AO SF: Who's making the final? [14] Marin Cilic v [5] Andy Murray

Who will win this interesting encounter? Marin won in straight sets when they met at the US Open last year, but Andy is playing far, far better now...

It's hard to bet against Murray the way he played that first set. Granted, he won't hit Cilic off the court like he did to Rafa, but he was spot on tonight.

It should be an interesting match. Cilic has to be tired but he's young and should regroup after two 5-setters in a row. He has slighlty a mental adventage over Murray because beat him easily at the US Open. I think his reaction after today's win is a little bit disquieting, he reacted like he won a Grand Slam event. He's very consistent in improving, had a couple 4th round loses, then finally advanced to the quarters, now first semifinal. Maybe he's already fulfilled?

I expect Murray in 4 but without signs of Cilic's physical tiredness.

Everything points towards Murray - played better overall in the tournament, Cilic has been on court roughly twice the amount of time Murray has, etc. - but I have a feeling Cilic will win.

Not sure why but I voted Cilic in 5. I actually think Murray will win & get revenge of sorts for the USO. Will be interesting to see if Murray can keep his level up & not have a let down seeing as he's clear favourite to get to the final (he's in great form, beaten some top players already, not dropped a set, Cilic has had to expend a lot of energy already etc).

Could see him losing a set but I don't seriously see him losing the match. No explanation then as to why I voted Cilic in 5, maybe just wishful thinking ;)

I cant say. Half of me think Murray in straights the other half of me thinks Murray might let himself down here, either way Cilic is surely to tired, and if it goes long Andy becomes the favorite.

No way to make a prediction. Will Andy Sampras Murray show up or Andy Santoro Murray show up?

Will Cilic round of 16 show up or Cilic quarterfinal show up?

Will Andy Have a let down?

Will cilic recover physically?

I will give the edge to Murray do to fitness but if he plays slow ball with cilic who knows. Both players Servinfg will be crucial.

I saw Cilic win today playing the worse tennis of his life. I have not seen Andy do that before.

Hard to tell but my gut says Andy. Cant count Cilic out though. He is a fighter in this tournament.

Murray in 3 or 4, I reckon.

Murray will drive Cilic crazy with his retrieval abilities and surely won't be the same passive Murray who got mullered against Cilic at the US Open. Not only that but a lot of Cilic's groundies are sitting up on this surface where as the US Open surface carried his ball through the court with much more penetration.

Murray is in excellent form and all those hours of accumulated tennis for Cilic Bang are bound to add up.

Murray in 3 or 4.

I would be more than interested in this match in case Davydenko beats Federer tomorrow, because if that happens, I don't think it will be too far fetched to think Murray will be the favorite to win the slam title here.

I think everyone will have some vested interest in watching Davydenko and Federer tomorrow (I for one believe Fed will beat him but just saying). ;)

It's not far-fetched, it's absolutely guaranteed. Murray would be 1.80ish to win the tournament if the other semi ends up being djoko-davy (2.6 at present, favourite cos fed is a round behind).

Doesn't hurt he'll also have an extra day's rest on the other semi-finalists either.

Yep and also remember Safin AO'04 run when he played 2 5-setters and 3 4-setters before SF and managed to hold on in another 5-set marathon in SF. Other thing that he played 34-year old :)

Murray in 3. He won't let last year's US Open be repeated and some people forget that he may have been carrying some injury. The H2H is still 3-1 to Murray

Andy was great to watch today, especially in the first set, and he proved he's got Plan B now and a couple of extra gears when required.

I still think that the ultimate winner will come from the top half of the draw, whether it's Federer, Djokovic or Davydenko, but I'll be very surprised if Murray isn't the one to beat.

I think it is. SF is an incredible accomplishment for Cilic and he knows this, he looked like a dead man walking for 2 and a half sets against Roddick, after another 5-setter, he's only going to get worse. Murray on the other hand is in great shape, in great form, surely knows what an opportunity this is, knows what shape Cilic is in, and will seize it mercilessly.

Murray in 3 comfortably, 4 sets at most imo.

I agree with this - and when people start locking in a Murray win and looking beyond to the next round that's when I worry - Murray is capable of slipping on banana skins even at this stage and cilic is a big banana skin.

That said, I think Murray will win, but I don't see this being a stroll in the park. Cilic may be tired but he has nothing to lose and he's gonna just go out there and swing freely.

Geo
01-26-2010, 03:55 PM
unfortunately I think it will be Murray :o He's had the best luck with the draw in this tournament-from the easiest path to the QF to the injury of Nadal. He hasn't wasted much energy at all so he's ready to go.

Cilic on the other hand has had a much tougher road to the SF and has spent a lot of time on court. Also, we know Cilic can be very nervous and go through choking patches in the big matches  :awww: Since this is the biggest match of his career, even if he's not dead tired from his previous marathon wins, I'm sure he'll mentally go away :o

hopefully I'm wrong but I see Murray winning this in 3 or 4 sets

I'd be really surprised if Murray lost this.
It would continue the tradition of the surprise finalist though, which would be interesting to see.
But I don't think Marin has much energy anymore, a scenario of about 63 76 75 for Murray is very likely.

Being generous to Cilic and going with Murray in four. Will be back to rooting against the Scot as usual but have to admit he's slooowly growing on me... At the very least, I still prefer to see him rather than Nadal possibly face Federer in the final because, regardless of the outcome, the tennis is IMO more watchable.

Cilic for sure has the game to beat Murray, but he will be tired.

I also hope Murray wins, if Cilic wins he will underperform due to tiredness like Safin when he made the 04 australian open final after many five setters.

Murray could play a very competitive match against Fed, Davy, Djoko or Tsonga.

should cilic win this, regardless what happens in the final he'll really make a huge impact. wawrinka, delpo, roddick, murray thats awesome line up to beat for a young bloke.
now what will happen, mathematically (to express it that way) its murray. experience, form, conditions, surface should work in his favor more than it did at uso.
its really big for both. murray is the fave so should he loose its a big blow considering history with big hitters (including cilic), thus the pressure is on him entirely.

should be a great match but murray to wear down cilic in 4 or 5 sets.

Cilic even if he has the ability to beat Murray, he will not have the energy to do it.
He won 3 five-set matches & 1 four-set match & 1 three-set match i.e. the total = 22 sets.
While Murray won his 5 matches in straight sets i.e. the total = 14 1/2 sets.

I think Murray will qualify for the final without losing a set.

All things being equal murray should win fairly easily (the easily part coming more from Cilic being tired)

However Andy quite often does not come through in grand slam moments where it appears to be easy

Verdasco, Tsonga - AO, Roddick - Wim, cilic - US Open - Now all four opponents played at extremely high level and so it could be that he just ran in to a hot one each time but sooner or later if he wants a GS he needs to assert himself and be the hot one

I see him on the edge this year to be honest - Win a slam this year and he can go onto multiple success over the years, otherwise he may never or just win one which for me would be a major dissapointment considering his amazing control of a tennis ball
