Fastest forehands?

Hey guys (and girls), i don't know if this thread exists already, but i was wondering what are the fastest forehands that top players ever hit?? I know Monfils hit one at 118 mph ( 190 kph), but what are the speeds of Fed, Nadal, Djokovic, Gonzalez, Del Potro, Soderling, Tsonga, Berdych...?

Serve - Andy Roddick - 155 mph - Is anyone surprised that Roddick broke this record?
=u0mdpsj3lJE

Forehand - Gael Monfils - 120 mph - Monfils usually uses lots of top spin on his forehand, but this shows how potent his forehand is when he flattens it out.
=UJ5fS0EHr9Q

Backhand - David Nalbandian - 110 mph
=XphTboHQLtA&feature=related

Overhead - Andy Roddick - 180ish mph

Well, i wouldn't count out Blake or Berdych... But anyway, i was wondering what are exact speeds of the fastest forehands that top players hit? I'm sure someone here would know...

He definitely does not hit them the fastest consistently.. Obviously he can lay the ball almost harder than anyone of the tour, but problem is, the ball has the be at a good height. I mean players such as Gonzalez, Verdasco, Blake, etc in their primes probably hit the ball fastest consistently.

I don't buy any of the numbers listed, except for the Roddick serve.

There is no way that Monfils hit a 118 mph forehand.

I've seen Nadal and Del Potro both hit around 108-110 mph forehands....the number is probably very close to 110.

I've seen it before. I don't buy it....it was probably the serve speed. If he could hit it that hard....it'd have happened more than once ever. Or we'd at least be seeing him hit some 110-115....I don't recall ever seeing it happen though.

But that isn't his style of play. He was feeling it in that match, and the ball was at the perfect height. I mean he flattened it as flat as you can possibly hit the ball. Hitting the ball over 100 MPH takes perfect timing, and the ball has to be in the perfect height and distance from you.

You know, they do clock groundstrokes many times, especially at the Australian Open. 118 is fast, but I mean, just because you think the ball should a lot faster than what the video depicts if it was actually 118 doesn't mean it isn't 118. Have you see player level camera work of players serving in the 120s? It isn't much faster looking than Gael's forehand in that video. I honestly believe that he did hit it 190 KM/H.

I remember Fed hitting one at 107 mph (173 kmh) against Benneteau in Cincy 2007... Tried to find it on youtube, but i couldn't, sorry. And that Djokovic' one against Tsonga, that's got to be around 110mph! It looked like a bullet...

Djokovic can pull off extreme high risk bullet like forehands whenever he's pissed off thanks to his flexibility and extended rotation. I believe the two hardest forehands he's ever struck were both from playing Tsonga. The one shown on youtube here, and the one at Queens. He lost both matches but in Queens even the commentators were laughing after they saw it, as it was from sheer anger bash with the speed clocking up to 189km/hr.

It can, but it needs perfect motion and alignment which is not the case here. It's for sure not faster than the fastest serve.

I watched that match from Queens, and i remember that commentators sad it was exactly 100mph (162kmh).
But the one from Tsonga match, that's got to be faster, somewhere between 170-180 kmh.

Could it be that 182 km/h serve speed meter shown at the end of the clip is the speed of the serve on which Blake hit the return winner? To me his return definitely appears faster than the serve (not saying it has to be).

I even saw Kohlschreiber hit something like a 180kph forehand once. Of course it helped that it was off a short ball that only landed about 2m from the net.

Monfils is capable of hitting his forehand very hard, he just chooses not to do it very often and instead play a defensive game, which is frustrating.

Good point. Blake's forehand definitely looks faster than the serve so if that is the serve speed then it would appear his forehand was faster than 182kph (113mph).

Monfils does have a defensive game....but that doesn't mean that he never takes chances. If you've watched him, he does hit some big, flat shots out of nowhere.

I just have a hard time believing that Monfils, of all people, can hit a forehand 10 mph faster than anyone else on tour. That is a HUGE jump in power....and if he really had that much power, he could even take some pace off for better consistency, and still have the biggest forehand in the game.

And I still haven't seen even 1 other instance in which Monfils has hit even a 105 mph forehand, so I think most can understand what I mean.

Don't know which channel you were watching but the commentators on the channel we saw definitely said 189km/hr. It was a huge bash right ont the sweet spot. Verdasco constantly pulls off 160-165km/hr forehands, and those don't make me jaw drop. But the Queens one from Djokovic certainly did, because it definitely looked much much faster than a 100mph forehand.

Watch Courier, he barely have landed after the serve ;) The slidemark seems to be about half a meter...

I also remeber such an enormous forehand return by Patrick Kuhnen against Lendl back in the 80:s. Unfortunately I haven't found a vid of that one.
