Why is Nadal playing so badly?

I guess we all have our off days and he is going for his shots with the depth knowing Kolya will pick off the short ones but this tactic isn't working, he's simply not playing well enough. If I was Nadal I would become more defensive soon, make Kolya hit the spots, if he can - too good - but Nadal's certainly not winning like this unless he improves tenfold.

I think unless Kolya gets a double break advantage, that is he is forced at some point to serve for it with pressure on Nadal will be chasing everything down and just putting it in court. I know a lot of Nadal fans don't like when he does that but it's an effective tactic and he may well get a chance even if Davydenko holds easily over and over all it takes is one poor game and we know the Russian is capable of that.

That thread in GM reminded me why exactly I don't post there anymore. Reading comprehension skills are miserable on this board. People saying Rafa whined about being in the US for four weeks when he complained about having to defend three titles and a final in four weeks. :retard:
I had to write a dozen of posts to try and explain that but I guess people always read and understand only what they want to.

The only good thing was a poster saying :haha::

What would you feel if Dubai is played in the middle of March, say between IW and Miami, because the Emirate broadcaster needs to air an important camel race in whole early March?
That's the kind of feeling I'm having now. Crap.

40 of 97 in this match

He had the right game plan but he didn't play well with it. His game plan was to go for depth with his shots to try and not be controlled, surely what most Nadal fans would want? He played a poor match but that's what happens sometimes if you try and be aggressive, if you play bad, you get beat.

So, don't you think he should have tried to change it during the match?

He was maybe a little slow to adapt but he was losing literally ALL the points when he fell into defensive mode because Kolya was on form so realistically I think sink or swim with the attacking approach is a good way to play. I mean for sure he could've tried something different but realistically there is no way he was going to break Kolya grinding out points.

Yeah you're right about that. Btw when Kolya is on he's VERy hard to beat if not unbeatable. As you said he is one of the best returners, taking the ball so early and even faster than Rafa. Only maybe if Rafa was more accurate on his attacks and had served better he would've had a chance. Rafa's serving is just ... so annoying, some days he can serve pretty decent and some days his serve is absolutely no good against top players like Kolya.

I probably should be more upset about this than I am. Davy played quite well today. Rafa should, perhaps, have made it closer, but I still think Kolya would have won had Rafa played as he has all week.

I suggest that before we "bury" Rafa on clay, we see how he looks in Monte Carlo.

To the person who said that Nadal owns no title off clay...This is true, but consider the fact that VERY few players win titles on more than one surface.

To the person who said that Nadal owns no title off clay...This is true, but consider the fact that VERY few players win titles on more than one surface.

Hi Cheryl
I dont't think we should worry about the clay. He did really well on his worst surface, why would he have a slump on clay!

I agree. Aside from a few off matches, this is good as I've ever seen Rafa play on hardcourts. I think he's going to be quite impressive on clay.

^^ Metis, this loss is a good way for us to get off MTF for a while:lol: I am all about the positives. So what say let's start slow. Completely avoid MTF tomorrow? And not even lurking. What say?

I agree, though I don't think Rafa winning would have made it harder for me to leave. The opposite actually :(. Now I'll be curious to read all the gloom and doom threads in GM...

Just kidding  I'm staying away from MTF starting tomorrow and until MC as planned.

I'm not happy but considering all the awful losses Roger's had lately I can't really muster too much sympathy this time

Once again Rafa had a way better hard court season that last year, I see absolutely no reasons to think he's not gonna dominate again

 I can understand. My husband who is a Fed fan is absolutely delighted with Nadal's loss today. As you can see we are a very harmonious couple:lol:

Don't goooooooo! We need some common sense feet on the ground round here, right now!

 Andreea:hug:. Metis and I decided to de-addict ourselves of MTF until the clay season because we have loads of work to do. I don't want to go but I think its better. But don't laugh at me if I am not able to stay away:lol:

The difference is that: on clay he is able to win those off matces, on HC not...yet :)

No Rafa just a very poor returner  (still in Linda mode)

  But I'm afraid you're right, he's become a totally pathetic returner. Once upon a time he used to be one of the best returners on ATP.
:(

And unlike you all here I don't see Rafa doing as well as last year on clay. I'm not gonna have any hopes. Rafa is done and will never win a tennis match again, not to speak of a title. :o
