Losing against the eventual slam winner- An Open Era overview

Since the Open Era began in 1968, tennis has seen its fair share of champions.
This thread is dedicated to all the players who lost against the players who went on to win a grand slam. From Richard Coulthard, who lost the R32 of the '68 Australian Open to Kei Nishikori, losing finalist at the US Open 2014, no less than 544 different players have been beaten by the eventual champ.

Here's a list with the players who fell to the eventual winner most often:

Poor Hewitt and Henman... So close on home turf, yet so far.

I'm not sure if I'd say poor Lendl. If anything this record is a positive for him - it's a testament to his consistency. When he didn't have enough to win it, he made sure he was at least beaten by the best man.

great thread. unlucky this Henman, possibly the most underrated sportsman of all time. I know that sounds outlandish but someone not in touch with the english media can not possibly comprehend the extent to which he's regarded as the uber-loser.

Thanks for this thread. :worship:

What could be interesting are similar statistics (mostly similar to the 4th post) but which ignore the defeats in the finals (as it would obviously be against the eventual winner :D).

It could really give a hint at which players were underrated. A finalist is not necessarily better than the semi finalist beaten by the future winner.

But with a rapid look, I think Lendl would still be n°1 ;)

Great Post.
Poor Henman and Roddick
I would've thought Nadal would appear somewhere on these lists (at least in the one of the 00s), but I guess he always either won or didn't get to play play the final (against Federer, who was the champion in most cases), except a couple of times. Interesting

A bit of trivia is that in all the 3 RG titles from Guga, Kafelnikov was beaten in the QF. And 2, i guess, he won against Ferrero in the SF (00/01)

Thanks for updating! Unlucky for Gabashvili, but not as bad as Henman and Bjorkman yet when it comes to bad early round draws. :p

-Federer has now lost 12 times to the eventual winner. Three of those losses came against Djokovic in semifinals.
-Davydenko might be one of the best players to never reach a slam final, but he's not at Henmans level. Kolya lost to the eventual US Open winner for the third time.[/QUOTE]

R16: Lleyton Hewitt (13)

-Nadal became the first player in the Open Era to lose three slam finals in a row. Of course, they were all against Djokovic. Nadals name shows up more and more in the lists of this thread.
-In a time span of less than four years, Murray has now lost 7 times against the eventual slam winner. This is almost half of the tournaments played in that period (7/15)! If he continues at this pace, his coach Lendls record might be in danger.
-Ferrer has lost to the eventual winner three times, all of those were quarterfinals.
-Hewitt has lost in the 4th round to the eventual winner 6 times, which is a record. Indication of bad luck at draws or something else? Anyway it's a pretty meaningless, but beautiful stat!
-Nicolas Mahut has lost twice to eventual winner, both were in the third round.

I believe Federer holds the record for "winning or losing to the eventual champion," is it correct? He did it 32 times versus 31 for poor Lendl. Nadal stands at 19

Nope, Federer has 16 slam wins and 12 losses to the eventual winner. That's a total of 28, well short of Lendl who has 31 (8+23).
Nadal has 10 wins and 6 losses.

It's an interesting stat, I might add it in one of the first posts.

How did you come up with 32 for Federer and 19 for Rafa?

I always update this thread a few days after a Grand Slam. If I have time, I update within hours.

-Novak Djokovic lost his third Grand Slam final, two of those to Nadal. This is also the fourth time Nadal defeats Djokovic en route to a Roland Garros title.
-Ferrer lost to the eventual winner for the second time in a row (this is the first time it didn't happen in a quarterfinal).
-Almagro lost to Nadal in the RG quartfinals for the third time (2008, 2010, 2012 an even year pattern).
-Dennis Istomin is why this thread is fun. He lost (early) to eventual winners 3 times. He lost the 1st round of the 2006 AO to Federer and lost in the second round to Nadal at the 2010 US Open and 2012 Roland Garros. If he won't go down in history for his career achievements, he'll live on in this thread as the player with the worst luck at draws!

That also makes a quartet of the big four. Well played, Berdych!
-Both of Cilic losses came in the quarterfinal. He also lost the 2009 US Open quarterfinal against Del Potro. New rule: if you want to win your first slam, beat Cilic in the quarterfinals!
-Dodigs two losses came in the second round.
-Bogomolov has lost to the eventual winner twice, both times in the first round. The first time this happened? Australian Open 2004 against Federer! God, I love this thread!
