Anyone who is going to the AO feel free to post the matches they have seen, pics or whatever from the event. As I take shit photos not many of mine are going up.

I was at the qualies today.

The AO fashion gurus have decided to deck the umpires out in lime green, well allegedly it's lime green but in fact it blends with the tennis balls, so it's tennis ball green and Malisse would have another reason to get annoyed on court. The ballkids are wearing hot pink well they will stand out for sure.

Koubek vs. DeHeart

At 4-4 15 all in the 1st set deHeart says "hey these balls are flat", then tosses them to Koubek who has that usual half asleep expression and then agrees. After that Koubek is defending well and pressing deHeart into going for more shots and in the process making more errors. Koubek hits a forehand down the line on his set point to take it 7-5.

deHeart hitting some average slice backhands and Koubek some cannon fodder dropshots, he manages to get the break early in the 2nd.

As he pressed for the double break he started the very loud grunts, the grunting sounded like a Mercedes but had the power of a Lada, then deHeart gets into the act as well with the over grunting he is trying to be a Harley and ends up being a Vespa.

Koubek stepped it up after losing his break of serve and played some excellent passing shots along with good defence broke at 5-4, then served it out easily.

Dimitrov vs. Kendrick

Tough match for the Bulgarian and didn't get to see much, just from 2-3 in the 3rd set. It was basically Dimitrov hitting a winner, then an error with Lundgren having a bemused look but still encouraging him. Kendrick wasn't being too mouthy this time and when he had the chance, he came forward to the net to finish the points off. His extra experience was the main thing that got him over the line in this one.

Phau vs. del Bonis

Phau the guy who lost to cockchimp Klein in the 1st round last year and one of the fastest guys on tour against the Argentine. Del bonis wasn't playing too badly, hitting some heavy shots but had a concentration lapse in the 2nd set to go down 4-0, and ended up losing that one 7-5. Phau the little running machine just got too many shots back into court.

Millman vs. Vagnozzi

Millman always had this match in control and Vagnozzi today played like Cipolla, except he had a topspin forehand and also his touch volleys were successful. Millman didn't serve too well, but was solid from the baseline and he defended well when Vagnozi could use his forehand.

It was one of those matches where it was clear who was going to win, but at this time of the day it was very difficult with the wind and the sun making an appearance as it started out cloudy.

Dustin Brown vs. Klec

Dreddy had enough money to afford the plane ticket as it has not been easily financially for him on the tour. The hair was immaculate and the game was very varied, there were some chip shots, a few dinks, then some big forehands and lobs, then some of the biggest and easiest misses. Dustin was getting a bit fired up there and he was doing his swearing in German. It was one of the matches, just happy to get it over with. At times he served well, then at others the big serve went missing as he and Klec traded breaks, but Dustin was able to focus long enough to get the win.

Kavcic vs. Soeda

This match had the Silver Fox Sanguinetti coach of Soeda and the first match of the year for the animated Slovene. This was a very hard fought match with extended rallies. Kavcic didn't play a very smart match, he was always hitting to the open court and Soeda runs everything down always leaning to that side, yet Kavcic only went back behind him once in the whole match and won the point while doing so. Kavcic was using his forehand to set the play up and move Soeda around and he was trying to make the play for the majority of the match.

Kavcic through some quality defensive skills and errors from the tiring Soeda breaks for 5-3, but plays a clown game to get broken. The self commentary gets louder and louder, but Kavcic manages to hit a winning shot to take the match. The coach wrote about 30 pages on this.

Malisse made the 2nd set harder for himself against Kuznetsov, he really should qualify comfortably here and it's a relief to him that he is back out there playing on the proper court and not the law court.

Nadal was around watching Marc Lopez play, it was the time I left that match, but there is evidence he was there as Peta took pics.

Judging from his form here in Săo Paulo, Ramond should stand a chance of qualifying.

Karol Beck's shit break point percentage cost him against Bachinger, served for the match and lost that game easily.

Young started with 2 double faults as Marc Lopez breaks, then DY breaks back. Once DY got the 1st set, Lopez was looking for some empanadas.

bit of info on Boggo/Ward matches, from LTA:

Journeying outside to watch a bit of Boggo in action, I heard a very loud rambunctious noise, rather like a market place in Delhi. Getting louder and louder as I approached the Brit's court, it appeared that the court and the noise were one and the same.

Poor Boggo was getting attacked on every point by what seemed to be the entire Turkish population of Melbourne, and quickly slumped to a 6-4, 6-4 defeat. Deary me.

James Ward meanwhile, taking on Ukrainian Ilya Marchenko, looked to be having much better luck. At 3-3 in the first set, he had several opportunities to break the baby faced backwards cap-wearing European, only to be denied by a couple of terrible line calls. I'm no umpire and even I could see them bounce rather far out.

The calls seemed to rock Wardy's confidence, and from then on, Marchenko stepped up a gear, holding onto the first set 6-3, and getting an early break to take the second set and the match 6-4. Deary me mark 2.

Saw the legend of Koellerer today, this should make Jordan happy. He had some problems with the stomach muscles, but is fine now.

Machado was giving shit to Pascal Maria during the match, as some of the calls have been a bit poor. After he lost to Bogomolov Jr, he had a go for about 3-4 minutes.

Yeah poor boggo they were so loud at one point when i was watching ebden on the next court i couldnt even here the guy i was sitting next too talk!! Having said that he did make some stupid mistakes at times and let his opponent run him around way too much!!

Ward was robbed, Marchenko knew it even he rolled his eyes at one of those line calls!! Unfortunately thats part of tennis and he will have to deal with it better than he did today, having said that those couple of lines crew especially that guy should be sent home!!

Yeah its annoying you cant get up to the other cours near hisense!! too me they should have the venue set up and ready to operate by late last week, its not a good look to have people working and grinders going off all day while there are matches on even if it is just qualies!!

Any Suzuki-Delgado insights? Did you get to see it? :)

I watched a bit Suzuki was just grinding him down drawing Delgado into very long rallies. His backhand was very solid today, but he will need to step up a gear if he is to challenge in the next match.

I only heard the match Caio. I was watching Millman/Oswald. Both Ebden and Millman came back 3-5 in the 3rd set to win 7-5.

OMG How good were those wins, pitty Dayne Kelly couldnt also sneak out a victory although he did a bit better than i thought he would!!

Where were u sitting in these matches??

Oh and a side note, whoever Oswalds coach is, so arrogant, laughing at Millman and coaching Philip every time the umpire looked away when he was down the city end of the court....who had the last laugh mate, not you pack ya bags and see ya later!!

Can you tell me how Przysiezny played? Is he still at his top form from the end of last season?

I watched his match from the 2nd set onwards. In other words as I soon I turned up he started playing better.

He was playing some good tennis, moving the ball around well and coming to the net to finish the point off. It was obvious that he was better than Okun in the rallies, but he was making some mistakes and let Okun hang around. The last set was better and Okun was crushed mentally and Przysiezny finished well.

Will be a tough match between he and Ebden in the last round.

Agreed and the answer I got was directly from Tiley as I saw him walking around. So I thought fuck this ask what's going on.

I didn't see the Ebden match as I was at the Millman one. I was on the opposite side of the coaches. He plays Marchenko next and he beat him in quals last year, things are a bit different now.

Bottom half of the draw plays on Monday.

Ahhh so the ramp is how we get to 16-22 + Hisense now instead of walking down those stairs where all the Nike and Head ect stands used to be? Why have they blocked that off? Seems a bit stupid, and I know I'm being repetitive but shouldn't they have thought this through earlier? I mean they had 12 months...

Well my less than satisfactory qualies report was that I went there trying to see Ferrero practice just in case he doesn't play next week, when I saw that you couldn't get through to the other half of the courts (which you could do last year), I decided to try and sneak down the ramp, got a quarter of the way down until security saw me and asked to see my non-existant pass, so I cracked it and went to Kooyong instead:) I did see Laura Robson though for a good 2 seconds:D

I was watching his match and Hocevar's they were on at the same time next to each other. Louk has a loud grunt and changes between vamos and allez when he won a big point.

Hard him to choke, as they can't find his neck. He should win his last match and hardly any Irish fans there, if he makes MD, then they will show up.

hehe, didn't think so. melbourne is full of irish bums doing nothing. pity no one ever heard of him. It's true he's not very well-endowed in the neck department.

Hocevar looks like Nalbandian except he is in shape. He fights hard and not an easy one to call. Bachinger served for it at 5-3 in the 3rd, but choked and Hocevar kept battling and got it done.

Dreddy Brown's match was quite full and he fucked up. Lead *4-3 in the 3rd and missed every 1st serve in that game.

Action Jackson

Yes, he saved 3 mps. The fact he has a massive serve, but a very low ball toss and missed all of them.

He had the crowd on his side and speaking of crowd faves. The old warhorse Sirianni down a set and a break to win in 3.

Can you tell me how Przysiezny played? Is he still at his top form from the end of last season?
He was playing absolute shit in the first set yesterday (I went to both matches) and it looked like Okun would run away with it. Michal was having trouble getting the ball over the net.. seriously, SO many would hit the top of the net and not go over, but did well to fight back and Okun basically gave up by the end of the match. Will be an interesting match against Ebden, who was awesome fighting back for his win yesterday, and will have a lot of support. Tomorrow I'll be cheering on the Aussie.
And why the freaking heck are the ball boys wearing pink?? Hopeless. And can someone take a pic of the umpires, I want to see how horrible they are too.
Hmm yes I can oblige with that... I tend to take photos of Molina quite consistently :p
http://img2.menstennisforums.com/868/Enric2.jpg
I also had a photo with him and he commented to me afterwards that "You'll change the colour of the shirt with photoshop on the computer right? I said "You don't like it? You look like a tennis ball??" and he laughed and said he'd heard that before  So yeah, it's not popular with the umpires but I actually kinda like it :p

Chair umpires are in a different colour to the linesmen for the first time - apparently they are doing it like that as they do at RG because it means if a player has a question for an official they can ask a chair umpire when they see them around because they will have more knowledge of knowing the right answer.
What's wrong with my comment? So, if I give you advice in public, "try to take a sharper photo," you're going to call me an "idiot?" Is your ego so high, you can't take an advice? I seriously doubt you'll have the confidence to insult like that in public for no reason. It was just an advice, that's all.
Well I've only posted one photo in here... which wasn't great because of the lighting (sun can provide bad lighting sometimes you know?) but I've been showing my photos from AO since 2005 and no one has ever had problems with them.

Any Suzuki-Delgado insights? Did you get to see it? :)

I got to see most of this match (missed a bit at the start). Always a pleasure to watch Suzuki's net game. The points were not really lasting long as Suzuki was always coming to the net at the first opportunity. The first set was pretty even, except Suzuki could not take a break point to save his life. Delgado converted one break point and that was the set. In the 2nd set Suzuki was also pathetic on his BPs, most of the time missing the return on the 2nd serve. Suzuki was not playing his best, a lot of his backhand chips in particular were floating way long, and a lot of the time he was passed on Delgado's return as his serve was not good enough. Delgado broke serve, but then handed back the break with some errors. Towards the end of the 2nd set Suzuki was playing better and gaining the upper hand, and was able to win the breaker. Delgado's fortunes depended on how he was serving. Most of the time he was missing first serves, but when he got them in he was usually winning the games. Delgado started the 3rd set serving well, but then started missing his serves again which allowed Suzuki to get two breaks and win the match.

Here is my brief report from Friday:

Sirianni def Minar

Joe Sirianni, what a champion. I arrived to find him down 6-1 3-1, and he really fought tooth and nail to get it back level and then to finally win the set. He was using all the variety, chips, slices and dinks as usual, and I can't see how Minar was leading in the first place as he was nothing special. Joe was up an early break in the 3rd, but let it go, but later was able to break again and served out the match in style with many 1st serves in. Joe had a lot of crowd support and it was great to see him get the victory.

Rufin def Brown

It was great to finally see the dreads in person. Brown was quite impressive actually, he has a big serve and also a great forehand, and is quite capable at the net. He has the game to definitely go further. He hit many winners but lost due to making a few loose shots and missed volleys at bad moments. Brown was up 5-3 in the 2nd set but let it go. Rufin had match point in the TB but Brown saved it with a big serve and then carried on to win the TB. He really knows how to get fired up too. In the 3rd set Brown saved quite a few match points, one was with a heroic dive volley which Rufin could not retrieve. Rufin did not really impress me that much, he doesn't seem to have anything special in his game. He was not very aggressive in the points and spent all his time counterpunching and being reasonably consistent in the rallies.

Malisse def Fischer

I came over to watch this match after I was on another court and repeatedly kept hearing Malisse shouting and hitting the backboard. He didn't display any of his usual antics when I was there though. From what I saw of Malisse was playing well, and he lifted and got the job done when he had to against the Austrian, who looks so pale and skinny for a tennis player. Malisse again looks like one of the better players in quallies.

Young def Suzuki 7-6 7-6

Suzuki served for the 1st set twice but choked and failed to close it out, then went down badly in the tiebreak. In the 2nd set Suzuki also had opportunities on Young's serve but it went to a TB which he lost. Young played quite well and hit some good passing winners.

Dodig def Sirianni

They had a really tough tiebreak in the first set, and after losing the tiebreak Sirianni's previous tough matches caught up with him and he just didn't have enough left in the tank in the 2nd set to put up another fight, and he went down easily.

Kavcic vs. Devvarman

This one was full of long rallies with Somdev playing not to miss and Kavcic being patient but unlike Devvarman decided to go for his shots when the opportunities arose.

With this play Kavcic was able to take the first set. The forehand was doing most of the damage. He then had an early break, had chances for the double break but was unable to so. Then Kavcic lost concentration and Somdev continued not to miss and found himself up 5-3, then got broken easily and Kavcic held for 5-5.

Then the fun and games started as Kavcic called for the trainer, wasn't sure what for at the time, but I found out later it was something to do with him seizing up literally with the pins and needles. It took ages for the trainer to come out and assess it. He gets that done and Somdev is pissed off big time.

It's get to the TB and Kavcic going for his shots got him into the main draw. Somdev refused to shake his hand and said when they went off "Looks like he is dying out there now".

gonzalez VS Rochus: Really enjoyable match, crowd atmosphere was fantastic. gonzo really doesn't look like he's in fantastic form, but he did enough to get the job done. the rain was really annoying because it stopped and started play. Wasn't a great match, but I really enjoyed it.

Del Potro VS Russell: this one was quite good too. they were both hitting the ball ridiculously hard and making some great angles, but there were many breaks of serve, and you could never tell if Del Potro was 100% in control of the match. Some really dodgy umpiring decisions regarding challenges really affected Del Potro, and he only started to play well again once he came to terms with the bad calls.

Other Comments: Missed Ferrero's practice with hewitt which annoyed me silly! Rain is really annoying and I got drenched. the security is awful, restricting fan access to players (and vice versa). I saw some kids yell out to Almagro for an autograph, but the security guards didn't want Almagro to sign for them, so Almagro had to motion to the kids to meet them around the side so he could do it for them. And this grand Slam Oval thing is annoying, what was so wrong with the old ramps?

By the way, sorry for the bad capitalization of letters, my keyboard is being a bitch!

Every court is now accessible other than the indoors practice ones... not that there was much action on them today

Plus the courts with the big names on them (courts 16 and 17) have been destroyed for fans by the fan-unfriendly organisers because you can only watch them from one side of the court so it's impossible to see anything.. in the past you could watch from both sides and you could usually see something.

Hello everyone,

I am writing a blog this week on the Australian Open.

Yesterday I watched Gonzalez, Mayer/Petzschner, Del Potro and a bit of Santoro/Cilic.

The full report is on http://www.tennis-brain.com.

Here are some excerpts to hopefully increase the chances of people reading it: (Really, there is more than what I have posted on the page)

Fernando Gonzalez vs Olivier Rochus
It’s Fernando Gonzalez’s match against Olivier Rochus. Looking onto the stadium court, on first opinion, Gonzalez doesn’t really look like a player that wears his heart on his sleeve. He is volatile, and he has showed it in the past enough times before, but he looks too tightly strung to be fully taking in the experience. He’s an extremely intense character and almost singularly focused on his tennis. I prefer the more relaxed demeanour of Rochus, who comes off as being extremely genuine, with his own self-directed hand gestures and reactions to events in a way that is not too dissimilar to how Gilles Simon carries himself. (Read more (http://www.tennis-brain.com))

Philipp Petzschner vs Florian Mayer
Onto a more low key match, I headed over to see the all-German battle between Philipp Petzschner and Florian Mayer. Mayer was on his way to making a comeback, leading in the 4th set, making me feel like a conditional supporter, now that Mayer was obviously playing well enough to be “worth watching”.

I billed this as the battle of the slice backhands, though it didn’t end up being 100% correct. Mayer likes his two-handed backhand, and hits through it most of the time, though he does possess the variety to throw in enough slice backhands for it to be a decent description of the match. You would think from the one-sidedness of the scoreline that it could have been a self-destructive match. (Read more (http://www.tennis-brain.com))

Juan Martin Del Potro vs Michael Russell
For me, I am not sure whether I can objectively report on Juan Martin Del Potro’s match against Michael Russell because I definitely wished I could have been somewhere else. It’s not like I lost interest in it immediately, but as soon as I did, it was always going to be difficult for the players to win me over again.

It was midway in the first set when I arrived there, and there were hardly any rallies going on. Del Potro was dominant on serve, and Russell seemed incredibly nervous that on one point he seemed to have tangled himself up, trying to move for a particular shot. I just don’t think that Russell, being a counterpuncher, should be making this many errors. The first thing I noticed when I was first able to observe a rally, was how Del Potro moves so much better now than the last time I saw him. Note that this was an initial reaction, not the final one, because I think he got more sluggish as the match went on.
(Read more (http://www.tennis-brain.com))

Fabrice Santoro vs Marin Cilic

Action Jackson

As for the del Potro match. Russell was outclassed but there were some excellent rallies and points in this one.

Apart from the 3rd set which he won, everytime Russell broke he lost serve immediately. He pressed more on his serve than usual, because if he didn't hit a good second serve, then he was going to be fodder for del Potro and this happened more often than not.

Russell hit some excellent returns, there was a screaming backhand down the line winner as del Potro smacks an off forehand and Russell just redirects down the line for the winner.

Del Potro will be better for the workout in this one and as they say luck of the draw as Russell would have beaten a lot of players on this showing. The key is for guys like this to try and keep playing well when the draws become a bit easier.

Juan Carlos Ferrero VS Ivan Dodig: I'm furious with Juan Carlos about this one. he was KILLINg Dodig for the first 2 sets, and if anyone would have told me JC would lose, I would have laughed in their face. But then to me it seems like he got overconfident, and lowered his level. Dodig did not raise his. And then JC couldn't find his game again, and Dodig did really well not to lose his cool. I'm furious with JC because it was his match to win, his ankle was totally fine, it was just him. he deserved to lose the match, and I'm not upset that he lost, just really angry (and he seemed really angry too).

By the way, security guys were pricks again, not letting me have a photo with JC during his practice session, even though JC said yes, they made him just keep on walking. Other than all that, it was a good day, and Monaco rocked!

By the way, security guys were pricks again, not letting me have a photo with JC during his practice session, even though JC said yes, they made him just keep on walking. Other than all that, it was a good day, and Monaco rocked!

This is the exact opposite of his performance against Petzschner in the second round at last year's US Open. JC lost the first two sets and came back to win it in five against a much tougher opponent. JC's resilience was impressive and I thought then that in his "old age", he'd conquered the mental game yet again. Losing the last two sets 6-1 6-1 after being up two sets? It had to be a physical problem. Someone said they saw him take a pill. Did you see that?

Frankly, I feel more sorry for you than for him. I know first hand how frustrating it can be to watch his matches. I don't eat for fear he'll give me indigestion. ;)

Edited to add: Did he recognize you when you signaled for a picture? Damn shame about the tight security.

The Koellerer match was hilarious the court was packed on both sides and it was 10 deep just to see the Crazy Dani and he put on a show.

Yes this match was classic and not because of the tennis. Koellerer certainly didn't disappoint.

They should never have put this match on Court 4, with hardly any seats or spectator room. The organisers are oblivious to the massive drawcard that is Crazy Dani :(

I didn't see him take a pill, but thats not to say that he didn't. I still doubt that it was a physical problem, but thats just my view. And yes it was an awful match, coz I went from relief and happiness (Kat was sitting next to me and did the same) to absolute fury. And yes he did recognize me, he came up to me and said hi while he was practicing.

Now, todays match report Gonzalez VS Ilhan: gonzalez is really really hot! not much else needs to be said...

As if! the crowd atmosphere was enormous, and despite there being another brawl, it was so much fun! From my perspective, the Chileans were just making heaps of noise throughout the whole match, but the Turkish fans refused to shut up after the umpire asked them many times to. When the match was over, Ilhan had left the court, and the turks just stayed there staring at the Chileans. I knew at that moment something was gonna happen, so I left, but not before seeing the flare that was lit from the Chilean crowd. All I can say was that this match was really fun (what can I say, chaos is exciting), and I now have an even bigger crush on Gonzo

EDIT: Also want to add that during the match, there were about 4 security guards on every entry point, so the game had heaps of security, and like usual they failed to prevent trouble. They've been pricks and done nothing useful simultaneously

He got a code violation for swearing and then complained to Fergus Murphy about Veic swearing in Croatian. Got a warning for racquet abuse and lost the point and game.

Veic said he kicked one on the full and Koellerer bragging about his football skills. There were three supervisors as well as other players watching.

Olivier Rochus was one of the players who made time in his schedule just to attend this match and laugh at Koellerer's antics.

I wish I could understand German, there were a few people who could understand what Dani was muttering to himself and were absolutely cracking up at everything.

Dani thought there was a let at one point, he walked up to Fergus Murphy and asked if the machine was working, and Murphy assured him it was. He says "switch it on, switch it on", Fergus is baited into doing so, then Dani whacks the top of the net really hard, and says "Did you hear that?"

After getting broken at 4-4 in the 5th, Dani says to Veic at the net something like "Pray for all your luck"

The day was worth the price of my $20 ground pass just for this and later the great Gasquet vs Youznhy match.

I saw the 2nd half of the 3rd set of Ryan Harrison vs Tipsarevic. Harrison was reasonably consistent and was just putting every ball back into play, and Janko was either making winners or unforced errors. Harrison had not enough game to get a set off Tipsarevic.

Koellerer did an underarm serve in the 1st set.

The Croat fans during the Cilic/Wawrinka match were fine yet there were some heavy handed shit.

Another annoying thing are idiots who just sit at the one court and don't cheer or even watch the matches because they are waiting for a match that is scheduled 3 matches afterwards, while people can't get into the ones they want.

Yes the overcrowding on the outside courts is ridiculous, and it is getting worse every year.

The thing is if there is a match you really want to see your only chance now is to get on the court two matches early.

Usually there is no chance of getting on the Margaret Court Arena in the day, today there were huge lines on every entrance of MCA and none of them were moving, I did not even bother.

Australian Open Day 6 match reports:
http://www.tennis-brain.com/2010/01/australian-open-day-6-blog.html

Reports of Davydenko, Djokovic, Baghdatis, Haas, Tsonga.

I agree about the overcrowding by the way. It was unbelievable how many people were there yesterday, that a lot of people ended up standing and walking around the grounds without getting to watch any matches, and as for the number of people that got to watch singles matches, that was even less.

For the last couple of days, it seems like whenever there's a men's match on the schedule, on the bigger showcourts, it ends up being filled up.

Went to the Sunday day session of RLA, which was a bit of a snoozefest. Would have rather been on Hisense but it was sold out on the day.

Hisense Saturday day session was disappointing too, I spent actually all my time on the outside courts.

From now on I'll be checking the schedule before spending a lot of money on tickets!

Thanks for everyone else's reports. I didn't really share as much as I'd have liked. Just didn't get enough time on the internet to do what I wanted - and I'm not much of a report writer. I'm still working on editing photos at the moment but I'll share them with anyone that is interested when they are done.

About middle Saturday - nightmare. I had to plonk myself down and watch a WTA match first up so I could be there for Pico/Davydenko.. and missed a match on an outside court I wanted to see in the process. I hate middle Saturday with a passion

Yes middle Saturday was awful. Had to watch the same WTA match Peta was talking about to see Pico, then had to miss Verdasco to go and get a seat to watch Gonzalez's doubles, had to wait half an hour in the queue, and was then tortured by another set of WTA crap.

as for the comments about over-crowding at melbourne park... i shrudder to think in another month or so i'll have to go through all that again :scared: this coming year they're promoting bands at the grand slam oval, too many people will be going but not for the tennis.
