shot at the main draw. I don't think Nick will have a chance to improve his rank enough before the entry deadline to get into the qualifying draw directly.

Back onto Duckworth - who won his first round at the Itajai Challenger, beating wild card entrant Hadlich easily 61 62 but then, after a days break, collapsed to Portuguese gun Gastao Elias (Pepe) 67(5) 61 61.
James' serving was well below acceptable, at 35% for the match, and he was lucky to win the 1st set after saving 4 out of 5 bp's. Elias saved 3 of 3 bp's in 3rd set but Duckie faced 8 bp's, Elias converting 3 of them.

Now double break down 4-1...
But breaks back for 2-4.
Keep fighting Duckman.

Damn drop serve again to trail 2-5, serve % woeful at below 30% in 2nd set.

Kavcic wins 2nd set 6-2. Big trouble in little Paris for Ducky now.

Disappointing loss. I reckon the qualies took more out of him than we think.

James has drawn Dusan Lajovic in first round qualies for Wimbledon. Definitely winnable for James with Lajovic not having played a match on grass in 12 months...

Good win for Ducks, not given that his opponent is good on grass but that James was clinical in getting off the court quickly. Surprisingly he will play Agustin Velotti who beat Donald Young 6-4 6-3?

Chris.

Young is useless not a huge surprise. Good luck James.

Duckworth will face off against his fellow 1992 born Kudla in round one. Kudla has won 6 of his last 7 matches (QF Queen's and Wimbledon qualification) so he will be tougher than his ranking suggests. But still a winnable match for Duckworth if he serves well.

n8
06-26-2013, 01:11 AM
He lost to Kudla 6-4 6-2 3-6 4-6 6-1. Such a shame after getting it back level. Back to the clay Challengers now.

God.he climbed back from 2 sets to love down, broke early to lead 1-0 in the fifth. At thispoint I went to bed as I assumed, wrongly, that he was home and hosed and would progressto the second round.Instead he loses 6 games on the trot. I wonder if he had expended so much energy in retrieving those two sets that he lost his energy levels and hit a wall. Such a shame!

Its halfway through 2013 - What do we think about James Duckworth this year? Pass or Fail and why?

RustyOz
07-08-2013, 11:44 PM
Good year for JD so far, has been in three Slams this year - outstanding.

Has booked 263 pts so far this year and has 53 pts to defend.

Pass for Duckie with more to come.

AussieAdz
07-09-2013, 03:24 AM
Yeah definite pass for Ducks! To qualify on the clay and the grass shows what he could become. Two futures wins including one in South America on Clay is fantastic. Needs a strong finish to the year and could be pushing for Direct Entry into the Australian Open.

Duckworth with direct acceptance into an ATP event.

Plays Aljaz Bedene (7) in round one in Bogota.

Will be a tough match but could beat Bedene.
Go Duckie

RustyOz

James comes through against the No.7 seed Slovakian Aljaz Bedene (ATP 87)win one break in each set being enough for a 63 64 win. Duckie did not face a single break point in the match.
Up against Canadian Vasek Pospisil (ATP 89) next. Looks like Pospisil just missed out on being seeded, but another very winnable match for James.
Go the Duck...

RustyOz
07-18-2013, 11:35 PM
The Duck goes close but acquiesces at the death, losing 57 63 57 to Vasek Pospisil.
The end of the first and third sets being the difference, as well as the serving.
Duckboy had low percentage first serves in the first and third sets, but more telling was the fact that he was unable to force Vasek to face any break-points in the match.
Better luck next time. Got to play those clutch games better Duckman.

Plays No.1 seed Illya Marchenko (ATP114) in QF.
Go James
