Jarkko .

Not well played, he led the fourth with a break and had a match point at 5-2* or 5*-3, had a drive volley and hit it straight to Serra :o. He also had another match point at 5-4*

Then he took a nasty fall at 5-4 and twisted his ankle... He got it taped and played ok afterwards. Serra took a timeout before the tiebreak and got a MASSAGE... What was the reason, since cramps are no longer valid?

Jarkko saved one MP at 4*-5 in the final set and then wasted numerous break points at 5-5... Serra finally took it.

Jarkko has a poor record against Serra but he usually plays well at the Slams in best of five... I'm very disappointed... He needed the points since the Sydney final points fell off. Serves him right in a sense though, he let Serra dominate the rallies and waited for the errors.

104 Unforced errors from Serra :o

Murray should win 6-1 6-0 6-0 against Serra or something like that.

The worst defeat in Niemine's career.

Disgraceful result for Jarkko. He choked on many of the match points and break points.

Two straight five-setters for Serra. Murray just might get a shot at Nadal next week. It could be interesting.

A clash between 2 absolute non-factors for the title
Both might as well have not shown up to play... would not have made a difference.

According to your logic AO should just have 3 matches, from the semis to the finals with the top 4 seeds

Serra's diving volley to save bp at 5-5 was magical. It was hilarious indeed. He is so helpless at the net and then this.

Serra had never won a match in 5 sets before this Australian Open. Two in a row now.

Yeah, I mean, why do we even have a first week in slams? Just give the defending champion and finalist a BYE into the final. No, wait, they don't even need to play. We can do the usual cointoss to decide the winner and head straight to the trophy ceremony.

Obviously it wasn't more than slight cramping and he took a massage to recover. It looked like Jarkko didn't like this timeout either.

Nieminen is a complete clown... lost my money :(

Great effort to waste a break up and several MPs in the fourth... and this smash at 4-4 in the breaker
Numerous BPs in the fifth at 5-5... i still can not realise it.

Jarkko :smash:

Great fight from both players. One of Jarkko's worst losses for ages. Result was painfull after such a fight and all those missed chances . Hopefully that ankle injury isn't anything serious...

I always pull for Jarkko because he is a throwback but this was the strangest match of the tournament so far for me. Jarkko was being aggresive and winning the match and then decided to pull back???????? I gues to let Serra back in to win the match???? I am starting to think that Jarkko is a tad bit looney. Unexpected from one of the tactician of the game.

Well yeah, IMO very unsportsmanlike.

As unsportsmanlike as faking a severe ankle twist as Jarkko did.

I was at this match, Nieminen had enough chances to put this to bed in 4 sets and should have done so.

No faking at all in the twist of the ankle, it was right in front of me. Nieminen too passive when he had his chances, though Serra pulled off a brilliant angled backhand drop volley off the shoelaces when break point down in the 5th.

Jarkko is usually quite an intelligent player, but losing to Serra one of the worst players ever is pretty lame duck shit.

According to his reaction, I thought it was really bad. But in TV replays is shown he twisted it very slightly and of course he could run no probs from the first point after that. Didn´t like this piece of sportsmanship.

His ankle got stuck, as he was trying to change direction. He was lucky that he was able to play on, stuff like this can be serious and maybe he should tape the ankles before the matches.

Serra was the one who pulled the dog act getting a treatment for cramps, then again these umpires don't know how to enforce rules most of the time.

It's a bad matchup I feel... Jarkko loses to him pretty often, twice last season.

David, didn't see the replays but he has had severe ankle problems in the past and he is wearing ankle supporters... So he might've gotten real scared. He was really pissed too, hitting his raquet against the net post/umpire's chair when walking to his chair after the incident.

I don't know where you're getting 4 match points from. I just watched the replay on ESPN360 and I'm 100% sure it was only 2. Jarkko only had one on serve at *5-3 which was the drive volley you mentioned. The other came at 6-5* when he dumped an absolute pussy return into the net off a second serve. Serra won the next 3 points on both of those occasions. He also held to 30 at *2-5 and after one deuce at *4-5 after Jarkko fell.

In any event, really bad loss for Jarkko. He gets so tight in a winning position sometimes. :smash:

Thanks for this :yeah: atptennis.com also delivered info about 2 mp's... I had seen on scoreboard he had mp at *5:3, next time when I saw it, they were playing fifth set, and it was a shocker for me because Nieminen doesn't lose those sets... But well, every player during long career is supposed to lose at least one five-setter despite holding MP to win in 3, 4 or 5 :o

Yes, it was a miracle he won a match against Jamie Delgado at Wimbledon 2002. Nico wasted double match point in the third set only to save 4 match points from 3:5 in the fifth :D

Yes you're right, I just didn't think anyone would notice anymore . Must've gotten confused when Jarkko had 3 consecutive break points in the fourth at one time (I think? Not so sure anymore...) and mistakenly remembered those as match points.
