Things federer has left to achieve?

With fed now having almost every record in tennis under his belt worth getting what are some of the big achievements he is missing?

-CYGS, could be the year this year? who knows but its very unlikely for any player getting anywhere near in the modern game. Feds come close 3 or 4 times now (04,06,07,09) but has dropped in the finals once or twice, with a weakened Nadal at RG and no signs of RF stopping this has to be his best chance yet.

-Most weeks at no1, this will come and go like nothing, its almost a given. Unless fed has a total blowout and loses in the first round of a slam this year, he is going to take this one easily.

-Olmypic Gold. A tough one, 2012 is a while away yet, fed will be in the twilight of his career; and with the younger guys improving constantly this will be a tough one.

-8 Wimbledons, 5 AO's to stand alone at the top of these 2 trees will be a big ask also, he has it in him to win wimbledon till his legs fall off, but 2 more at 28 is a tough ask. This year hes going to be the big favourite, but next year? Same goes for the AO?

What do you think are federers chances of achieving these feats? Any other big records that come to mind?

He aready has Oly gold so thats the main thing.

CYGS would be the only one he needs, that and beat Nadal in any carnation at Roland Garros and he is the GOAT NO QUESTION.

i dunno :( good point 03, Olympic singles is one of his BIG things he wants though, he was as happy as when he got his second slam at AO as when he got doubles, the singles would be akin to him getting that first one i reckon :D

Winning DC? I mean, Wawrinka isn't the best thing around, but the 2 could make a respectable team...

the Master Series titles probably this year he can achieve.
the ATP titles would be an interessing one.

too hard to say. a thread like this would have been unthinkable 9 months ago. things change fast indeed.

right now the only thing that seems likely is the record of weeks at number 1...

The thing with the DC is that Fed just doesn't care much about it... Besides, it's a team sport. I'd love to see Fed taking it more seriously, though, even if it means skipping a tournament every now and then.

As for the MS, Fed doesn't seem to care much either but at least he still plays them. Considering that he's only 1 MS away from tieing Agassi's record, i think he might break it eventually.

Lastly, the record of ATP titles is just impossible to break... Connors and Lendl won over a hundred. Federer is at 62 i think.

fed would like to win the olympic gold medal in singles (london 2012, and being played at wimbledon) seems like a very good chance of him achieving that, but he will be 31 by then, so lets see how he holds up.

he won the gold medal in doubles with stan in 2008, but i think the gold in singles is what he REALLY wants.

fed does not really seem too fussed with DC, he has a good chance of CYGS this year but alot depends on how rafa performs during the clay season (rafa injured= good chance fed defends FO), he is the favourite at wimbledon, and USO- he has won that 5 times before.

As I said in a recent thread about this, Federer has had great opportunities to fill all the gaps in his career.

French Open 2004 and the CYGS - Gaston Gaudio won. Ridiculous clown GS winner. Federer only had to get past 2004 version of Kuerten.

Olympic Games 2004 - Massu won. Clown Olympic gold medalist. Lost to Birdshit in such a big situation.

Davis Cup 2003 - Federer choked two sets up in the SF and cost Switzerland the chance to play at home for their first DC title.

Winning steak - Lost chance at most matches to Canas in a big victory for dopers everywhere.

1. Win the Calendar Year Grand Slam
2. Win an Olympic Singles Gold Medal
3. Win the Davis Cup

Unfortunately out of those three ambitions it would seem that winning the Davis Cup would be the hardest! If Fed wanted to be considered the best of all time in terms of women as well he could even try winning the Calendar Year Golden Grand Slam in 2012.

When you look back on history and you see Federer was the best tennis player over those years and you look at the Davis Cup champions you wonder why Switzerland never even made it to a final let alone winning the thing.

Facts are he has won every Grand Slam and he has won an Olympic Gold Medal so even if he falls short he still has some what achieved these goals. Just that Davis Cup title eludes him.

He has won the most slam titles, career slam, Olympic gold medal, and most consecutive weeks at the number one (among the numerous other records he has manged to achieve).

Things left to do:
- win RG one more time at least to prove what a legend he is on clay (quite possible)
- win the calendar slam
- most number of weeks at number one position all together (which should happen this June)
- keep winning slams to distance himself from the field (which will happen)
- end the year as world number atleast once more (again possible)
- win the Davis cup for his country

I think most of these records are possible for Federer to achieve.

Difficult things to do:
- Win the CYGS
- End the year as no.1 at least three times more making a total of 8 years as no.1

More realistic objectives:

- win 5 AO (Open era record, he needs one more)
- Win 6 USO (Open era record, he needs one more)
- win 8 Wimbledon (all-time record): needs 2 more but I think he has a decent shot at it.
- win one more FO (it really depends on Rafa and Potro condition at the French)
- win Olympic singles Gold Medal in 2012
- Beat Sampras record of 286 weeks at no. 1

Things I would really want to happen but never will: :)

- Win the Career Grand Slam boxed Set by winning all the Doubles and Mixed Doubles GS. :yeah:

If Federer wins Rome, Monte Carlo and Paris 1000 (Masters) events, he'd be the only player to have won all the 9 different tournaments at least once.

Agaasi is record holder with 7/9. Federer (and Rafa) are at 6.

A few years ago, this seemed a likely objective, now it will be pretty much a miracle if it were to happen.

abraxas21

For some reason I'd really like to see Federer winning Rome more than any other MS right now.

He's made the final two times and was so close to winning... That title has eluded him for too long.

I have a similar feeling. There's a vibe going through my head, and it keeps telling me that he is, in fact, going to achieve the calendar-year grand slam.

Call me out if you want, but there is a decent chance he'll do it.

Beat Nadal in a RG final.
Davis Cup.
Olympic gold in SINGLES.
CYGS.
Total weeks at #1 record.
YE#1 record.
8 Wimbledons to beat Sampras.
5 AO for Open Era record, 7 for all-time record
6 USO for the Open Era Record, 8 for the all-time record.

If he does all that, he is indisputably the best ever.

To come on this board, confront setsampras directly, make him cry so he never returns to post on a tennis forum again.

Then we can truly say hes a legend.

It's true that Fed has "achieved everything" but at the same time he's so close to cross several milestones...

-one more Wimbledon and he's tied to Sampras at 7. Two more and he's the first man to win 8 times a slam.
-one more AO and he has the record in modern tennis.
-one more USO and he has the record in modern tennis.
-if he reaches 2010 RG final, he's the first player to reach 5 consecutive finals there.

It would be a pity if he didn't do any of these things.

Then there's the thing with his hth with Nadal and Murray, which would be a nice bonus.

I don't really think CYGS is important anymore... he has already won everything, and missed only one slam final in 4 years, taking 3 slams/year several times. That's >>>>>> than CYGS in my book.

Good post. =)

In my opinion, everything which comes after the 15th Grandslam is a bonus for Fed. Except the total weeks as number 1.

Meh. CYGS would seal the GOAT discussion by itself. Anything else would be unnecessary.

Consider this. Let's say Federer won the CYGS this year. In the process, he would has tied the record for Wimbledon wins, broken the record for US Open wins, have the weeks at #1 record by far, have 19 slams, and probably have beaten Nadal once or twice in slams along the way.

Nadal h2h is doable if only they would meet often enough in HC tournaments. Long way to make up though.
Murray might actually be tougher. He will turn it around, but soon enough now he will really begin to lose his edge, while Murray is still getting better, so I think he will retire with a negative h2h vs him.

Nadal must be the only player on tour without this thought running through his head (even if he was in feds half i mean), players like hewitt and roddick must just laugh if they see him around there names. strange thought really.
