Great debut to win first match in a Grand Slam event over one of the most experienced players who left in the game.

Ferrero had to be injured from the middle of third set or from the start of the fourth, it's impossible from him to lose 1-6 1-6 to Dodig playing even below normal standards.

BTW, Ferrero at US Open '09 beat Petzschner after very similar scoreline.

Not an injury... although it will be made to look like one, once the excuses start pouring in.JCF should be sitting pretty in home, with kids and all, leading a nicely retired life, not giving brainstrokes to the viewers with his pathetic play... then again, this is my opinion.

I'm assuming that ankle was the cause of the severity of the last couple of sets at least. Get well soon JCF, well done Dodig.

According to Ferrero Forever, his ankle was fine. See the AO match reports thread

yeah, well it looked fine from my perspective anyway. JC was beyond mad at himself, you could see it in his eyes, he looked really ashamed and furious. He was moving really well, maybe it was bothering him a bit, because I obviously can't sense whats he's feeling inside, but he didn't show any sense of serious injury. The trainer wasn't called out or anything, I really just think he got overconfident, and if thats the case then he deserves to be on the next plane home. I know thats harsh, but this was just an awful loss.

Bizarre scoreline. Kudos to JC for finishing the match, if it was down to the ankle.
Well done Dodig.

I thought people were saying that to JCF last year, than he went on to win a tournament and rise to No23

I'm not sure whether this related to his ankle, but after the 3rd set JCF's coach handed (what looked like a pill) to him and JCF took it. So it may have been a painkiller (just my guess!) The ankle might've bothered him but not severe enough to call a trainer or whatever. He did start to touch it a lot more from then on.

Watched a bit of this in the 2nd, would of had to been injury or something because Dodig was struggling out there

Time to retire because he lost a 5 set match on a bum ankle which possibly/likely caused this result? Rigggght.

Get well soon JCF.

Glad I wasn't there to see this. If JC took a pill as someone suggests, then case closed - down for the count. The pill might have eased the pain and perhaps made him tired as well. The guy is so physically fragile; it's just a pity.

After the third set, that is a real collapse. As people have said I can only imagine his ankle must have played some part in sets 4 and 5 :(

I believe it's JCF's 3rd career loss from two sets up. From the reports here it sounds like more of a mental than physical breakdown. He had no AO points to defend but I hope it doesn't lead to similar results later this season (a la Safin 2009).
