Federer makes 'joke' about his back

Hi all. I've been reading this forum for years but never felt compelled to post, as you seem to cover most things! But I'd really like your opinion on this Federer press conference from just after his loss at the Paris Masters a few months ago. I appreciate that this was a while back, but the issue in question - his back - is just as relevant now.

At 3.26 in the video, Federer jokes that he's "got to make sure I get my back in shape now on indoors...no I'm kidding." What do you guys make of this? He said this pretty awkwardly, and seemed to regret making the joke as soon as he'd said it! There are many things we could infer from this, or indeed nothing at all. Just keen to see what you think.

Thanks.

It's the end of the world. Death and destruction everywhere. Repent sinners.

Haha hardly! What a whimsical response!

Not whimsical at all. I'm dead serious. When Federer says "got to make sure I get my back in shape now on indoors...no I'm kidding." at 3.26 in a press conference after a loss at the Paris Masters several months ago, it's the end of the world.

Did you actually get any sleep the last couple of months? The burden of this knowledge must be unbearable.

Wow and all these months this piece of highly noteworthy interview was hidden beneath a pile of other trash until you decided to dig it up.
Well done Sherlock, you were the first to catch the Fraud trying to make up an injury excuse and what's more you caught him red-handed.
Among other things i infer from your valuable submission that
YOU HAVE NO LIFE.

Wow a couple of relatively malicious comments... Don't really know what to make of this, I didn't mean to offend anyone!

Don't take MTF too serious. Anyways, welcome to the club :D

Well I agree. We all know Roger Federer is the anti-Christ.

An Anti-Christ with back problems. That's like a Messiah with a sore tooth.

I think there's not much to say about. A normal press conference after a loss.

What's your opinion?

It seemed that he was caught between making an excuse, and realising that nobody cared that he'd lost, so he pulled out halfway by making it into a joke. I was surprised that nothing was said about it at the time, as everything Federer says is analysed in every which way (including things that are far less interesting!)

It has nothing to do with his back.

"I guess I'm a clay court specialist now, indoors is not my surface anymore (laughter) and I've gotta make sure I get my back in shape for indoors... no I'm kidding"

His "back in shape" here meaning "get my act together".

Mad World.....are you seriously telling that is Fed the man who makes up fake injuryes? :haha:

Interesting - that would make much more sense! Just listened to it again, and it still sounds like he says 'my back' (as in, referring to his back, rather than 'to get back in shape') but you could well be right.

:rolls: No back problem, no Anti-Christ, yes 16 Slams.

Infini's explanation seems logical to me. Also, welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay. :)

Yeah I like that explanation, I think it's the best one. Sometimes Federer's words become confused when speaking quickly (in English/French), hence the extra 'my'. Glad I asked the question here, I knew I'd get at least one insightful response!
