Considering MVA is in the qualifying draw, both Kubot and Mello asked for a SE spot in the main draw.

Guido Pella vs J.Souza in the stream
J.Souza is the favourite but maybe Pella stands a chance? he had an acceptable performance on Santiago qualies

Hi fellow tennis fans,

I attended today the first round of the quallies of the Telmex Cup and I`m going to do it tomorrow too. So .I`m dropping some lines with my experience over those two days.

The first match I saw was Joao Souza and Guido Pella. Both players impressed me as they have great strokes. Two left handed players with a quite similar style of playing, good baseline strokes and serve too, Both of them tend to make a lot of unforced mistakes but Pella has a really bad attitude on court as he tends to give up easily when things are not going well. Souza has the game to be on the top 100 if he can learn to play with a smarter strategies. Pella can easily reach at least the challenger tour if he change his attitude on court.. Pella played very well the first set while Souza did it on the second. In the third set Pella dramatically declined his level and when he wanted to return back to the match was too late. Well deserved victory for the Brazilian.

The second match I saw was between Agustin Velotti and Leonardo Tavares. Tavares has great weapons on his forehand and backhand and a powerful serve too. But he tend to make a lot of mistakes when he is moved around the court.. On the other hand, Vellotti is the traditional claycourt counterpouncher. He has good strokes even on his forehand and double backhanded. He needs to improve his serve and attacking game but one positive thing is his attitude on court. Tavares is not a bad player but needs to improve his movements around the court. Well deserved victory for the unexperienced Argentine teenager that never gave up.

The third match that I attended was between Massu and Volandri. Volandri is trying to return to his former level and today he proved that he still has the shots to do it. He stroked so many backhand winners and his serve and forehand were consistent enough. Great attitude on court too. Massu was not on his best days. He made a lot of unforced errors and strategically he didn`t play a smart match either. It`s really sad to see Massu struggling with himself and to see him time by time far away of the player he used to be. He was so frustrated with himself that it seemed to be in the end that today he would have prefered to be somewhere else and not on the court if he had that chance.
I think it was a big mistake to put that match on a secondary court , especially considering that Massu was a former winner and Volandri former runner up of this tournament. Another great desicion of those ones that Jaite is taking year after year.

The last match I saw was between Bagnis and Berlocq. I could only see the first set as I had to leave but Berlocq was dominating Bagnis. I know now that Bagnis won and hopefully I will see more of him tomorrow to say a bit more about his game.

Early in the morning I watch on TV Del Bonis beating Vassallo, who made so many unforced mistakes, especially considering that he sets his strategies over the plan of trying to avoid mistakes and forcing the opponent to make them.

I hope you enjoy the reports

Cheers

Fran.

Today I attended the 2nd round of the quallies where I saw the following matches:

Brzezicki with Del Bonis: Del Bonis made mistakes of all kind of colours and Brzezicki just forced Federico to produce them. Such a day to forget for Del Bonis.

Souza with Hocevar: It was the first time that I was able to see Hocevar. He is a player with a solid shots. Good serve, forehand and two handed backhand. Solid from the baseline. And he goes just from time to time to the net. Nothing extraordinary or big weapons to remark but doesn`t make many unforced mistakes. Both players seemed ro respect each other too much. Souza has better weapons but he was trying not to make many mistakes. He seemed to feel unconfortable with Hocevar`s game. I`d just seen the first set that Souza won 7-6.

Martin with Ungur: It was the first time I`d seen Ungur and there`s nothing extraordinary to remark of him. Martin was in control of the match all the time and just put some more pressure a couple of times to break Ungur`s serve to win 6-4 6-4

Volandri with Cipolla: It was the first time I`d seen Cipolla. Volandri was not as solid as yesterday. Cipolla has a horrible serve. His forehand is just ok but he has an amazing slice backhand, very good hands and is really fast. Cipolla changed rythms all the time in the first set and won 6-4. Then Volandri took full control of the 2nd set. The third set was not good at all. Lots of unforced mistakes and players broke their serves several times with Volandri wasting many chances to close the match earlier. Finally Volandri managed to win the third set 6-4.

I`d just regret not to see the match where Bagnis beated Ramirez Hidalgo. To be honest I underestimated Bagnis chances and fortunately I was wrong ;)

I have some pics and videos of the first set that I will upload during the week. Last night I forgot to charge the battery of my camera and I found it out in he tournament... :(

I already have tickets for the semifinals so I may drop some lines next Saturday again.
