I have heard that because of their diversity and equal opportunity program, it makes universities look good if they have lots of women faculty. So I have heard that the probability of being selected for a position is atleast 1:10 for women. But I haven't any experience myself so it might be exaggerated:shrug:

Oh yeah, women would definitely have an advantage in engineering fields. Out of curiosity though...why a professorship for engineering? It's not a common one for academic pursuits, is it?

Well, scratch that, there is a ton of funding for it.

Naples is a scary place to be. If it will get them where they want to go faster people won't think twice about driving on the pavement or running a red light. Plus in much of the city there isn't really a pavement anyway, you just have to hug the streetside houses.

Well that and the garbage strikes, means it stinks as well. At the same time there are rules in theory, yes driving in Italy does require nerves of steel.

The annoying thing with the London Underground is to hear the "miiiiiind the gap" every 10 seconds

I wouldn't mind if some people fell down the gap, though that would make the services even later.

Nadal answered some questions in today's blog. Apparently Almagro has a video of Youzhny hitting himself on his head stored in his iphone:haha:

Bio is just raking in the money these days

Ah, forgot to quote Metis. Oh well, I still remember it so I'll respond anyway, although maybe not much to respond to. So...yeah, bioengineering has loads of money. And to tennizen, yes biology has loads of money. Well, that was easy.

But that actually brings up an interesting point. If you look historically at the way fields are represented in the media, you'll see an interesting correlation between media exposure and how lucrative the field is. So right now, the fields that bring in the most money are health-related (the pharmaceutical industry is the largest in the country...take that big oil!), so ALL the science news is about new medical (normally fake) advances. But then look 40 years ago...all the news was about engineering...rockets...cars...oooh!!!!!

Well, I would say bio- and energy-related fields are the hot stuff at the moment. The way the public perceives scientists has a lot to do with the press and their tendency to sensationalize everything (familiar no?). The announced advances are not necessarily fake, sometimes it's just that it's too early to tell if they will work.

Exactly, it's all politics, and a good bit of very sketchy business reltions. And absolutely, I don't know about engineering (is that your field?), but in medicine basically any in vitro work is complete bullshit. It's so funny to hear professors talk about how "it only works if you do this and that and that and that, so that's why it's hard to reproduce"...so in other words, you just do "that and that and that and that" until you get it to tell you what you want. Tomas will do his usual crapping his pants routine when he has set points against Fed like Davis Cup and the AO.

The PMK is just poison for him, got to say finally he is actually using a slice backhand and not just for decoration, though he needs to rip it a bit more, that tactic works against the PMK. I honestly don't expect the PMK to be volleying like Edberg consistently.

That missed set point against Roger was so annoying, Roger was somewhere in Tasmania and Tomas tries a dropshot that didn't clear the net :o I hope he uses the slice more often, he had an awesome one down the line that was deep and very low-bouncing when Andreev was 40-30 up in the game that Tomas broke serve in the 2nd set.

Well, it's not just the press though. Scientists are certainly guilty fo over-sensationalizing their own work. I've read plenty of stem cell scientists talking about 5 years this and 10 years that. It gives people false hopes...actually quite sad when you hear lay people who have families with illnesses talking about stem cells. Yes, he is probably the young one along with Monfils for least fans, well on this board. Got to tennis events and there are many fans watching Monfils matches.

Berdych has won Bandwagon Player of the Month twice, well one for his play and the second one for the Madrid antics. I still have that match somewhere. The TB was hilarious, when he started running and got the massive knee lift after winning a point, he hasn't done it since, then all the avatars with shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Maybe the haircut has helped him. I wonder if Lucie told him to do it, she wears the pants in that relationship. Even the forehand has got a lot more air than it used to, the slice when used right is an excellent shot. I mean not like the Emilio Sanchez who couldn't hit a topspin backhand to save his life.

Tactiically he knows how to play Nadal, it's just whether he executes it or not.

Got to love Robbie Koening calling Berdych "rock solid", haha.

I'd rather see him at the top of the rankings than Djokovic. The shhhh incident was funny rather than anything else, as George said the important thing was that Tomas couldn't withstand the crowd hostility in his next match.

You have a point; scientists should be very cautious when talking to the press. Though I have personal experience of hearing a discussion between scientist and journalist and then reading distorted things in the published article. :tape:

It's good for scientists to be enthousiastic about the potential of new methods; it's that (sometimes extreme) optimism that drives us. I guess it's unavoidable for the public (who has no expertise in these matters) to get overexcited to some extent too when they read an article about a cancer cure in mice when in reality there is no guarantee that such a result will translate into humans (and in most cases it doesn't). Gene therapy is an excellent example. You might say that all the hype led to nothing but I would disagree; valuable lessons were learnt and that field is still going strong. It will certainly take much longer than initially predicted but significant progress has been made in many ways.

It was un "poisson d'avril". I think little of it, I just feel their personalities would not match at all.
Yes, exactly that made me doubt that article from the first place. I just can not see McEnroe and Gasquet working together. McEnroe and Murray, I could believe that but Gasquet?

Okay, thanks. A bit stressed. I have a long list of things that need to be done before I leave on Sunday, but I can't be arsed doing any of them which means I will leave them all until Sunday morning. multiquoting part one:

is it yoru cat in your avator? at first i thought it was a (don't know what is it in english, some kind of rat )

No, I don't have a cat . I found the photo in lolcats.com. It does look weird, its ears are pushed down in terror and anger .

Morning to all Nadal-fans, riding high today? I would in your place!!

I think this win over Blake didn't create as much euphoria as the one in IW; now a win over an in form Berdych would no doubt cause unprecedented reactions of joy from the Rafatards and MTF would start hating Nadal all over again (also in view of the clay season coming up soon)

I wanna say I'm glad Thomas won his match, but I'm afraid that :
a)The fangirls are gonna jump on me
b)GWH will accuse me of being a bandwagonner :awww:

a) nobody jumped on you :ras:
b) you're probably right :D

:) I tried to record but unfortunately my recording was stopped midway through the third. Was enjoyable although still not as good as his performance vs Ancic in Paris '06. That was one of his greatest matches for sure.

I haven't seen that match. Maybe Davy will reach that level in his upcoming matches .

I was going to have Hema on our team. But she loves Kax, she wouldn't be able to shoot his head off. And Hilde and Cheryl couldn't be on the same team, they'd bicker too much :p Metis is a possibility, but I think she's too nice :awww:

I don't have the killer instinct :awww:. But even if I did you'd be better off without me in a playstation battle of the tards .

I really have to go in a few min but I found a hilarious comment in the Fed forum :ras: "I don't know which roll-overs are worse, for Nadal or for the Duck " Fed is getting such tough matches for sure the Fedfans have a right to be indignant

finally, thank you Ann someone who agrees with me!!! i ttoallt love Andy roddick and i cannot stand some of the filth that is written on this forum, as on Andys forum you do not find any filth on Roger whatsover so Ann i think u r very brave for standing up for Andy, and i respect you for that, i think Andy is a great person and it would be great if he won tonight as he is indeed a fighter

Right I'm sure they're all wishing Roger good luck as we speak

Actually, yes they are. But most importantly they do not bash and trash talk any tennis player. If they should, they are confronted, the posts are usually deleted and they're given a warning. It is called respect.

He doesn't have time to go out to find a date  It's understandable

Speaking of that, why is there so much fuss about that engagement in GM? I read a couple of pages in that thread but there's no way I'm going to bother reading on about a debate of how soon their relationship will end or how hot or distorted her body looks .

But I did find funny the fact that Andy picked her out of a catalog :p

I think her name is Brooke Decker.
It's GM  it doesn't have to make sense. :p

Fo sho. I haven't checked out Novak's fanboards at his site yet, how are those? Anyone know? :scared:

I haven't :scared: but I think some of the people in Noleland have.

That's how true love starts :inlove:
:haha: Only four, that's pretty good. I remember back during the Olympics when Fish lost to Massu, Mardy's site was overrun by smirky, gloating Chileans. They must have outnumbered Mardy's fans 3 to 1 for a couple of days.
There are Mardy fans out there :scared:
Andy is infantile and sarcastic, that's all part of his charm. :p
Exactly, I mean I wouldn't be a ducktard if it were'nt for his press conferences
What round? It's over before it even began. Andy's head to head with Roger is starting to look like the Patriots 2007 season. Damn, my Patriots :bigcry: :hysteric:
:spit: Look at it this way : if Roger wins it's no big deal, if Andy does you can party all night in the duckforum (that's how I'm trying to prepare myself to the inevitable increase of the 1-7 H2H between rafa and Roger on clay, if Roger makes it to the final that is :help:)

The opening page has already scarred me for life, I've thus decided to refrain from posting Novak love on this board

First of all, Tangy didn't say that, *I* did.

Secondly, I can't BELIEVE you didn't pick me just 'cuz I'm a girl. The least you could have done was say it's because I'm a Rafatard. :sobbing:

  I actually first planned to reply to Tangy's post and refrained :tape: :D and of course I messed up my quoting afterwards

:haha: Surprisingly, yes.

Exactly, I mean I wouldn't be a ducktard if it were'nt for his press conferences
I really want to know what he and Roger thought of Misha's tantrum. I want some honest answers from Roger especially. He's gotten too media-savvy, always playing it safe.

I don't care if Andy ends up 2-26 vs Roger lifetime, as long as that one other win leads to another slam title somewhere down the line.

Wow, she does look a little bit like me  :p.

Damn. You're just no fun today, Jan Michael. ;)

It's particularly funny, I'm sure, when we attempt to pronounce the "r" and "n" sounds, which don't actually exist in English. My French-speaking friend tried to correct the way I say "Comment vous appelez-vous". I was finally forced to admit that my tongue is broken. :sobbing:

I had a cat that made that face just before he was ready to take a swipe at me. Of course it was usually when it was time to put him in the pet carrier, which he hated...so maybe he got pissed BECAUSE he was scared.
