We also all know what happened last night...?

Hewwitt has done nothing lately. Baggy just won Stockholm, and if not for injuries, would easily be in the top 20. Baggy in straights.

Shouldn't we wait for them to win their first and second round matches before we can talk about this. :D

Hardly a staggering premonition.

But Hewitt will struggle in front of Baghdatis' home crowd.

Too bad it will be on Rod Laver arena. There is going to be less Greek/Cypriot supporters then there would on the outside courts.

Simon isn't 100% healthy though is he? Only thing he'll be crashing is the medical room.

Baghdatis, Hewitt could be one of the better matches of this tourney.

The same Simon who got bageled by Tomic?

I think Lleyton will win this, because of the support from the crowd. He loves pressure, he thrives on it.

I hate how people of Greek/Cypriot heritage support him, when they're Australian citizens. Why live here if you're going to support someone just because they're Greek/Cypriot.

Some of them may not be Australian citizens yet. Some of them are immigrants of first generation and they will never become Australians because your motherland is where you were born no matter what you say. Plus-- being part of a small ethnicity is different. Baghdatis is from country that never achieved anything in tennis. You have to be more understandable here

Somehow I am pretty sure you had nothing against Australians of Serbian ethnicity to cheer for Ivanovic even if she, say, played against Stosur or Molik ;)

Then why come here? Why not stay in Greece/Cyprus? It's the exact same thing with Ivanovic and Serbians. To me, it's like saying I'm proud to be this nationality, yet I'll live in Australia, and reap the benfits. They're not truly supportive of either country.

If I went and lived permanently in another country (different story if you're there for a 2 year stay etc...) then I would support that country. If they're so proud of being Greek/Cypriot/Serbian/whatever, then why leave there, and come here?

No, it's not. I am Australian, a citizen who lives here and supports my natonal players. These people live here in Australia (some are citizens/some aren't) and support these players from another country.

This is really a crime. Well, I never understood nationalism, and particularly not in sports. I chose my favourite players according to their tennis firstly and for personal resaons secondly. Their nationality means nothing to me. Try that and you will enjoy tennis much more. :p

What's wrong with being proud of your heritage? Greece is a small country so of course us Greeks/Cypriots get excited when we achieve something in sports
I'm a Greek-American, I root for both countries in sports but I root for Greece more because it is a smaller country and they don't win much aside from basketball games
Same with the Serbians

And I'm sure that most of these Greek-Australians are raised more Greek than Australian

The only time you should feel obliged to support your country should be davis cup and olympics only..
Otherwise supporting someone just because they come from your country is stupid, if davydenko played murray i would want davydenko to win every time yet I have no affiliation with russia at all.

Players of whatever sport choose whether to play for their country of birth or country of residence (with a qualifying period in some cases) so why shouldn't fans have the same choice?

Some 20 years ago the politician Norman Tebbit urged British nationals of Indian descent to support England when they played against India at cricket, to demonstrate their loyalty, and this caused uproar. Fortunately very few took his advice.

If Australian Greeks and Cypriots choose to support Baghdatis, that is their right.

Give me a fucking break~ I'm English decent, born and raised in Australia. Even I wouldn't say stupid shit like that. In fact no normal person living in Australia would say that, it's clear racism. A person claiming to be an Australian who knows and shows a little respect to the history of the country will never say something of such fking stupidity. So clearly you're not as "Australian" as you claim you be. Retard.

Hewitt may not be the same player as he was before but i don't see him loosing against low quality brainless opposition like Baggy in his home ground yet.
Bet for the Hew to take it in straights.
And for an encore he might do it emphatically so that this clown realizes he has no place in modern tennis now.
That's it folks Baggy is a fossil,a remenant junk of old time crap tennis.Hide it or fake it, you can't deny it.

As much as I want to see Hewitt win I think Baggy will mop the floor with him this time. The crowd will be fun. I hope its a battle but Hewitt did not impress me against Young and he will not get away with blowing leads as easilly against Baggy. Baggy is starting to look like his finalist form and Hewitt looks like he did the year he lost to in the 2nd round (I think it was 2nd round to Vic).

Baggy vs Federer might be fun too. I dont want to see Hewitt get beat by Fed anymore in this lifetime.

To add to everything that has been said on this topic already, have you ever considered that it might not be just Greek/Cypriot thing vs Australian. He's a well-liked guy who played quite a few high-quality epic matches. Are you sure there are no Australians of non-Greek origin who prefer him? In any case, it's not DC or Olympics. It's not a national event in any way.

BTW, I think Marcos will take this one, either relatively easy or in another epic

To answer the thread question, if Baggy is sufficiently fit he should get the better of Hewitt imo. Wasn't nice to see his pain in those final minutes against Ferrer, but considering how well a couple of the other players have bounced back from similar circumstances this week I'd be wary of writing Baggy off.
