In last year Wimby match Granollers had his chances and few weeks ago played really well in Chennai . Bad match for Robin and not such a big surprise

MG-P showed signs of big improvement vs Cilic, this is good progress.

Decent draw too, maybe Falla next, then Almugro/Malisse/Becker, then Tsonga (who will be laughing, he's nearly guaranteed a spot in the QFs now).

That decision to whore up points in a remote Russian challenger to get direct entry into AO main draw was well thought out by Marcel. Hope he gets to top 50 again.

As for Robin, you cannot only lose in slams to Federer. I'm sure he'll bounce back after a slow start to the year.

Shame on Granollers for losing the first two sets. Söderling has never been crazy about the conditions in Melbourne, and it didn't exactly help his cause when the Plexicushion courts were laid. He looked about as comfortable as a slug in a salt evaporation pond for most of the match.

Good on Marcel for the manner in which he kept going in the fifth despite whatever injury he nursed. Hopefully Robin will take a long rest now for the sake of his elbow. I don't know if it bothered him today, but still.

Rafa took his mojo back in abu dhabi. Sucks for Robin. Seriously I hope he can continue last years form but not a good start.

Soderling doesn't have any good results in AO, that combined with the fitness issues and the conditions, and this result isn't overwhelmingly surprising. Soderling is overhyped in a major way by many people.

I only hope Marcel takes advantage of this opportunity. He has chances to make the 4th round here now.

Andi-M
01-19-2010, 12:54 PM
Gutted for Soda can't believe he lost to Granollers??? What happened? A fit and healthy Sod would win this one surely!

Oh well at least Tsonga's section is a bit lighter now but still Haas could just as easily come through instead of Jo.

All I saw was the 5th set unfortunately and Soderling looked absolutely awful, going for ridiculous forehands, anything to shorten the point. It's true he didn't look "himself" of the past half year but is that the case of something legitimately being wrong or just not able to deal with the conditions?

Everko
01-19-2010, 03:18 PM
Us Nadal fans have been telling you guys that Soderling was a fluke. We know when our player is hurt and he was hurt vs Soderling that's why he won in RG. Now Soderling will fall faster than the speed of light in space.

Don't know if he was 100% or not, but he never liked playing in Australia anyway. The conditions don't suit him. Besides, there are some obvious signs he's going to have a letdown year. Still, a bad loss considering MGP on hardcourts is mediocre at best.

Norman said on his blog Soderling totally went out of gas after two hours. Nothing left in the tank. Didn't see the match, but I guess there's something wrong with Toad, more than just the wrist.

It's sad really. He played awesome in WTF, but seemingly hasn't been able to get the right preparation for AO. Am really disappointed in Toad's team to be honest.

To improve his Grand Slam results are all that matters at this stage. They should keep that in mind all the time.

this is a particular way to see that. Soderling did nothing else in his life than reaching that French Open final. Unless until now. He reminds me in many ways to what Mikael Pernfors did (with all my respects to Pernfors indeed!). :worship:
