Here is how the top players line up:

Roger Federer (Dai-Y) and Rafael Nadal as Yokozuna (=Grand Champions)
Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro as Ozeki (=Champions). Del Potro got promoted following his victory at the US Open.
Robin Soderling as Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I)
Andy Roddick (a former Ozeki), Andy Murray and Fernando Gonzalez (both former Sekiwake) as Komusubi (=Junior Champions II)

The top Maegashira (=non-champion) ranks are filled by:

Nikolay Davydenko (former Sekiwake) and Fernando Verdasco (former Komusubi) at M1
Jo-Wifried Tsonga (former Sekiwake) and Gael Monfils (former Komusubi) at M2, and
Radek Stepanek and Marin Cilic at M3

No player is on a Yokozuna run. Andy Roddick would be (re-)promoted to Ozeki if he reaches the final, Andy Murray if he wins the tournament.

Robin Soderling exited the tournament early and will be demoted to Komusubi for the French Open 2010.

It looks like this guy applies the sumo fighting way of ranking to tennis, interesting.

Mass Ozeki exit -- Safina, Dementieva will be demoted to Sekiwake after this tournament, Clijsters, del Potro go kadoban (one more missed QF and they get demoted too). The only Ozeki stil in the tournament is Djokovic.

Cilic has secured a first-time sanyaku promotion (i.e., at least to Komusubi), Wickmayer will lose her sanyaku rank after the tournament.

Why did Roddick lose his Ozeki ranking?

His USO win doesn't count anymore?

If one misses twice GS quarterfinals in a row one loses Ozeki rank. Thus, Roddick got demoted after his no-show at Roland Garros 2008. Only Yokozuna is a rank for life.

Roddick is already back at Sekiwake though, after his R4 win over Gonzalez (and of course he's a career-high Ozeki).

Cilic gets a first-time Sekiwake prlomotion, Murray is back at Sekiwake. Should one of them win the tournament he'll be the 29th Ozeki of the open era (rather than the 69th/71st Sekiwake).

Murray is one win away not only from his first slam but also from Ozeki promotion. In fact the Banzuke for the French Open is done, except for whether Murray will be Sekiwake or Ozeki, and whether Tsonga will be Komusubi or Sekiwake (depending on how he fares tonight against Federer).

Yokozuna: Federer, Nadal
Ozeki: Djokovic, del Potro (k), [Murray]
Sekiwake: Roddick, Cilic, [Murray], [Tsonga]
Komusubi: Soderling, [Tsonga]

I used to think your system was a wee bit weird. But now I still think it's weird but in a good way.
