anyway, i translated a couple of articles fro the china open chinese site, which haven't appeared on the english site yet... so... here goes... the first one... from yesterday, September 11.

September 11, 2004

Today, Safin and Ferrero were the brightest stars at the China Open. Many screaming fans were running after them, hoping to get an autograph or just a smile. After successfully obtaining Ferrero¡¦s autograph, many hopefuls waited patiently to obtain Safin¡¦s.

Appearing on center court, Safin took his time to get started with his training session. He first chatted with Ferrero who had just ended his session, then signed some autographs. His unhurried manner led his fans who had been waiting for a long time to start cheering wildly and screaming his name in Russian. This however, had no effect on Safin, who took his time to warm up, while chatting away with Ferrero. 15minutes later, he finally stepped on court.

Unlike Ferrero, Safin¡¦s training did not draw many loud applause. His training was simple, mainly comprising of the return of serve and hitting the ball hard ƒº The hour long session quickly came to an end and upon realizing this, the fans gave another round of wild applause.

Because Ferrero had given out autographed tennis balls which he had used in practice earlier, tournament staff handed 5 or 6 balls to Safin to be autographed. This lifted the mood of the crowd, some of whom began waving their hands about in the hope of catching Safin¡¦s attention. It was disappointing then, to see the staff keeping the tennis balls after Safin had autographed them.

Just as the crowd was feeling disappointed, a dramatic moment arose. To prevent the fans from harassing Safin, the staff directed Safin to another exit. However, this move was rejected by Safin, who proceeded to move towards the fans eagerly waiting for him at the exit, under the watchful eye of 4 security personnel. The crowd swarmed towards Safin, stuffing everything from tshirts to caps towards him to be autographed. After satisfying everybody¡¦s requests, Safin left the arena, with the security personnel.

2nd one...from today, the 12th

On the 2nd day of the China Open tournament and the qualifiers are still battling it out. But, the “BIG 4” of Ferrero, Safin, Moya and Srichaphan aren’t taking it easy either. All four made appearances on the practice courts this morning. Even Ferrero, who had a webchat this morning, appeared on court half an hour after that event. If it weren’t for the fact that Ferrero recognized one of Sohu’s (the webchat ppl) photographers and gave him a radiant smile, we would have had our doubts about his identity!

Amongst the many practice courts, it’s easy to identify the ones on which the top players are training. Just follow the crowd! On court 3 where Ferrero was sweating it out, the entrance and exit were guarded by two security personnel and anybody who had no business entering didn’t stand a chance of getting close. On the other side of the fence, Ferrero’s fans were watching his every move, cheering wildly whenever he made a good shot.

Over at Safin’s practice, the fans were out in full force too, as were the security personnel. However, one foreign photographer somehow managed to sneak on court and merrily snapped away. Security questioned the photographer, but decided to let him off. Safin mainly concentrated on working on his serve.

Out on yet another court, the fans were gathering with some screaming wildly. It turned out that Moya had appeared. Oncourt, Moya’s coach was being entertained by his vast collection of expressions. Fortunately, the girls watching behind the fence were not close enough to observe Moya’s expressions or they would have gone into hysterics. With the help of our camera zoom, our reporters managed to get pictures of his lovely expressions.

Just as we were happily taking photos of Moya, the crowd moved towards another direction. It was Srichaphan, leaving the courts under the watchful eye of security.

At the China Open, the superstars are all taking their training seriously. From the looks of it, they are all intent on making an impact at this tournament.

this is turning into a jiat soliloquy. anyway, i found a 3rd article and duly translated it. and after i was done with that...i found a fourth. gosh... i hereby announce to one and all that after today, i probably won't have time to translate anymore articles from chinese to english cos after tomorrow's lecture, i will have a report to write which unfortunately is due on friday at 12 nn. HOWEVER, knowing me to be a super procrastinator and slacker...u might just get lucky and i might decide to translate sth while waiting for inspiration for my report. here's the 3rd.
*********
Hot on the heels of Schuettler’s arrival the day before, Moya, Ferrero, Srichaphan, Safin and Nalbandian arrived in Beijing yesterday to prepare for the China Open.

With the arrival of 5 superstars in one day, the capital’s airport was buzzing with activity. At 9am, Spain’s Ferrero flew in from Madrid. He was followed an hour later by Safin who came from Moscow. The 4 hour time difference did not affect Safin. “ I’m really excited to be here this time, because I get to lift my racquet and play a few matches properly. I don’t want to leave too early, so I brought along 6 racquets,” (only six? Hmmm…)said Safin, pointing to his huge racquet bag. In contrast to the wide awake Safin, Ferrero appeared tired, although he felt that he would be more alert after a hot bath. But Srichaphan, feeling that he was in “familiar territory”, he flew in with his father without warning, and even booked his own accommodations and transport. At 7.15pm, Spain’s other superstar Moya arrived with his friend Nalbandian of Argentina. In contrast with compatriot Ferrero who chose to keep a low profile, the enthusiastic Moya drew the shrieks of many fans.

Besides the players who have already arrived in Beijing, Hrbaty, Schalken and others will also be arriving this weekend. In addition, this year’s Wimbledon champion Sharapova and multiple Slam winner Serena Williams amongst other, will also make appearances in Beijing. The Olympics womens doubles champions Li Ting/Sun Tian Tian and the first Chinese to enter a Grand Slam semis Zheng Jie will also make an appearance in this year’s addition of the China Open.

and the fourth....my comments in brackets.
*****

This afternoon, Safin and Ferrero had a contest. Don’t worry about missing such an exciting event, because it was all in the name of fun, during practice.

Before the contest, Safin and Ferrero had a conversation on courtside. The conversation also included their coaches and assistants. From their expressions, the conversation wasn’t merely about tactics. The stubborn Safin was exaggerating his behaviour (haha), waving his arms around and causing the seated Ferrero to laugh uncontrollably. Of course, Ferrero had his chance to speak too and the volume of Safin’s laughter left the onlookers dying of curiosity.

The contest started and Safin’s father (hmm….misha’s there? Or could they have mistaken peter for misha?) kept picking at his game. On some occasions, Safin had to stop for a discussion before continuing with the game. The silent Ferrero also took this contest very seriously, his solemn expression indicating that he treated this like any other match.

The friendly contest gave the fans reason to cheer. Each camp applauded and cheered wildly whenever their favourite at every good shot.

Because of the overwhelming numbers of fans who turned up for the match, the police had to intervene ever so often to maintain order and confrontations between them and the fans nearly erupted. However, the police managed to settle everyone down although this was shortlived. Upon the conclusion of the match, the fans surged forward once again. (gee…talk about a security nightmare…)

The well-trained security force quickly formed a human wall and under the escort of 8 bodyguards, Safin and Ferrero managed to escape from the fans (gosh. That’s scary…). With such an overwhelming response to a practice match, if Ferrero and Safin should really meet in the main draw, the enthusiastic fans would probably overwhelm the two superstars.

http://sports.sina.com.cn/s/2004-09-12/1003364211s.shtml here's a very nice article abt marat. but unfortunately it's in chinese. the reporters asked marat to rank 'family, tennis, frds and beer', marat said he'll put family to the 1st place, including his current girlfrd, dasha, and then frds, tennis and beer. marat also mentioned that he treats every relationship very seriously, so he felt very sad after his broken-up with silvia and that's why he treasures his relationship with dasha very mumch. he also said that he may retire if he has family and children coz actually he wants a simple life and being with his family only. marat also said that he feels thankful for his fans, but at the same time he's worry as well coz he's afraid that dasha will feel jealous lol~~~ he also asked the reporters whether they think he is handsome. of cuz the reporters said ' yes ' and they asked him to look into the mirror if he doubts it.
i've tried my best to translate the parts i think they are the most interesting, but very sorry that my english still sux!!!

I went to see the practice of marat this afternoon, though it is the first time I saw him so near, it was not an exciting thing in certain level for me...
he did not play very well during the practice match VS jc... so finally, he shouted at himself, then I followed, but no one followed me!!! if fact, he does not have as many fans as jc has in china... so sometimes I feel lonely... jc has too many fans here... horrible scene to see jc practiced and did every tiny thing!

That's definetely too much security. In Dubai they didn't guard Anna Kournikova this way (not guard but tried to prevent the crowd from squashing her, that's all). Also, in Dubai the players walf to and from the match with 1-2 security guys with them, but 5 minutes before or after you see them walking around the smae routes completely alone. lol. It's pretty safe out here.

“A Kid in one hand and a Beer in the other – Sensitive New Age Guy Safin declines to discuss about the tournament”

With the help of a translator, the affable Safin displayed his true, inner self to this reporter. Throughout the discussion, this reporter strongly felt that the Safin sitting in front of him was definitely not the notorious “barrel of dynamite” who tosses his racquet on court to let off steam, but is a person who has high hopes for life and a very good “catch” for the girls.

“I’m really touched by the Chinese fans’ enthusiasm.”

In November last year, Safin, at the invitation of the tournament organisers, travelled to Beijing with Thailand’s Srichaphan for a promotional event. The two players were also the earliest amongst the superstars to commit themselves to this year’s edition of the China Open. Returning to Beijing this year, Safin confesses that he is like before, very excited and that touring the snow covered streets of Beijing last year is an event that still brings back fond memories.

Safin says, “Last year, I had a lot of fun here in Beijing with Srichaphan. The beautiful city also left a deep impression in my mind. During my visit last year, I was surprised to discover that I had so many fans in China. Arriving at the airport today, there were also many fans receiving me and I’m really touched by that. The field is very strong at this year’s tournament, and I cannot guarantee that I can achieve great results but I hope that I can put up an exciting performance for the fans.”

“Would sacrifice tennis for family.”

As many fans would know, there was once a beautiful lady by the name of Silvia by Safin’s side. However, the two broke up last year (is that right? Hmm. Thought it was earlier then that. Anyway, doesn’t really matter), which left Safin dejected for a while. However, at this year’s Australian Open, the tennis world suddenly discovered that another Russian lady had joined Safin’s entourage – Dasha.

Under a reporter’s persistent questioning, the 24 year old Safin admitted to dating Dasha (oops. Almost typed Sasha. Haha) At the reporter’s request, Safin also ranked the 5 most essential things in his life – family, tennis, friends, beer and girlfriend. Safin slyly replied, “First would be my family, which includes my girlfriend. Next would be my friends, followed by tennis and finally, beer.”

Safin confesses that he is very serious about his relationships and so, was upset after his split from Silvia. This also caused his to cherish his current relationship. However, Safin also professes that if he were to start a family and especially if he were to have children, he would most probably choose to retire from tennis and end the frequent travelling, to enjoy his life. “Marriage and children. I think I’d like to have at least 2 children,” Safin admits his “ambitions” truthfully, “I like the idea of enjoying family life.”

“More good looking male players than female player.”

Whether oncourt or offcourt, the good looking Safin has always caught the attention of female fans and he is often surrounded by huge crowds of passionate female fans. (rotflmao) Towards this fact, Safin is very touched but at the same time is afraid that his girlfriend might get jealous (awwww…) During the interview, Safin even asked the reporter, “Do you think I’m good looking?” The reporter replied in the positive and also advised Safin to take a good look in the mirror. Safin smiled and retorted, “Goodness, how can guys look in the mirror, only women do that!” (heeeeeyyyy!!! *indignant look*)

Returning to serious business, Safin replied, “I feel that there are more good looking guys than girls in tennis. There are too few beauties on the WTA tour. In contrast, there are a whole bunch on the men’s tour, including Haas, Hewitt, Roddick and Philippoussis.”

When asked by the reporters if he would do an Anna K and earn big bucks outside of tennis, Safin said, “I will definitely not do this. I have been approached by many people to be their spokesperson but I’m not interested. I’m only interested in tennis and beer (rotflmao). I yearn for a peaceful life, which is also why I strive to be like Sampras and not Agassi, because Sampras is also one who yearns to be away from the spotlight.” (yeah right… suuuurrrreee, whatever u say marat.)

“A Kid in one hand and a Tsingtao in the other.” (tsingtao’s the Chinese beer. My Dad says it’s quite potent. Lol)

If racquets were alive, they would definitely not want to land in Safin’s hands, because he is notorious for destroying several a year. Safin confessed during the interview that he has no desire to change this habit and is also incapable of doing so. “But each racquet costs a lot!” the reporter protests. To this, Safin slyly retorts, “It’s sponsored anyway.” (I think this entire part was ripped off every other interview that asked about the racquet tossing. Geesh.)

Safin’s other habit is beer drinking (haha). Especially Tsingtao (anyone feels that he’s just being nice? He has done this local product endorsement before hasn’t he? But once again, me dad says the beer’s not bad. So maybe it’s true? No idea. Any Chinese fans out there?) A few years ago in Hong Kong, he was introduced to the beer and was immediately hooked and thus became a loyal Tsingtao supporter. “Many people have urged me to give up drinking. Initially, I was also apprehensive but later, I discovered that drinking beer doesn’t change my physique (guess he implies he doesn’t develop a beer belly…hahaha) and so I developed the habit drinking beer everyday.”

“I really enjoy tennis because it brings about extreme emotions and allows me to fulfil my dreams. At the same time, it also brings about financial security. But I do not merely yearn for such a life. I’ll let you in on a secret. My greatest dream is to be able to carry a kid in one hand and hold a Tsingtao in the other. Maybe if that day comes, I will finally be able to enjoy life fully.”

and i found another article. but i'm sooo not gonna translate it.

here's the gist of things.

marat and moya played an exhibition match. loads of fans gathered to watch. marat was in a good mood. marat won with some nice shotmaking (or so they say). moya wasn't in a very good mood cos of the "loss". marat's mood was very good. marat signed autographs for everyone who wanted one, even though there were like 10 guards surrounding him. and when he tried to sneak more autographs, the guards stopped him hahahaha... moya wasn't in a very good mood. didn't sign autographs. awww. that's about it.

anyone who wants the full article can go to tgfr. sarat has kindly translated it. it's on the china open thread. page 8

Safin won the exhibition game with Moya
September 14,2004
Everyone doesn't want to lose before the match, but 1st seed Moya was caught with this bad luck situation. Yesterday Moya and Safin showed up in the central court to join in an exhibition game which was organized by sponsors. Safin who enjoyed showing himself won the match, which made Moya depressed a lot even he didn't pay any attention to disappointed little fans nearby.

Moya and Safin were the most popular players in this tournament without doubt. Before the exhibition game started, many little fans had been full filled the stand. Later on, the two players showed up the training field. Each of them was around by four bodyguards and several public security. With a few words, they began to practise after they put down their bags. Meanwhile the emotions of fans raised up too. They wielded the prepared posters. Looking from the stand, fans of these two players were equal more or less.

Although it was boisterous off the court, on the court the performance of these two were quite different. Safin was very excited from beginning to the end, perhaps he was more suitable for the court and atmosphere. Several wily points of fall of his forehand made Moya helpless. Compared with Safin, Moya was difficult to be excited and find feelings on the court all the time, even it seemed that he didn¡¯t take it very serious. He lost the match very easily at last.

Losing made Moya much unhappier. He sat here, wiping sweat, and then went away with his bag, even didn¡¯t care the sign book or posters which was given by the little fans. However, Safin who got "the first victory" was very delighted. He satisfied almost everyone who asked for signs, even when he walked outside with several bodyguards, he tried to accept a sign book from a fan which was stopped by the bodyguard unfortunately. Safin made a face to him (or she) with a shrug.

Only the top-8 players in the world, according to the Indesit 2004 ATP Race, go. Mr. Marat will not go unless he plays stisfactorily, especially in tournaments like China Open.

Qualification: The top seven finishers in the ATP Champions Race 2004 will qualify. The eighth place will go to the highest-placed Grand Slam winner who finishes outside the top seven but within the top 20. If no player fits this classification, the eighth place will go to the player finishing eighth in the ATP Champions Race 2004.

There are 4 players already qualified (Federer, Roddick, Hewitt and Gaudio as GS wildcard). I really hope Marat manages to do it ;)

http://sports.sina.com.cn/o/2004-09-16/10451150127.shtml

it's about the food that the players like to have at the hotel. i've translated the relevant section aka...the part on marat. (my comments in brackets as usual)

Marat likes braised meat

most of the athletes are pretty "obedient" and follow the queue when getting their food (or sth like that). all except for russia's safin, who left a deep impression on the staff on his very first day here. while the other players sat patiently to await the arrival of their meal, safin, who was probably exhausted after his training (yeah...suuuuuurrrrreeeee.) just laid down on the sofa and refused to get up. (muhaahahahhaa..marat rejecting food...that's a first!) with the cold winters in russia, russian cuisine is similar to that of china's northeast. Safin enjoys braised meats, such as beef. Knowing Safin's preferences, Shangri-la's chegs specially prepared steak, and russian bbq-ed beef (i think), which safin happily gobbled up. Safin especailly likes healthy food and must have freshly squeezed juice at every breakfast.

There's another article which talked about what players did in the rainy day, and I just translated the part of Marat.

The source from: http://sports.sina.com.cn/s/2004-09-15/1246367300s.shtml

What did Marat do in rainy day? ¡ª¡ªHe read for relax.

Compared with young Chinese players, the way of pastime of Marat and Srichaphan weren't more mature than that. (Last paragraph the article said: Many Chinese players just chatted or played cards for pastime.) Because these stars always met each other in all kinds of tournaments, they became good friends earlier. Srichaphan's father liked Marat very much obviously. They had a short talk, and then Father left his son Srichaphan aside actually and found a seat beside Marat. They asked for two cups of coffee and had a chat with each other. However, the rest of players felt hopeless when they looked at the weather that didn't have any signs to be sunny outside. So they asked waiter for cards. Srichaphan who was left behind by his father stood behind them and watched them playing. Sometimes he helped making stratagems warmly for players while he was watching.

After chatted with Srichaphan's father, Marat had a short rest leisurely with his right leg raised on a chair. Soon after he took out a thick book from his pack and the book looked very fresh. Marat started to read from the very first page. He was very concentrated and very quiet totally, which made others who wanted to be signed didn't have a heart to disturb him. Until told that the match had been cancelled, Marat left the dining table that he had sat beside all the afternoon.

found a liddle article abt marat. vass told me not to waste my time and just translate the interesting bits, so i'll do just that.

interesting bits: marat says it's still too early to say if he'll win this week. ...to borrow a phrase...wokeej....it's already, thursday so i'm assuming he's talking nonsense. ;D

interesting bit 2: marat was asked to compare the russian gals and guys. he admits that the gals are currently more dominating and in the limelight. but he feels that the guys too, HAVE AMBITION.

that's all.

oh. and stats from the bogomolov jr match. apparently, marat had 10 aces and 87% first serve. vass thinks he must've been serving at 170kmph.

found an article. dina and rausa went to watch marat yesterday.

and...i'm too lazy to do the full translation so i'll just pick the impt parts.

http://www.tennis.com.cn/news/domestic/20040918/5833.asp

marat's now considered the hot favourite.
at the press conf, he said he just wanted to grab whatever time he had to eat and sleep so as to rest b4 today's semis.

he says he's glad the match was a quick one. and he's confident and glad that his technique was of a high standard in the match. on kim: he feels that kim played well and kim beating juanqui showed he had lots of confidence which is very impt for any athlete to have. on juanqui: he says juanqui's had a bad year and was really unlucky.

on nieminen: marat recalls having played him a few times. and recalls having loss at least once. but nieminen's had a change of coach and was out for 3 mths after inuring himself in monte carlo. maratik feels he has to go into the match with confidence.

on the tournament having lost most of it's top seeds: maratik feels it's not unusual and that one's ranking doesn't assure one of a direct ticket to winning.

dinara and rausa were at the training session and the match. maratik didn't feel any pressure cos of their presence. on lundgren: "i was looking for a coach and he'd just parted ways with federer. he's brought with him new ideas and experience which makes me very happy. and he's a truly good coach"

on the tight security: maratik's a little exasperated but says he can't do anything abt it as it's the organiser's decision.

maratik ends by thanking the fans for turning out even thought he weather was kinda cold. and winning in front of his supporters was a great feeling for him.

Safin gains first title in two years
9/19/04 2:07 PM

BEIJING (AP) _ Marat Safin won his first title in two years, beating Mikhail Youzhny 7-6 (4), 7-5 Sunday in an all-Russian final.

Safin, a former U.S. Open champion who has been struggling since an injury-plagued 2003, advanced to No. 8 in the world and increased his chances of qualifying for the Masters Cup.

Safin, seeded fifth, had been without a title since the 2002 Paris Indoors. But he sailed through this tournament without losing a set despite playing five matches in four days because of rain postponements.

He dropped his first service game and initially seemed puzzled by his opponent's variety of shots. But after gaining a break point at 3-4, Safin capitalized and was in command in the tiebreaker with four aces and five consecutive points.

Safin fell behind in his first service of the second set but recovered to win the game. Youzhny inexplicably crumbled at 5-5, losing serve with a double-fault. Safin served out the match, acing the final point.

Safin earned $69,200 and Youzhny $40,700.

Penny has found yet another article on chinaopen.com.cn the chinese version.
penny has taken the liberty to translate it for all the Safinettes and Safinous out there. Penny hopes everyone likes it.
____________________________________

Before last night’s mens’ final, the cry at the ticketing booth was “Come see Safin!!!!” At the packed stadium last night, the crowd was obviously on Safin’s side. The calls of “Come on Safin!!” energized Safin who after the match, acknowledged the crowd with a bow. He also tossed his white shirt and wrist band into the crowd. “Competing here makes me feel as if I’m competing at home. I’d like to thank the crowd for supporting me.”

Although there were a few Russians in the crowd last night who were waving the Russian flag and cheering on Safin and Youzhny in turn, it did not prevent the Chinese crowd from cheering on their “leading guy”, Safin. Some cheered in English and others cheered in Chinese, disregarding the fact that their idol probably did not understand them.

The players might not understand the language, but applause is a universal language. When Youzhny played a good shot, the applause was polite, but when Safin played well, the crowd would go wild with applause. The “prejudice” of the crowd, made Youzhny a little “jealous”. “This is the first time I’ve experienced how having the crowd on your side can be a crucial factor in winning the match. However, I know that the Chinese crowd understand tennis. When I played well in the 2nd set, they cheered me on, except that they were not quite accurate in pronouncing my name. Next time, I’ll play even better and make them remember me.”

Towards the crowd, Safin’s reward was to present them with his shirt and wrist band. Safin’s goodwill towards the China Open was also increased and he said, “I hope to come back next year and relive all this.”

here's the most important bit of the article. in case babelfish is driving u nuts.

"If not for this win, I would probably have continued my slide and would probably never return to my peak condition. In this tournament, I beat a few strong opponents in a row, which allowed me to start taking note of myself again. I discovered, to my surprise that my technique was still there and that i could still be a threat. This win didn't just bring glory, it also brought me confidence."

FINALLY shows us that he's concerned abt his career. PHEW!

By Alastair Himmer

BEIJING (Reuters) - A resurgent Marat Safin could emerge as the best hope to challenge Roger Federer's stranglehold on men's tennis -- with a little insider help.

The Russian giant won his first tournament in almost two years with a battling 7-6 7-5 victory over compatriot Mikhail Youzhny in the China Open final at the weekend.

Safin, who briefly topped the world rankings after capturing the 2000 U.S. Open, paid tribute to his Swedish coach Peter Lundgren after breaking a 22-month title drought in Beijing.

Lundgren guided world number one Federer to his first grand slam title at Wimbledon last year before they parted company in December. He has been working with Safin since April.

"This is my first title with Peter, hopefully it won't be our last together," said a tearful Safin. "It's not party time because I won."

While his talent has never been in question, Safin's work ethic has been called into doubt before.

The tempestuous Russian escaped a fine despite saying he gave up during his first-round defeat at this year's Wimbledon.

Safin created an unwanted slice of history at the 2000 Australian Open, when he became the first player to be fined for tanking, or not trying, at a grand slam tournament.

The 24-year-old, known as "Big Red" for his booming serves and imposing presence, insisted he was prepared to knuckle down and keep his famous temper in check under Lundgren.

"I know that it doesn't help me at all to get crazy with myself on the court," said Safin. "In the past sometimes I did that, threw my racket or whatever. It's no good."

FIERY TEMPERAMENT

Lundgren also coached former number one Marcelo Rios, another player with a fiery temperament.

"Lundgren worked with Rios," joked Safin. "If he can deal with Rios, then he can understand me."

Safin, who slid out of the top 50 last year after an injury-plagued season, played with a steely determination in China. Not one racket was smashed in anger.

He did not drop a set in Beijing and fought fire with fire in a pulsating final against fellow Muscovite Youzhny.

His hunger back, Safin edged above Andre Agassi into eighth spot in the ATP Champions Race after claiming his 12th title.

For now, Safin has set his sights on being one of the eight players to qualify for the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Houston.

But he warned that he could be ready to launch a real challenge to Federer in 2005.

"This year, Federer is playing incredible," said Safin, who was beaten by the all-conquering Swiss in the Australian Open final at the start of the year.

"But next year, who knows? He has to keep this level and a lot of players want to beat him and be number one. Maybe me too."

Certainly, nobody -- not Safin, Agassi or Andy Roddick -- could stop Federer in 2004 as he became the first man to win three grand slam titles in a year since Swede Mats Wilander in 1988.

With his confidence restored and his power clearly undiminished, Safin could be a serious threat to Federer next year.

"It feels great to be back," said Safin. "You forget the feeling (of winning). But I have the motivation now to work hard. I want to try to work hard and keep this feeling."

OK, here is sth what I can remember about the final of china open. sorry for my poor english... :worship:

at the 1st game, Mikhail was very lucky. the ball touched the net and bounced into Marat's court. with couple of thus scores, Mikhail
broke Marat's serving. but Marat was calm. he tried to broke back and served perfectly in his own serve. and then, he held a chance
to broke Mikhail. finally, it is tiebreak. at the key point Marat made a winner by a forehand and compelled Mikhail to make a mistake.
then he held his 2 serves and led 6-2. Mikhail was very obstinate. he won following 2 scores. then Marat ended the 1st set with a pretty
serve. at the 2nd set, there was sth wrong with Marat's 1st serve, so he was nearly broken by Mikhail at least twice. luckily his serve
always helped him at key point. Mikhail did very well in every aspects, returning, passing shot, slice shot even volley. he also made few mistakes and had well timing. in some games, Marat even did not dare to make winners. but Marat was waiting patiently and searching the chance to broke Mikhail. ultimately, at the 11th games Mikhail wanted to made a perfect forehand winner but it was out. Marat got a breakpoint. then Mikhail made a double fault. Marat led 6-5. at the final game, it was also the serve that helped Marat to win. virtually, Mikhail played very well in the match. his performance was impressive. but at the pivotal moment, he made the vital mistakes. while Marat should attribute his victory to his calm and patience.

i have another question: june, was his groundgame more close to his best, was he going for his shots all the time?
at the us open against enqvist it was really painful, but its all a question of marats confidence.

junekidd
09-22-2004, 05:00 PM
oh....sorry, andrea... the link works for me... I do not know what is the problem... maybe cos it is a chinese website...
u know, I think though he won this title, he still could be more close to his best. his shots were strong enough. the groundgame was also perfect. but mikhail always could return the ball . marat's timing had sth wrong too. mikhail was more aggressive and had more variety. he always changed the route before marat and did not make many errors. so the match looked like mikhail's match more. but marat had better patience.

hope u could understand...

Shadow
09-22-2004, 05:23 PM
ok thanks.
Thats not what i wanted to hear lol. Marat needs to play his agressive baseline game and mix it up, thats his game. Waiting for the error and let the other guy play is not Marat`s game at all, but he doesn`t have the confidence for it now, i hope he can now he won finally the title.

junekidd
09-22-2004, 05:48 PM
yeah, he should be more aggressive and improve his volley. in fact, in the final, he did not play perfectly, but well enough. he did not make many errors too. while mikhail was outstanding! he had 27 winners compared with 22 of marat. whereas, finally marat won and got more confidence. that is enough. we can reckon on him for more. I hope he could better and better, then to be his best! ;)

A belated congrats to Marat on his china win! Bout time, eh? anyway, great to see Marat back in the winners circle...he's not the only one who missed that winning feeling!
Now don’t go another two years before your next title, k? j/k we all know he’s going to win Bangkok, right? ;)

hey I didn't come yet to CONGRATULATE Marat on his fantastic unbelievable out of this world win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so happy, I don't think I can describe just how happy I am for him to win a title again!! He must be soooo happy, the feelings he must be feeling, I can only imagine......after lossing for such a long time and maybe starting to get frustrated with tennis....finally his BIG DAY comes along!!!

I hope many more to come Marat, many more happy days with lots more titles!!!

You just know he is a one of a kind guy,....... he is special, he has a heart of gold.
