Cilic one win away from top ten

Cilic, currently at #14, will move up to at least #12 next week. If he beats Roddick today he'll move up to #10. If he beats Roddick and Tsonga loses to Djokovic, Cilic will be #9.

And if it doesn't happen next week it'll probably happen soon. He has 150 next-best points in case he doesn't defend Zagreb next week, and at the next two Masters 1000 tournaments (IW and Miami) he's defending only 90 points.

Will be glad to see Marin in top 10, he deserves it. He can definitively add variety to his game over the next few months. Someone somewhere mentioned that Roddick has been bothered slightly with his injured knee (not familiar with the validity of the information tho), so if that's true, his chance to progress to the SF is even better now. Potential victory over Roddick would probably instigate further good results this year.

Congratulations Andy Roddick on reaching the AO SF.

It's not Wimbledon and he's not playing Murray :p

It was just a matter of time... We all know he's a top 5 material, he can probably even achieve more than that, but let's wait and see.

Marin Cilic, a better version of Del Potro, lets see if he can actually win a slam someday though, and stop with those mental break downs.

I wouldn't go that far yet. Del Potro still has a better forehand and serve....though obviously Cilic and Del Potro both can improve their serves considerably due to their height.

Also, thus far Del Potro has shown that even when he isn't playing his best, he can grind and stay close in matches, then make big shots in big moments and still win. Cilic is still a streaky player who is unplayable when on, and pretty bad when off.

2 years ago it was Murray....last year it was Del Potro....this year it will be Cilic making his run at the US Open and solidifying his spot among the top players.

Del Potro's forehand is really inconsistent, he finally got it together late last year but its known to break down on him. If Del Potro did not win the US open last year would you be saying all those positives about him that you have?

I personally would say the same stuff, because that is what i've seen from him. But obviously winning the Slam showed that he is one of the few in today's game that has the guts to do it....so that does improve him significantly in my eyes. Lots of players have a big enough game, but Del Potro showed that he is tough enough mentally to get it done.

I definitely take a fully healthy Del Potro over Cilic right now.

Cilic might be our surprise finalist this year. I'm horribly conflicted, though, as Roddick is my favorite player.

Good for Cilic, though this will force Verdasco out of the top 10. Both of these guys, including Tsonga should be in the top 10, please leave Soderling!:D

Mentally tough maybe, for now, but i believe Cilic has one equalizer which will in the end make him last longer on tour and maybe have a better career, the movement, he is such a slick natural mover. Del Potro has a big wing span he moves beautifully from side to side, but where he suffers is average netplay at best and moving from the back of the court to the front, this is why drop shots work on him a lot, hes not as natural or fluid as Cilic. Marin's volley's are underrated and the guy gets from the baseline to the net as quick as a 5-10 player.

Best 6'6" mover I have ever seen. Fit, explosive, big serve, good volleys, big groundies, mentally pretty good (hes young), worker of court, committed, and hes old school. I look at him like a Lendle maybe. Does not look to be the type of guy to get distracted with fame. Very mature attitude for his age. Good head on his shoulders.

Look for him to do big things. He just needs a little more confidence. Like Lendle did.

Can ya tell I like him?

I saw Cilic against Tomic and he was abseloutely awful, doesnt strike me at all than a streaky player. Fair enough hes young, but his forehand is very shakey, serve not particularily good for a tall guy. He can hit some very nice shots but doesnt have the mental strength or determination to come through when playing off his best.

Huge choker in big matches. That's never changed since he came on tour.

One thing I'll give him though: recently he's become better at grinding out results when playing badly. That's a crucial first step for most top players - Del Potro reached it in 2008.

Worst big match tiebreak record and bp conversion in the top50.

Didn't you see the match with Del Potro? Endless bps mis-hit out of court, the only ones Cilic took were when Del Potro doublefaulted or dumped one in the net. That's entirely typical for him.

So, is he still a huge big match choker? Are we talking about the same guy that we burdened with the responsibility of taking us to DC semi and he obliged?
I can't even begin to explain how and where your interpretations of stats go skewed, but honestly, it seems as if the stats are the only thing you go by and haven't seen a single match actually played.
