OK Let the rollercoaster begin - since it's been left to a jinxer to start the thread, don't expect too much from Gillou
(Did you see what I did there?)

First up Marseille. The draw is out
http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2010/496/mds.pdf

Gillou is in Jo's quarter, R1 against Ollie Rochus.

I only edited the title.
I see what you did there is defined in Urban dictionary http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=I%20see%20what%20you%20did%20there but on this occasion I was using it to show that I'd laid a cunning anti jinx by jinxing Gilles twice (once by starting the thread, twice by saying don't expect too much). Sorry for any confusion caused!

I hadn't seen this article in La Provence (the local newspaper) on Friday:
http://www.laprovence.com/article/tous-sports/tennis-gilles-simon-retrouve-le-chemin-des-courts

He says he felt the pain in his knee before RG for the first time. And he's been playing through the pain since then. Sometimes it was bearable, sometimes it was unbearable.
He had an MRI on last Thursday and the lesion now is very small. Loads of players play with this kind of injuries.
He now has 3 times more strength in his right leg than in 2007.
Being less muscular than many players also is a strength of his anyway (exactly, I hope he hasn't gained too much muscular mass because they often lose speed then, it was my first thought by reading the articles on Friday about all the body-building!)
He's not worried about the state of his game. He just can't wait to be able to play at full speed again.
Maybe it will turn out that this comeback in Marseille is too early, but it's not a problem, it will just mean he needs 2 more weeks of training then. If he feels pain, it will be because an inflammation of the sinew, but not because of the lesion. He insists that he can't injure himself again at this stage.
The 3 months off were not hard to take. He had never had a break in 5 years, always moving up in the rankings. So having 3 months off is not the end of the world. It gave him the chance to do exercises he can't do otherwise.
He says it's also a money matter when they play tournaments every week at the risk of getting injured. Not only the prize money, but the guarantees. It applies to himself too, let's be honest. It would be a good thing to take 3 weeks off 2 or 3 times a season. The current calendar allows this.

I'm no medical expert... But he can always injure himself when he isn't injured to begin with, so how is it that he can be sure that he won't get more injured after he's already injured :p. Anyhow, he's playing, let's hope all is good for him. I saw that he is still having that knee bandaged in training, for precaution I hope, which I think is probably a good idea. Good luck Gilles.

Thanks Fran, for the article and translate.

In L'Equipe today:

On y va mollo.
Je me sens anormalement fatigué.
VINCENT COGNET (avec J. Re.)

The summary of the article in L'Equipe with the description of the last 2 weeks, it really goes in great detail!

01.02: he eventually picks up the racquet. The first trainings are very soft, in one part of the court only, Tulasne just plays the ball to him. He plays 45 minutes a day, 1 hour after 3 days...
Before each training session he spends 45 minutes working on his knee with a special machine, ConTrex, incredibly helpful, it's reassuring for him and it gives him confidence.

04.02: he starts running right-left-right again on the court, but no serves and no returns yet.

08.02 (= last Monday): so far he's stuck with the schedule he was supposed to follow. They decide to push him a little bit more. He plays his first points, serving and returning (fast) normally. In the evening, he has an ultrasound scan: everything is looking fine! He says he's feeling much better than when he tried to resume the training on the 1st of January anyway.
He plays 2 hours against Mahut and 30 minutes working on his returning game.

10.02: no training, he feels a bit sick. Does he have a fever? He doesn't want to know: "I refuse to be sick. I won't change my schedule. The point is to test my knee during those 2 weeks, not my health."

12.02 (= last Friday): the doc, Montalvan, gave him the green light yesterday evening, and it means much to him because Montalvan is known for being very cautious.
First real training match on Thursday against Recouderc, Gilles won 6-4 6-3.
Then Ouanna today, Gilles wins 6-4 6-3 too.
He has made his decision, he will play Marseille. Tulasne: "Gilles is so eager to play again and the doc was so happy with the last results that there's no reason to not play."

13.02: a training set won 6-3 against Rufin in the morning in RG, and then he takes the train to Marseille in the afternoon. Room service for dinner to get back into the rhythm of the tournaments, Tulasne explains.

14.02 (= Sunday): first time he allowed himself to sleep in since he has resumed the training. Then he plays 45 minutes with Clément and same with Llodra.

15.02: 90 minutes training with Stakhovsky. Tulasne: "Gilles really has a very good feeling. All the other coaches find he's in great shape. I have never seen him so refreshed mentally and so eager to play. He's smiling all the time."

Truc

You didn't miss much. The scoreline is flattering imo, his game was painful to watch.

Even if he didn't have big expectations, he's disappointed by his performance, he says he was playing better in training and he couldn't show it at all tonight. Probably the tension of his first official match:
http://www.fft.fr/open13/2010/?ID=5947
He wishes he would have been able to enjoy himself on the court tonight and he didn't because he wasn't playing as well as he was hoping. It was just a big struggle, physically and mentally.
The good news is that the knee didn't bother him at all. But that's the only good news of this match.
In the middle of the first set, when he saw that he wasn't able to play the way he wanted it, he decided to just try to keep the ball in play, so he was running a lot then, and even then the knee wasn't an issue at all.
He isn't ruling out to play in Davis Cup, even if he admits it will be very tough...

It was just a big struggle, physically and mentally.

So it should be. It's the first time in 5 years that he has an injury timeout for that long, 3.5 months. I think he didn't know what he's dealing with until when he's dealing with it today. So now he knows, it's not easy, but he shouldn't be too hard on himself . Like I said, eagerness doesn't translate into form, rust is expected, better day will come, hopefully soon.

Truc
02-16-2010, 10:28 PM
Gilles should of never rushed back so soonBut he didn't come back because he thought he was ready.
He came back to see where he is at. He's said it often enough in the two dozens of interviews he's given since Friday.

And he saw that the gap between what he's doing in training and a real match is even bigger than he thought.
He's disappointed by his game, not by the fact that he lost.

He's always been very clear about that and the expectations. I couldn't believe it when I saw the odds before this match!

I know I was expecting better, and hence a bit disappointed (and feeling guilty about it being such a demanding fan :o). But I don't feel sad that he lost. I'm always happy to read that he know exactly what went wrong and knows what he needs to do next. The important thing is not to panic and seeing this is just his first match coming back, there's no reason to panic anyway.

When the draw came out, I mistaken that he drawn Christoph, not Olli, so I was more optimistic than I should be :o. But I too was very surprised by the odds.

Simon fails to raise his game on return from injury (AFP)
http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5iZX18nlL1I0Gc0YlKT8-Ry4mLFZg

MARSEILLE, France — France's Gilles Simon failed to make a winning return after being out with a knee injury since last November here on Tuesday as he was beaten 7-5, 6-2 by Belgian journeyman Olivier Rochus in the first round of the ATP Open 13.

The 25-year-old Frenchman - ranked 16 in the world - looked to be short of 100percent match fitness against his 29-year-old opponent, ranked a modest 58.

Rochus, though, played a perfect almost error-free match staying back and serving effectively.

Simon, winner of six ATP tournaments, said that he had struggled physically to stay on terms with his resilient rival.

"That was a very difficult match," admitted Simon, whose best showing in a Grand Slam was reaching the quarter-finals of the 2009 Australian Open.

"I was really suffering physically. But that's how it goes, what is imperative for my own best interests is not to rush myself back and to take it step by step.

"And that will be not only by practising often, but also playing matches like the one this evening (Tuesday).

"I tried my best, to fight for every point, and then all of a sudden I felt tired.

"However, Olivier also played really well and was really solid. In terms of the intensity of the match, I simply was not up to it, it was too difficult."

This of course is really positive as well. I appreciate the fact that he's willing to play for the sake of testing where he's at even though he knows he's not fully ready. I think a lot of players would resist doing so and delay things to attempt to avoid any sort of embarrassment or shot toward their ego.

In L'Equipe today:
– J. Re.
He lost, but no reason to panic: 1. Rochus did a good job and 2. the knee held up. Gilles says he's a bit disappointed he wasn't able to enjoy it, he was tight when he entered the court, it was hard to stay focused, which usually comes naturally.
Oli says that Gilles sometimes was making several errors in a row and it's unusual for him.
Tulasne says it was interesting to watch how he dealt with the tension. Tension = no fluidity = less control of his shots, and he was dominated. It's normal. "I can not not be disappointed, but it was to be expected..."
He goes back to Paris today and leaves for Dubai tomorrow already.

Gilles attended the draw ceremony, there's pics in the website http://www.barclaysdubaitennischampionships.com/Multimedia/Photo-Landing.aspx

An article:
http://gulfnews.com/sport/tennis/all-eyes-on-possible-federer-murray-rematch-1.585990

Meanwhile, Frenchman Gilles Simon is hoping to make a winning return to the ATP Men's Tour when he takes on former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis in the first round of the men's contest at the 2010 Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships that get under way tomorrow.

Simon, who was one of the important people attending the draw ceremony for the ATP Men's Open yesterday, told Gulf News that he hoped to stay injury(I think not :p) and carry forward his career in tennis.

"I will just try to focus on the first round and see how things are headed from then on," Simon stated.

Irritating lesion

An irritating lesion on the right knee tendon has kept the Frenchman, now ranked No 16 in the world, out of competition till now. Simon did play at the Marseille Open earlier this month, but with very little success.

"I need to get as many matches as I can before I can start setting realistic goals for myself," he shrugged.

Should Simon make it past two rounds, his reward will be a meeting against fourth seed and 2009 ATP World Tour Final winner Nikolay Davydenko of Russia in the quarterfinals.

After a final round of qualifiers today, the main draw action will get under way from Monday with play being held in two sessions at 2pm and 7pm at the Dubai Tennis Stadium.

I think it's a school holiday period in France, maybe he's just on holiday with his family or something.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Food poisoning could not stop Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis from defeating eighth seed Gilles Simon 7-6 6-4 in the first round of the Dubai tennis championships on Monday.
"I was concentrating on not throwing up on court," the 24-year-old said. "I was suffering from food poisoning and had cramps in my stomach."
After the first nine games went with serve, the stricken former Australian Open runner-up left the court at 4-5 down, with the score at 40-15, before returning to serve out the game and then immediately break the Frenchman, who was struggling with a chest injury. (???)
Simon responded, breaking back to force a tie-break, but the world number 18 hit a series of unforced errors and allowed Baghdatis to take it 7-3.
At 4-5 in the second set, Simon saved a match point with a delicate drop shot but Baghdatis was not to be denied as his opponent hit a wide forehand to gift the world number 37 the match.
"I had many opportunities but every time I was close I just did too many mistakes," said Simon. "The last game he didn't have to do anything, (I) just did four mistakes."

Now that they say that, I remember indeed he put his hand on his heart after a long rallye. It was an unusual gesture from him. I thought he was just out of breathe, but maybe he was signalling that he was in pain? Or the journalist misunderstood his gesture?

As for Baggy, he was clearly ill, yes. He looked very relieved to have won in that condition, he even kissed the court after the match although it wasn't that close.
Gilles was much better than last week, but it wasn't a very good match with Marcos physically struggling and Gilles still very shaky at key moments.

I uploaded the highlights in the video thread.

02-22-2010, 04:23 PM
Thanks Fran:) I hope that it was just an out of breath gesture that Gilles made at that moment, rather than feeling pain in that area!:scared:

Looks like its gonna take a while yet for Gilles to find a good level*sigh*

So Tulasne's not there? I was wondering about that myself, but I thought the trainer would be there and I didn't see him, so I thought I probably miss them sitting somewhere else. But the camera focused on his mom unusually often, maybe bcos he has no one there with him but his mom?

I saw that part he put his hand on his chest too, it's a very unusual gesture for him, but I didn't think of anything. Marcos got sick and went to the bathroom, and I thought that broke his concentration, since he already mentioned he had problem keeping focus, that's a long break for him to maintain that (at one pt he smiled while sitting down, not a good sign, totally makes me think that his eyes caught something at the stand and he got distracted). Afterward, his FH went flying all over. I think he still played rather good considering, except not handling the big points well enough, the last game was :help: (saved that one S&V point that fought off a mp). He probably needs some confidence to start playing the big point better. Now we'll have to wait for another 2 weeks before he gets back into action....unless he got picked for DC , which is very unlikely anyway.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/tennis/top-stories/Gilles-Simons-losing-streak-lengthens/articleshow/5604308.cms

Simon's biggest problem is a tendon in the right knee which is not regenerating, which means that, after a three month lay-off, he has been practising for just 20 days.

That is creating problems for other parts of the body, unused to the stress, and he had a pain in his side which inhibited his service action.

Another article:
http://www.monstersandcritics.com/sport/tennis/article_1535591.php/Gutsy-Baghdatis-sucks-ups-stomach-cramps-to-reach-Dubai-second-round-1st-Lead

I must work a lot to be stronger all the muscles around. I've only been practising 15, 20 days after three months of rest.

'Of course it showed. That's why even with the knee I had so many problems everywhere on the body. But it's not a problem. It's going to disappear when I get used to it.'

Well, looks like his body just hasn't get used to the workload. Probably nothing to concern about, he doesn't sound too concern either. And he was really playing well after trailing 0-3 in the 2nd, so I don't think it was a physical issue anyway.

Tulasne is there, don't worry - or don't raise your hopes.

In L'Equipe today:

A summary:

The journalist compares him with somebody who is riding a bike and then starts thinking about what he needs to do to move forward - it doesn't work then.
Gilles: "My first match in Marseille was very ugly. I was tight during the whole match. This time it was better. But when the pressure increases, I don't play naturally anymore. I'm thinking too much about what I've done and what I have to do. I'm continuously saying to myself: 'Calm down, take a deep breath" or 'Watch your stances' or 'Move more into the court'. I don't play the way it comes naturally to me." And it shows.
The knee is almost fine now, but he's still paying off for the training time he's missed. "It's a vicious circle: I want to overdo it in training to make up for it, but the next day my buttock muscles are completely stiff or my abs are on fire."
Marcos was beatable yesterday. But he stopped missing at key moments, unlike Gilles. "Let's be honest: I'm not able yet to hit the right shot when I need it."
Tulasne is not worried: "There were 8 chances out of 10 that this would happen. After 3 months off the tour, even Nadal and Federer would have problems. I have zero doubt: Gilles will recover his level. The only real question is: when?" Definitely not in Toulon in 10 days. So the next try will be Indian Wells.
Yesterday's match wasn't exactly memorable. Gilles broke back twice, at 6-5 in the first set and 3-1 in the 2nd. But it wasn't enough to mask the problems, especially his serve which was surprisingly weak (first serves around 180 km/h average): "My abs have been hurting for 2 days, he explains. I'd love to give everything in training, but I can't. My body isn't used to it anymore. I still haven't been able to have two practice sessions in the same day. I wanted to do it on Friday, but I had to cancel because I couldn't lift my arm up after the training session in the morning."
"Davydenko told me: 'Gilles, you come back a tad too early. You should have waited for Monte-Carlo like I did last year.' Nikolay missed the first 4 months because of an injury in 2009. And he ended the year winning a Masters 1000 in Shanghai and the Masters Cup."
And then he mentions again all the muscle-development exercises he's done during the last monthes: "I'll be able to serve harder. And I can also feel that it is helpful for my forehand."
