Such a gutsy performance from Youzhny. He dug deeper and found a way to win when he was cramping. Don't feel bad for Gasquet either really, as he has lost these types of matches in the past, and had several chances to win this match. He isn't tough enough mentally or physically.

I just hope Richie is fine with his mentality, because it's good to see that his FH has quite major improvements (even though still lots of moonballs at times).

Now he just needs to work on improving that serve percentage and fitness. I hope this doesn't undo all the hard work done by eroding his confidence though.

the final game was make or break for youzhny, if he didn't break gasquet's serve then, there was no way he was going to last another 15 minutes on court. good win for him coming back from 2 sets down and battling through cramps. gasquet did sort of check out at that last game which was perfect for youzhny. sorry for the frenchie to lose in similar fashion 2 years in a row. I did not watch the first 3 sets but both played some very good points in the last two sets.

What a stud this Colonel. Missed most of the match. But from watching the end it looked like Gasquet was finished physically, and the match was being decided by whether Misha could hit more winners than errors. Shame they had to play each other so early.

Just an awesome match, I watched the last two sets.
Gasquet should of won it in 3 or 4 or 5 at worst, but he is one of the biggest headcases in top100 at the moment. Choke of the year so far - and you know I'm a rational poster who rarely uses this word + a PHM fan :)

They were both suffering and cramping towards the end, Youzhny even more...Richie just couldn't take advantage of that and he was too defensive or scared to hit the ball hard. And with Youzhny fighting like crazy there was only one winner on the end.
Richie was 4-2 up in the fifth and even if he was 4-0, I'm quite sure he would lose this.

It was a great match, dramatic and high quality. I'm glad I was there and stayed till the end, even though I have to work early tomorrow.

Gasquet looked in control for the first two sets and a half, and I only started to think Misha could win when he saved two match points in the 4th set. 2nd match point was a choke from Gasquet, the first was saved by Youzhny. In the end Youzhny was the more solid player and physically and mentally stronger than Gasquet, who was really struggling at the end and looking like he had cramps. Match lasted almost 5 hours.

It's so disheartening to know that Gasquet loses most of these important matches because he can't close them out. He always has the lead and then folds. Exactly the same result as last year wasting chances and match points to players obviously not as talented as he is. Maybe he should concentrate on the THIRD set since he's gotten in this pattern lately of losing the last 3 after winning the first 2.

What a sad result. Ritchie would have needed this for his confidence, after all that happened last year. Hope he gets over it.

Yeah, it's nice to have interesting first round matches, but it sucks when it's two players I like against each other! I'm happy for Youzhny's win :D, but sad for Gasquet's loss. :( It's very bipolar.

Aftr watching the fourth and fifth set, I have to say Youzhny totally deserved it. After they both started suffering from cramps, Richie did pretty much nothing, whereas Youzhny played nice angles and low slices, and made Gasquet use his feet even more. It was only a matter of time he won it. Paradoxically, the decisive point seemed to have been Youzhny´s netted drop shot in the first point of the last game. He lost the point, but made Gasquet run from way back to the net. Ritchie´s legs must have been burning, and it was pretty much over after that. Very smart display from the Colonel.

This proves Richard should have been banned for 2 years and maybe she would have come back a lot hungrier.

Entertaining drama, it went for the guy that wanted it more in the end

I think you just have to go along for the ride and resign yourself to heart break and inexplicable losses. It's the only way to cope. The loss against murray at wimby was a lot worse than this one.

nothing but utter torment and distraught when I look at Gasguet play. Has the gut ever enjoyed tennis. Some major internal turmoil going on there. Its sad becuase he is probably the most talented guy on the tour and does not seem to be arrogant about it. Its really hard for me to watch him and not feel for the guy. I think he would be better off just going coachless for a while.

I am glad he is back though. Nobody moves quite like Gasguet. Reminds me of a Micheal Chang but his upper body is frozen like a statue.
