Really? I always thought that Hungarian and Finnish were the only European languages that are totally unrelated to any other language...

Oh, add Estonian as number 3 to Finnish and Hungarian. Hungarian is hard for us though, lot more different. :o :o But you're smart that you knew this much. :D

Fine, forgive me for being cynical but I can envisage a situation at the end of his career that no matter what he does, you won't rank him highly among the all time greats.

Yes, but surely if you're up against better players, you need to raise your game higher....well take this for example. The Brasil team of 1970, probably the greatest team of all time. Now they're the greatest because they were simply the best, not because the competition they had to beat was the strongest of all time

No, you are the one who seems to be complaining that I am not giving him praise. I am the one who is being cautious and want to see what happens at the end of his career.

Your second point just proved my point already. Nadal doesn't have it on clay, but you still don't want this to end. I said yesterday I am sick of talking about it.

Brazil in 1970, they played some very good and excellent sides and overcame them all. Can't be compared with Nadal's situation, there isn't anyone on clay at the moment, that would equate to the West German, Italian or English sides of the 70s, even to use that as a comparison.

Why are you continuing this. If it's not a troll or a wind up?

I'm not used to listen to it, that's probably the reason why... I watched some of the Norwegian Idol and watch sometimes Swedish poker shows... Both seem rather close to English/German but sound pretty similar

Well they are from the same overall family, except one branch English. Dutch, German, Afrikaans is West Germanic. Swedish, Danish, Norwegian ( both forms), Icelandic and Faroese are North Germanic.

There is some crossover, but they are pretty different to my ear.

Fine we'll stop, we are heading nowhere. The fact you won't even watch Nadal matches on clay because you'll think they'll be a beatdown every time speaks volumes for how highly you rate him :D

In the meantime, Federer should thank his lucky stars he isn't playing Valencia, Almagro would rip him a fat one.

Borg had Vilas, Nadal has had no one, I think that makes a difference in who was the best on clay debate.

Between Houston '74 and MC '80 Borg beat Vilas 11 straight times on clay:

6-2 6-4
2-6 3-6 6-3 6-3 7-5
6-2 6-3 6-4
6-3 6-4 6-2
6-3 6-1 7-6
6-4 1-6 6-2 6-0
6-2 6-3
6-1 6-1 6-3
6-3 6-3
6-2 6-3
6-1 6-0 6-2

Bolded are the RG meetings. That doesn't signal competition to me. Note the final 14 sets of that streak were all 6-3 or better for Borg. He owned Vilas to a ridiculous level.

I still think Nadal has a way to go to catch Borg but the competition stuff is a weak argument.

Oh, a teacher! :hatoff:
You know we had the same discussion here a bit, English has become the prevailing first foregin language and specialists say it would be better to study some other foregin language first and then English later as it's 'easier and kids get it from the cartoons and computers anyway'... And of course during the Soviet regime 8-year-olds started studying Russian in Estonian schools too, and then we had the option of German or French at our schools but now all kids and parents only want English. :( Well, at least most of them, only the smart ones opt for German or French and it seems we don't have even enough good German and French teachers here any more. :o Those eurocrat-wannabes trying to study & use French at an older age are sooo funny. :o :o

Well, here kids (or rather their parents) were supposed to have the choice for the foreign language they would learn in primary schools, but mostly it was english, and personnaly, i find it simpler this way, because it's a lot of trouble making sure all the schools can provide with some english lessons, so you can imagine if we were to provide several. :smash: Us primary schools teachers aren't supposed to be specialised and some of us can teach english, other could only teach spanish, others were bad at languages, and so on, and there's no more money to be used to pay for more teachers, oc :o. So now the new teachers are supposed to all be able to teach the bases of english (given that nowadays everyone's learnt a lot of english whatever you studied at uni) and the idea is to start another foreign language early at junior highschool (english used to start there in the 1st year, and german or spanish would start in the 3rd year). I dunno whether it's changed, though. anyway, our current gouvernment doesn't seem to really care about education : they suppress teachers jobs, want to cancel some "costly" options in hugh school, so we're definitly not going towards any language diversification. :o

Almagro didn't even have to play well today, he has Haase or Korolev in the semis. Definite chance to defend his crown for a 3rd time.

Well it's like the people who use if Nadal wasn't around Federer would have won RG titles. If Federer wasn't around, then Roddick would have won Wimbledons and if Borg wasn't around, then Vilas would have won more than 1 RG title.

Not a problem, but I like to be aware of what goes on in their communities, well as aware as I can be.

It's not one of the great aspects of history within these nations as to how the Sami were treated. At least they don't call them Lapps now, like they used to and yes I know what lapua means.

There is still a way to go, but at least there are steps in a positive direction for the most part, just hope they don't totally abandon the reindeer herding.

It's called joking the traditional singing. There was a big cultural resurgence in the 80s. They wouldn't sing or speak their own language, pretty much they tried to culturally wipe them out or assimilate them into mainstream society.

Mari Boine is the most well known Sami singer. They asked her to perform at the Lillehammer Games, she said no. Her words “ I refused to perform at the Lillehammer Winter Olympics because I didn’t want to be a decoration. ”

 I hate the arrogant Swiss.

Funny to see Federer doomsayers in here. Stop moaning about his play, people get broken in tennis match, he is not in danger of defeat or even a third set at this point. He is actually playing okay I think, when he is cold he is being edged out because Gil is playing pretty good, inspired by the crowd, but when he is blowing hot he is hitting the spots and certainly as long as he wins the UE's don't worry me as long as he has pop in his shots and power in his legs because that is what has been missing.

I seriously hate figure skating, it's not sport, it's entertainment. Just like pro wrestling, though seeing Hulk Hogan on skates would be funny.

There is a reason to use the foul. I remember one of our defenders got nutmegged or "Petit Pont". Next time that guy came near him, he chopped him.

Estoril used to be the premium MM clay event ffter Barcelona and Bastad (just added that for Whitler ;) )

Cheech Marin is the only impostor there. The man had a great 0-17 GS record in singles, yes he took Sampras to 5 sets at RG, but so did Cedric Kauffman.

Todd Martin, what a gentle giant he was. Very likable man, he wasn't scared of a claycourt, that generation actually decided to play against the big guys on clay.

Carlos Costa, the man with the bow legs and the sexy serve.

I've never been a virtuoso, I was a solid defender but could never keep my cool and got way too many yellow and red cards :o. My brother, on the other hand, was in junior with Chapuisat, they used to play both forward and he was actually better than Chapi when they were both 16...

Chapi's father was better imo :o though hard to compare since Gabet Chapuisat was more of a defender...

I remember the old days before Chapi was transfered to Bayer Uerdingen, Lausanne-Sports had a hell of a team, with 5-6 international players. And those years were pretty nice for Swiss football (1993-1994)
