Just the four sets and 2.5 hours today for Juan, so that's an improvement :)

Lucky - Mayer should really have had that 4th set. Even had 2bps in the last game, one a simple volley.

Del Potro was tired and trying to win points with one or two shots instead of his usual powerful but patient play. It worked, he won, but he made a lot of unforced errors.

His serve helped him a lot.

He is saying on the espn latin america interview that he is super tired, and that both Cilic and Wawrinka and super tough, so he does not prefer to play one over the other.

this time he DOES look tired, this match was pretty damn difficult even if he won in 4, got his serve broken left and right but at the end it was what kept him on the match

He can't win the tournament playing like this and either Cilic or Stan will give him a run for his money :help:

Wawrinka would be much better for him in current condition - far easier to fire serves past him than Cilic.

I rate Wawrinka higher than Cilic, Wawrinka is great and I would expect him to beat Del Potro.

Wawrinka can over rally Del Potro with that great backhand of his, Cilic, I don´t think so. Cilic was hideous against Tomic.

Perhaps the only reason why Del Potro won the US Open is that the only 5 sets match he had to play was the last one he had to play. The other top players, except Djoko, seem much fitter.

Pathetic would too kind a word for Pot Smoke's performance today.
An atp tour meeting should be held right away to take away that USO title from him and he should be forbidden from playing professional tennis for one year under the 'being baggeled by a tour clown' treaty.

Impressive from Mayer, good fight from Del Potro. This surface really should suit Del Potro if he can recover from these lengthy matches and find some form. Looking forward to a potential match against Cilic.

Never seen Mayer play before, and was impressed, tho his FH motion is

As for Del Potro :yeah: Keeps on clinging on :D

This is the end of the road for Del Potro. Serious work to do in the fitness department... (and also in the "not making matches longer than necessary" department)

happy del potro pulled out the win, hes not playing like the champion but hes winning. still these sets he is donating in matches must stop, or he will pay for it later on, or even in his next match.

Nice bagel from Flo, too bad there wasn't more to get for him.

i really want to see wawrinka vs del potro, i love both, but you so know stan will fuck up against cilic. i can see stan losing with cilic dead on his feet in a 5th set.

I was impressed with Mayer. I thought he played a tough match and I think he consistently hit excellent groundies as opposed to Del Pony choking. Juanito was clutch when it counted.

Oh well , i am happy because he won , but i am sad because he is not going to win this tournament , I had a big ilusion with delpo and this tournament because this surface suits him really well , but it is impossible to win a tournament like this playing at 50% of their chances in the physical.

Florian  That one was a winnable match, Juan-Martin does not look to feel good AT ALL. :o :scared:

...and one of the last players worth watching is gone.

Nice to see Florian back at the Grand Slam level where he belongs, and you've got to admire Del Potro's gutsiness, grinding out tough wins one after another. Can't say I'm exactly looking forward to a week's worth of 'exciting' and 'gripping' baseline power tennis from now on, though.

Don't expect Potro to get past any reasonable challenge, Murray's draw looking not so bad now, with the hardst challenge possibly being Nadal. Isner will be tough, but Andy has enough to move him around.

Bagel should count as 2 sets.

Andy got no chance of moving past Nadal that is for sure, horridly weak serve Murray, this will probably be a Roddick v Nadal sf.

WTF happened to Delpo in the 2nd set??? I didn't see that set - was he sleepwalking?! He looked tired. I'm not liking his chances against Cilic. :awww:

*LOL* :D :D :D

Watching del Potro is pretty damn entertaining due to his fairly bipolar nature of play; extreme lows extreme highs. He gets on those roles where he just absolutely smacks a volley of FH and BH winners and it sure is entertaining. It seems he likes to play possum sometimes too.

I wonder how that wrist will continue to hold up...

Didn't see that match, but a bagel set, WTF?!

Potro's a strange boy in the way that he can be upset/annoyed so much that he can tank an entire set, yet when the pressure is on towards the end of a close match, he is one of the best clutch players around (see matches vs Fed @ USO, 2 x Roddick, Soderling, Nadal etc last year).

Rematch of last year's R16 for Del Potro. Unfortunately tonight is the first time I am catching a proper glimpse of this year's AO, seeing as I have the incovenince of having to go to work rather than being able to skive from university as I did the previous 3 AOs.

Despite Potro's tanking/tiredness etc, judging from what I've read about Cilic's match vs Tomic, Potty has a good shot of reaching the QFs again.
