the worst match I've ever seen in my life. Roddick is a pathetic choker.

Wow, chokes galore. Stepankek so hesistant on that set point in the TB.

Roddick blew so many chances, probably a good thing Steps served a double to end it.

Well done Andy. :yeah:

Roddick tried to take it to a 3rd set. Bull rushing the net on just about any approach shot. Andy was in a hurry to finish it for whatever reason. Let Radek get back into it twice. O well, A WIN IS A WIN!

Summed up Stepanek well. Played good tennis when the match was 'gone' (e.g. down a double break, down 5 MPs) but then when he actually got close enough to put himself in a winning position, tightened up.

Atrocious line-calling. There were many questionable calls in the second set tiebreak alone. Roddick complained to Murphy about the line calls being bad all week and that it is embarassing.

Shame that it ended like that after a great fight from Steps. Roddick got really tight.

Roddick's approach shots were particularly atrocious in this match, he was rushing the net like a mad man and Steps was taking advantage of that

Duck lead *5-2 in the second set and managed to get himself into a TB which he was winning as well but ended up having set points against :o

These two were really trying to outchoke the other and the fact that it ended with a DF is a perfect summary of how crappy the match was in that last set

This tournament definitely needs Hawk-Eye, Roddick should have won earlier on the TB and he was denied due to a bad calling, the linesjudges were atrocious all week long but specially in this match

Always good to see stepanek lose. But WTF was that Roddick from 4-0 in the 2nd set and 6-1 in the TB :tape: :help:

didn't see steps coming back, i stopped watching at 4-1 second set, turns out i just miss an ugly choke so im not to bothered.

well done roddick i felt he really wanted this tournament, thats why he probably got tight at the end.

Match was pretty choppy, and a bit strange to watch. Andy lost almost every point when he came to the net, and Steps must have lobbed him 10x - Andy looked very annoyed and anxious. I was really surprised to see Steps come back like that when Andy was so far up... didn't think Andy would lose his serve twice in one set. All in all, I kinda wish I just went to bed. :)

Oh, and they need a challenge system here... badly.

Larry and the missus were not amused. I can't even be happy about the win. Andy was lucky that he faced a worst choker than he.

The people who went to sleep early will be confused at the scoreline.

Really entertaining match in parts. I could not believe all the comebacks that Stepanek made in this match. The first set was great. I really enjoyed the variety from both players, a lot of net play and not too much hanging around the baseline. Roddick had plenty of opportunities to convert but Stepanek kept hanging on in the first set. Stepanek was terrible on all the important points. Yes, he has a reputation of getting tight but it's been a while since I've seen him do it to this extent. Double faulting away almost every single important point and playing terrible tie-breaks.

Stepanek was terrible on his first two service games in the second set, threw them away almost all with double faults. I think he was having trouble with his contact lenses, then when he came back from the bathroom break, he seemed fine again. You have to love how pumped up Stepanek was when he got his first break back as if he thought he had a great chance of winning the match. I don't think anyone else thought he did, then when he broke serve the second time I thought it was pretty amazing.

I liked Roddick's game plan and his attempts to play an all-court game. His forehand hasn't been as much of a point-ending shot as it is for some of the more aggressive players but he's been hitting it with good depth and penetration mostly. Except on his net approaches sometimes.

His net game was a little bit on and off. Seems like whenever a passing shot lands below the net, he has major trouble with it. He looked really tentative trying to serve out the match the second time, and I have no doubt that Stepanek pumping himself up made Roddick feel less secure than he could have been. Then Stepanek went overboard with the dropshots again, a common issue with him but in the end, he just didn't play well enough. Great fighting spirit, but his performance in the two tie-breaks were well below par. I think it was totally expected once Stepanek served a fault on his first serve on match point that he would double fault it away.

Besides not having a challenge system this Brisbane tournament is a great one to start the year though. I really have enjoyed it the past couple of years. I'm sure they will get the system set up for next year after the amount of missed calls. At the same time I think players are becoming spoiled by the technology. If you watch old matches without it, calls like this happened all the time. I was watching the Roddick El Aynaoui on ESPN Classic the other day and the linesman missed a decent amount of calls. Not alarming, but still missed them.

My God, what a beauty disaster... it's good that Radek df at 6th mp cause probably they could playing 3rd set now...

Andy, in Melbourne you mustn't waste serving 4 match or 5 mp in tie break...

bad calls multiply x 100 every time that guy is there :o

Choking from both a bit there, Andy really shouldn't of tensed up like that from 5-1 up

I agree - they are getting a bit spoiled by the technology... but if you're going to have it, then you should employ it at all ATP events, IMHO. It just seems silly to use it at some events, but not at others.

On the other hand, each player knows in advance which tourneys have it and which don't, so they can make a decision to play certain events knowing the bad call potential... and if they choose to play an event that doesn't have challenge, they should shut up about the calls.

i agree but i think hawkeye gives the players peace of mind that if a very bad call happens in an important situation they wont get screwed over. it has happened many times in the past that bad calls have cost a player a match, heck it nearly cost clijsters the womens championship last night. :o

A little too close for comfort in that 2nd set, but better of him to get rid of all the tension and nervousness now as opposed to the Open. Good week to both.

Local TV switched to news at 4-1 in the second set. They (the Prime network) show the event all week and can't even finish the final. At 4-1 (a double break), I thought Roddick was home anyway. I find it interesting that Roddick has such a bad break point conversion rate (both his breaks in this match were from Stepanek double faults) but such a good record in tiebreakers.

This is great for Roddick. It's going to be a great year if he manages to win Memphis, Washington or San Jose. One mandatory win per year is now achieved.

damn tv cut off footage when roddick was up 4-1 in the 2nd set.

then he got to 5-1, and i thought roddick had the title in his pocket when he was serving 5-2 in the 2nd set, but then WTH happened? it went to a tiebreak!!!, now that just surprised me!!! :O

oh wells, congrats on 28th singles title andy, hope he does well at AO, stepanek played good throughout the week, so good luck to him too for AO.

Great way to start off the new year: win your first Aussie title after a three-month layoff defeating the defending champion, and annoy all your haters who still insist on writing you off. Good stuff. :D

I'm watching the match on replay right now on Tennis Channel.

These linespeople and umpire and seriously HORRIBLE. What BAD calls for both sides.

EDIT: WOW who is this umpire?

Andy: "I understand your position but I can't talk to the linesman, I have to talk to you."
Umpire: "I know, but I'm saying he knows enough of what to do."
Andy: "...What?"
Umpire: "He knows enough to know what to do."

xDD These calls are atrocious.

Nice start to the season from Roddick, but he's never winning another slam and people who can't see that are deluded.

Stepanek is such an entertaining player to watch, it's going to be a sad day for tennis when he retires.
