Good one Roger. Nice fight from Victor at 0-4 in the 3rd he really didn't want to be bagel.

Yeah, there was a distinct smell of bagels in the air and Federer seemed hungry for one, but Hanescu did well to avoid it.

Well that was at least a lot more convincing performance than his 1st round match. :yeah:
(which, of course, had a lot to do with the quality of the opponent.)

Nice demonstration Feds.

Btw, may the next interviewer - whether it's Courier, the Prince of Wales or whoever - who dares mentioning the obnoxious 'd'-word in Federer-interviews, be *shot*. It's getting more-than-embarrassing by now. And NO, I am NOT interested. :o :armed:
(sorry about that, folks.)

Diapergate has been set up. Federer is changing diapers 24 times a day so he has his excuse armed.

Federer is clearly a very arrogant man (for changing diapers).

***

ANYWAAAYYYY... Sharp match from Federer, he hit like more than 50 winners and around about 17 errors. He seemed confident in his shots and it isn't as if Hanescu played badly. The inside in and inside out forehand was firing very nicely.

Not only that, but his movement was a lot sharper, and he seemed very eager to chase down balls and made a lot of very good defensive plays. There was a *sick* point in the first set; i'm sure it will be youtubed soon.

Good stuff then...

fed played well but i hate matches like this, when guys have nothing to harm fed with so the commentators resort to fawning over fed.

Decent performance with a few spectacular points. Sometimes got the feeling Fed was finding it hard to maintain concentration. Not many long rallies, partly because Fed was being aggressive, partly because Hanescu was error-prone. Balance when stretched wide on forehand side clearly a weakness that better players (e.g., Davydenko) will exploit.

HRH Prince William meets with Roger Federer

The future King of England, HRH Prince William of Wales, came face-to-face with the king and queen of the courts today, dropping in on the night session at Melbourne Park.

The Prince paid a post-match visit to world No.1 Serena Williams before heading on to Rod Laver Arena to take in some of Roger Federer's second round match against Victor Hanescu.

HRH's entrance onto court was greeted by a warm round of applause from the assembled fans, delaying play for a couple of minutes. At the end of the match Federer addressed the Prince from courtside, saying: "welcome to tennis".

Later, the two met face to face backstage, posing for photos that were mailed to the Palace at the request of the Prince.

In his post-match press conference, Federer said he was delighted to have played in front of Prince William. "This one tonight was obviously extremely special," said the world No.1. "It's a pleasure playing in front of him.”

"Where he comes from, he knows tennis, and Wimbledon's big, you know. So for me it was … a big honor that he came to watch me."

Since this seems to be the proper thread, I'll post here the same I did on the other:

From what I saw, Federer was hitting the ball much harder than he has as of late. Good sign and that's where he should be going. He has taken power off his game since 2004-2006 IMO, perhaps adjusting for RG and Nadal too much.

Yes I noticed that. Few long rallies. Promising development. He'll need to get the first strike in against Davydenko.

Andreev - top spin off forehand attacking Federer backhand = difficult match.

Hanescu - reasonably flat hitting with little spin = easy match.

Federer's improvement in form had much to do with the way the opponent plays. Federer loves flat and low levels of spin hitting and struggles against heavy top spin.

Agreed, but there's much more to it

Roger plays badly against retrievers, pushers and in general defensive players, if they have topspin is even worse, Andreev has the kind of forehand that can trouble Roger but not more weapons that's why he gives him a bad time but hasn't been able to defeat him yet ;)

He did play better against Hanescu because he cut the UEs and his serve was much better placed and more effective, he didn't serve nearly as well in the Andreev match :p
