i am guessing the record (at least in the open era) is probably Lendl or Connors, but does anyone here (maybe Voo or NYC or CmonAussie) know?

I was bored, sue me...

Obviously, Ivan Lendl has lost 14 slam finals, which already puts him ahead of Hewitt, but here is the full list:

1) 1980 US QF - John McEnroe
2) 1981 RG F - Bjorn Borg
3) 1982 RG R16 - Mats Wilander
4) 1982 US F - Jimmy Connors
5) 1983 RG QF - Yannick Noah
6) 1983 W SF - John McEnroe
7) 1983 US F - Jimmy Connors
8) 1983 AO F - Mats Wilander
9) 1984 US F - John McEnroe
10) 1985 RG F - Mats Wilander
11) 1985 AO F - Stefan Edberg
12) 1986 W F - Ivan Lendl
13) 1987 W F - Pat Cash
14) 1988 US F - Mats Wilander
15) 1989 RG R16 - Michael Chang
16) 1989 W SF - Boris Becker
17) 1989 US F - Boris Becker
18) 1990 W SF - Stefan Edberg
19) 1990 US QF - Pete Sampras
20) 1991 AO F - Boris Becker
21) 1991 US SF - Stefan Edberg
22) 1992 US QF - Stefan Edberg
23) 1994 AO R16 - Pete Sampras

23 losses to tennis legends!
Lendl either won a slam, or lost to the eventual champion for 13 consecutive years.
In 1983, Lendl lost to the eventual champion at every slam!

Shame there aren't any Lendl-trolls - otherwise we could have a thread entitled, "How many grand slams would Lendl have won without Borg, McEnroe, Connors, Wilander, Becker, Edberg, & Sampras?" Seriously though, that's an impressive roll-call of losses.

Not nearly as often as I expected. Agassi was often beaten by the eventual losing finalist.

Edberg, Becker and Wilander might be interesting too.
Maybe Gerulaitis has more than 10, most against Borg? :)

:o
Doesn't change my argument though. :p

I like the idea of counting the number of times a player has lost to the eventual GS champion.

I've created a spreadsheet and started filling in all the players who lost to the eventual GS champ from 2006 until 2009.
Here are the first results.

7 times:

Federer

6 times:

Djokovic

5 times:

Haas

4 times:

Roddick

3 times:

Nadal
Soderling
Del Potro
Hewitt
Davydenko

I will continue to work on the spreadsheet and post the final results here and in the statistics forum.

agreed. Lendl was basically a less refined version of Federer.

imo, if Wimbledon had been as slow during Lendl's career as it is now, he would have won several. AO was also a grass court event until '88.

imo, with the present courts, Lendl could have been able to win the grand slam.

7 times:

Haas
Djokovic
Henman

5 times:

Kiefer
Nalbandian
Schalken
Bjorkman

4 times:

Gonzalez
Davydenko
Gasquet
Safin
Grosjean

Give me a week and a half and I'll have a complete list for the entire Open Era.

I'm through working this out for the Open Era.

Here are the highest scorers:

1) Lendl 23
2) Connors 15
3) Agassi 12
4) Edberg, John McEnroe, Hewitt, Chang 11
8) Sampras, Roddick, Kafelnikov, Henman 10
12) Federer, Tony Roche, Ferrero, Bjorkman, Stan Smith, Todd Martin 9

Later this week I'll post a thread in the statistics forum with the complete results.

I've used it as a homework exercise in excel, and I have got the results specified per slam, decade, round in which the player lost, and eventual winner.

Some tidbits....

The only player to lose to the eventual winner in 6 different rounds is..... PaulMcNamee! He never made a slam final!
The player who lost to the eventual Roland Garros champion most often is.... Andrei Medvedev!
The player who lost most often to the eventual champion in the eighties was... Ivan Lendl (17 times!)
The players who lost most often to the eventual slam winner in the R16 are... Hewitt, Haas and Stan Smith!
